Personally i like the R32, that why i bought one. The motor isnt as torqy as the r33's but still has enough power standard. Both engines are pretty easy to mod to get a fair few ponys.

The r33 has a few more safety features, ABS and Airbags which bring insurance down abit and has more leg room in the back for you and the missus :D

But i say R32.

if its your first performance car and you really don't have a favourite, then go the r33 for safety sake...

I really liked 32's and hadjust enough to buy one so the choice was made up financially. 33's just seem a bit too chunky for me, but they got mad engines...

just get what suits you

XPL, if you are SERIOUS about buying a car.. a post on this forum won't do.. too many conflicting opinions.

IF you are SERIOUS and want to put your money in the right spot for you do this.

Test drive the following cars in the Nissan performance family of that era:

- a stock r32 gtst

- a reasonably modded r32 gtst

- a stock r33 gtst

- a reasonably modded r33 gtst

- a stock 2 Litre Turbo Silvia

- a reasonably modded 2L Turbo Silvia

I dare say, because i've owned all these cars that the 2l turbo silvia is the fastest out of the three, but also the smallest. A bit more under the radar than skylines usually.

The 2 Litre turbo Silvia is a very light, fast, nimble handling car that is a fantastic boy racing machine. Not many people will respect it as much as the Skylines because of the bad stigma the lower 3 versions of this car has given it. (1.8 litre non turbo, 1.8 litre turbo, 2 litre non-turbo). Great to race with because 90% of the OTHER Silvias on the road suck in comparison, and everyone thinks they can beat you. Proving to them otherwise is a joyful experience. Everyone expects to get toasted when they line up against a skyline.

The r33 is good if you want lots of road respect, people staring at you as you drive past.. but it's quite heavy and handles not as well as the other two cars. This car is probably the top target for thieves and vandals.

The r32 is good if you want a mix of both worlds :D If you had to have a skyline this would be my choice.

Stock Power Figures:

Silvia SR20DET: 164kw

R32 Skyline: 160kw (manual) 152kw (auto)

R33 Skyline: 186kw

Weight:

Silvia: 1120kg

R32: 1480kg

R33: 1540kg

Stock Quarter Miles:

Silvia: 14.3

R32: 14.9

R33: 14.6

The chunky factor is a main con. I am looking to buy a car for the performance rather than street cred. ALthough skylines in general have plenty of street cred. I'd rather DRIVE the car than cruise down Chapel St with my arm out the window!

Thanx Pentae for the specs but most of these I new already, have been researching skylines for a long time. It is now time to buy one.

Am going to check out an r32 GTS4 (man), asking 15.5k, is the 4WD system the same as the GTR with single turbo?

good on you, people who do that should have their arms chopped off:D i guess most of them drive autos anyway....

On the subject of looks you'll find that it's all purely subjective.

it's funny that they say that the R33 is 'safer' with the ABS and airbags(both features which aren't standard)....i mean it's not as if i'm intending to crash it on the first day or anything.......but think of it as more of a bonus...not as a deciding factor:cool:

Man I just bought an R32 about 3weeks ago befor this i had and AUDI A4 quattro Turbo and before that a 2ltr 180sx, the, R32 is definatly me fav, it doesn't have the hard core tail out action the 180 had and it doesn't corner like the Audi but it is damn quick handles well and has heaps of features. My mate has a modded R33 and it is very nice as well, it all comes down to personal preferance!

my sole opinion which might be not be worth much but i would be aiming to get GTS4 R32 with mods , mods cost money and heaps more if your the one pouring it on , unless you going to keep it std <---- thats a phase and we all know that feeling will pass

R32 is my pick...nice quick, tail happy fun with good looks and street kudos to match!

I have not regretted purchasing my R32, and I could have bought a 33 but I liked the look of the 32 better plus the lower weight and less 'chuncky' look... BUT that is only for the GTST variant...if we are talking GTR, my favorite is the 33, but I would mod it with a genuine Kakimoto Wide Body kit and phat deep dish rime with 335 series rubber... mmmmmmm

one thing i considered a major factor when deciding for my car is that he R33 is becoming the new commodore: everyone seems to have one - and that would really annoy me if i had one too.

so i bought an R32 (plus it is easier to park, smaller, lighter, i think it loos better, and goes just as well)

s13 silvia's only had 153 kw. The s14 jspec had about 164 though. I guess that is where you are getting confused?

i'm not saying the times that are posted are wrong, but since the net is a very unreliable source of information, I will post the other times that are also floating around.

s13 = 14.5 (this is the most common figure that I have found)

r33 = 14.37 (also a fairly common figure but not sure about its accuracy)

r32 = 15.1 (this seems a bit high, but I donno)

Pentae, those times, weights and powers do seem a tad off.

The weight of the R33 GTS25t is between 1360kg and 1400kg depending on the options and the age of the car. Also, the power is 184kw (ok, it's 2kw difference :D)

Also, You may say that 14.3 is optimistic, but I've heard of 14.2s with totally stock cars.

If you want any stats on Skylines, go here - imports.motortraders.net - all their info seems to be spot on.

    • Who did you have do the installation? I actually know someone who is VERY familiar with the AVS gear. The main point of contact though would be your installer.   Where are you based in NZ?
    • Look, realistically, those are some fairly chunky connectors and wires so it is a reasonably fair bet that that loom was involved in the redirection of the fuel pump and/or ECU/ignition power for the immobiliser. It's also fair to be that the new immobiliser is essentially the same thing as the old one, and so it probably needs the same stuff done to make it do what it has to do. Given that you are talking about a car that no-one else here is familiar with (I mean your exact car) and an alarm that I've never heard of before and so probably not many others are familiar with, and that some wire monkey has been messing with it out of our sight, it seems reasonable that the wire monkey should be fixing this.
    • Wheel alignment immediately. Not "when I get around to it". And further to what Duncan said - you cannot just put camber arms on and shorten them. You will introduce bump steer far in excess of what the car had with stock arms. You need adjustable tension arms and they need to be shortened also. The simplest approach is to shorten them the same % as the stock ones. This will not be correct or optimal, but it will be better than any other guess. The correct way to set the lengths of both arms is to use a properly built/set up bump steer gauge and trial and error the adjustments until you hit the camber you need and want and have minimum bump steer in the range of motion that the wheel is expected to travel. And what Duncan said about toe is also very true. And you cannot change the camber arm without also affecting toe. So when you have adjustable arms on the back of a Skyline, the car either needs to go to a talented wheel aligner (not your local tyre shop dropout), or you need to be able to do this stuff yourself at home. Guess which approach I have taken? I have built my own gear for camber, toe and bump steer measurement and I do all this on the flattest bit of concrete I have, with some shims under the tyres on one side to level the car.
    • Thought I would get some advice from others on this situation.    Relevant info: R33 GTS25t Link G4x ECU Walbro 255LPH w/ OEM FP Relay (No relay mod) Scenario: I accidentally messed up my old AVS S5 (rev.1) at the start of the year and the cars been immobilised. Also the siren BBU has completely failed; so I decided to upgrade it.  I got a newer AVS S5 (rev.2?) installed on Friday. The guy removed the old one and its immobilisers. Tried to start it; the car cranks but doesnt start.  The new one was installed and all the alarm functions seem to be working as they should; still wouldn't start Went to bed; got up on Friday morning and decided to have a look into the no start problem. Found the car completely dead.  Charged the battery; plugged it back in and found the brake lights were stuck on.  Unplugging the brake pedal switch the lights turn off. Plug it back in and theyre stuck on again. I tested the switch (continuity test and resistance); all looks good (0-1kohm).  On talking to AVS; found its because of the rubber stopper on the brake pedal; sure enough the middle of it is missing so have ordered a new one. One of those wear items; which was confusing what was going on However when I try unplugging the STOP Light fuses (under the dash and under the hood) the brake light still stays on. Should those fuses not cut the brake light circuit?  I then checked the ECU; FP Speed Error.  Testing the pump again; I can hear the relay clicking every time I switch it to ON. I unplugged the pump and put the multimeter across the plug. No continuity; im seeing 0.6V (ECU signal?) and when it switches the relay I think its like 20mA or 200mA). Not seeing 12.4V / 7-9A. As far as I know; the Fuel Pump was wired through one of the immobiliser relays on the old alarm.  He pulled some thick gauged harness out with the old alarm wiring; which looks to me like it was to bridge connections into the immobilisers? Before it got immobilised it was running just fine.  Im at a loss to why the FP is getting no voltage; I thought maybe the FP was faulty (even though I havent even done 50km on the new pump) but no voltage at the harness plug.  Questions: Could it be he didnt reconnect the fuel pump when testing it after the old alarm removal (before installing the new alarm)?  Is this a case of bridging to the brake lights instead of the fuel pump circuit? It's a bit beyond me as I dont do a lot with electrical; so have tried my best to diagnose what I think seems to make sense.  Seeking advice if theres for sure an issue with the alarm install to get him back here; or if I do infact, need an auto electrician to diagnose it. 
    • Then, shorten them by 1cm, drop the car back down and have a visual look (or even better, use a spirit level across the wheel to see if you have less camber than before. You still want something like 1.5 for road use. Alternatively, if you have adjustable rear ride height (I assume you do if you have extreme camber wear), raise the suspension back to standard height until you can get it all aligned properly. Finally, keep in mind that wear on the inside of the tyre can be for incorrect toe, not just camber
