Well my Linux machine does more than my Windows machine ever did and that includes multimedia type stuff and there are alternative programs for everything on linux and if there isn't you can just run it on wine or run windows within a virtual machine (VMware, virtualbox etc etc) + also at least with linux you can choose what type of system you have and what it does and not just install Windows 7 and have it using 700mb on startup :)

lol the whole point of running unix is to have minimal memory overheads on non state of the art hardware to do specialised tasks (ie netbook, or fileserver, or raytracer etc). You'd have to be a complete dropkick that's missed the point if you use Ubuntu on a VM inside an OS like Windows.

I really don't see the point of flavours of Linux that try to do everything.

That's kind of the point isn't it? If you're (the non specific your're, you're not a total wanker) going to be a wanker and crap on about wine and VMs why not just install Windows on a primary machine in the first place? If you really want to run that 'killer app' in linux/unix that doesn't take much resources anyway just do it in a VM or on a spare machine that can't cut it anymore but can run a bit of freeware goodness. Linux is fine just don't shit in my hand and call it an easter egg.

We have a couple of old Acer Veriton 7500G 'server' boxes at work that run Red Hat. Server 2003 would just about kill them loool. I can see the point there.

But for general computing, not so much. I did notice with interest though, that Dell offer Ubuntu as an option with their netbooks!

tbh I do agree, I never said Linux was a Windows killer or anything else like that but it is a good alternative (which i prefer over Windows).. although I did spend half the day yesterday logged into my Windows 7 install playing F1 2010.

since i sold my iphone, i fell less of a dickhead already, although some may disagree...

I thought all the trendy kids had iphones today, why would you wanna sell it?! :(

I thought all the trendy kids had iphones today, why would you wanna sell it?!

all the trendy kids are gettin android phones to try and not be sheep by getting an iphone, so they can one up their trendy iphone owning mates.

make sense?

I can think of a whole lot more reasons to buy a mac.

Just to name a few: Less stress, easier to do my design work on, easier to use, doesn't get viruses, the interface is a hell of a lot nicer, doesn't slow down after after a month - in fact I've had mine for 3 years and it hasn't slowed down at all, it can boot up in windows to play other games - which it does better than my brothers pc which he got 6 months ago (has some decent specs).

As I said just to name a few...

how are they easier to do design work on? they run the same f**king programs!

Also the hardware is cutdown and overpriced compared to a mid range pc, got the artfags at work are always carrying on about this BS, bottom line is unless you have a specific function for it, it's all just smoke and mirrors. enjoy your 80's style ui LOLZ

so I run a triple booting hackintosh to the same specs as a $6000 power mac pro or whatever the fuck the call it. even shelled out for a legit copy of OSX and it only cost me $2500 all up. Does everything Apple's hardware does. I use it to dev iPhone/iPad apps and boot to Windows 7 x64 for design and stuffs. I've got BSD set up as well for testing firmware etc from embedded projects, but I hardly ever boot into that, so for all intents and purposes it's a dual boot system.

The OSX UI is leagues better than windows 7, and the install process is better than Win7 too, however of late a lot of programs seem to leave behind junk on uninstall. It's pretty easy to clean up though, just like it is in Win7, if you know what you're doing. If OSX had all the programs Win7 supported, then I'd switch in a heartbeat. Not a fan of having to run some apps in Parallels or some shit.

tbh I have no idea how you can say that the OSX UI is better than the Windows 7 one.

It's just more intuitive and streamlined. from a UX point of view anyways.

Linux is great for servers where you spend a day setting the thing up then leave it to run for eternity - just make sure those log files are truncating automatically. But searching through forums to find some undocumented parameter in some damn config file somewhere is not my idea of living, I much prefer ticking a box in a preference window - something the linux devs will never have, they love their terminal windows so no good for a desktop for me.

I do love the suite of network tracing and troubleshooting tools available with them so always handy to have a running image around.

Someone said Mac = less stress!! They stress me out a million times more than anything else just trying to resize the windows ffs. You almost get there then the window dissappears. And the single menu bar.. wtf. Admittedly after Windows Vista I was sick of M$ and was considering my options for jumping ship for something else - but I need Windows for my work. Plus I think a lot of the problems were to do with the Nvidia 650/680 motherboard chipsets at the time making early Vista unstable - it got much more resiliant with updates.

But Windows7 window management has saved me. Working with two huge screens, constantly working and referring to 3 to 4 apps at once is now a breeze. I would get less done on Linux or Mac just placing the windows where I need them screwing around sizing windows. Something so simple has a huge affect - and will literally reduce the severity of my impending arthritis. Have a look at the chatter in Mac forums about "windows snap what a useless feature".. get to the end of the thread and everyone is going "wow that is great - are there any utilities to achieve this on the Mac". Linux I am sure already had something similar, and would have implemented the same thing by now if you want it.

Wow... sensitive, I can't imagine how you would react if I called you an artfag haha.

Each to their own, the fact is I've had both machines so I for a fact know how they both run.

You mate have most likely never owned a Mac, therefore your comment is invalid
