Hey, I am currently of my P plates on the gold coast and am searching for a car. I have saved for 4 years, so i have been doing abit of research in order to avoid purchasing a lemon.

I was wondering what the reliability was like with a 1992 r32 coupe non turbo. Having a nice car is one thing, but being reliable is another. I am looking at an r32 which has done 160,000kms on the body and has an rb25de neo engine conversion done. Other modifications include: remote mounted coil packs, hks hyper d coil overs, light weight einki japanese wheels with staggered width and yokohama advan neova ad07 semi race tyres, 4 pot brake front and 2 pot rears, lsd diff, timing belt.

I am well aware that i will have to go check the car out myself to see the condition it is in and might get a car inspection done by RACQ. However the point of this post was to hear from experienced people who have gone down this path before. How are everybody's r32 non turbos holding up, how many km's do they have, and whether or not i will be having to continuously fork out sums of cash post-purchase of the vehicle for maintainence and replacing broken parts. (I simply will not have the money to do this)

Any comments are most welcome and will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

As a car for someone who is on "P" plates a R32 with a RB25 would be a good option. You will get good handling and brakes with reasonable power in a chassis that you can upgrade with GTR parts.

What you must understand is that R32's are not new cars and you can expect to have small things go wrong with them as things wear out due to age. If you are mechanically minded then is will not be a problem but if you are not then some costs will be coming your way.

It will really boil down to the condition of the specific car that you are looking at.

Good luck.

WWWHHHAAA!?!

I gotta say! Thats an AWESOME FIND MAN!

Id snap that up in a hurry! That is a very good list of modifications! Photos?

Yes, the body has done 160 thou K, but the engine must of done alot less if its out of a 34! Their an awesome engine too! Fair bit of poke, especially in a reasonably light 32!

But, as said above, the boby is close to 20 years old now. You may start to find problems with the gearbox, cluctch, bushes etc (as brakes, engine, diff and suspension has been changed) and the all dreaded cluncks and creaks.

Id be paying very special attention at the driveline when on the test drive. Its worth the money to have an NRMA block have a look over it if your not too mechanically minded

Hey guys i got an inspection done by a mechanic yesterday and he said after 10 minutes of driving, a green liquid was dripping from where the engine meets the exhaust pipe. Another problem he said was that the gearbox was loud when driving. He hasn't really given me alot to go off. But if possible, I would like your opinions on whether these problems are worth investing in. The set price for the car is 9000 and i cant seem to find any other r32 n/a's around.(especially with rb25s in them). I have driven this car quickly and am really keen on it, but don't want to end up paying every last cent to make it run as I am still a student.

Thanks guys

As rare as the GTS25s are, i dont think they are worth 9k...

Its a little average condition. I hope he doesnt think those wheels increase the value...

Ive noticed the drivers door does not seem to be aligned correctly...

Coolant from "WHERE THE ENGINE MEETS THE EXHAUST PIPE", anymore details on that?

The engine does not connect with the 'exhaust pipe', however the 'exhaust manifold' bolts to the 'head'. If thats the case... Hmmm... Im no mechanic but it could be a few things...

cracked head

blown head gasket

A compression test will help diagnosis. Along with other symptoms.

Is it a genuine GTS25 ???

---Considering it has a Neo in it NOW, it could be a GTS.

---Are those brakes original? 5 Stud original?

---I dont see ABS;

------GTS's dont have abs, and the majority of gts-t's do. Im unsure on the GTS25's

I found the advert on Car Sales...

fun car to drive this car has rb25 neo motor from a r34 skyline with 147kw from the factory.it gets 0 to

100 kmh in 6 seconds flat . the engine power has been enhanced buy a kakimoto

exhaust and a custom induction system . remote mounted coil packs for reliability .

, hks hyper d coil overs all round , light weight einki japanese wheels with staggered width and

yokohama advan neova ad07 semi race tyres , 4 pot brake front and 2 pot rears , lsd diff , timing belt

and oils

just changed .this is a series 2 car so it has the up dated interior , this car handles very very well and

has enough power for drift or circuit work .while being p plate legal .

something reminds me of funkymunky's old n/a

i would get a compression test done on the engine

that and a coolant pressure test to check to see if its coolant dripping

The coolant leaking from around the exhaust manifold may be coming from a heater hose (lets hope so!) because if it has blown a head gasket its going to cost a fair bit to replace. It wont e worth $9k thats for sure.

Noisy gearboxes are common, depending on how loud it is, I wouldnt worry about it soo much.

As for reliability, I have a 93 R33 GTS with 15*,000kms on the clock (Its for sale, the link is below) and it has been perfect for the whle year I've owned it. I've replaced the front pads once (inevitable), serviced it a few times, and replaced the front shocks becase I f**ked them up when I installed the lowered springs. Other then that, it has a TINY weep from the pwr steering reservoir which I think has stopped since I tightened the clamps, and a faint weep from the rear extension housing on the gearbox, again nothing to worry about. Considering we're doing $2000+ worth of work on cars NEWER then mine at work, I think I made the right choice!!

Check the engine, and buy it!

    • There are fixes for this. In industry we use compressed air for everything. It is frequently wet, and many things cannot tolerate it. So there are various forms of driers available that you can install. The simplest option for something like this would be a dessicant drier. Much cheaper to replace some silica gel than actuator cylinders.
    • That's a solid update mate, well done at WA FOS. You may already know this, but the actuators on the paddle shift are a service item and are sadly not that reliable. As I understand it they collect water from the compressor (condensation) which then rusts the bores/pistons in the actuators. A mate of mine had no end of trouble with them in one if his circuit cars, apparently it's a 'known issue'. Buy a couple of spares at great expense to ensure you never have any problems with the ones you've got! Any clues about what the new WTAC rules might be? While faster cars are cool the Pro class arms race has got to the point where you wouldn't even bother entering without a $1m budget and even then I don't think you'd win.

You can see another picture of it here: https://www.alltranz.com.au/shop/drivetrain/automatic-transmission/RE5R01A/product/9305/ The 4 speed automatic in the GTT is Nissan corporate stuff. You can search up similar jobs done on a Frontier or Pathfinder with a RE4R01B to get an idea for what the internals are going to look like and the procedure like this:
    • Hi Chris,   long time since your post, just wondering if you have the Pinout for the v35 stereo plugs, I bought the roem nis2 harness but it doesn’t match the v35 connector. any help appreciated, I can work out the grn and power constant. But the rest might be hard. thanks Tyson
