Hey all

Did my 100,000km service yesterday and changed water pump, timing belt and tensioners

put it all back together and get a odd noise from the timing belt area

Take the cover back off and have a look and everything looks fine, put CAS on without the cover and it runs perfectly, everything sounds ok

put the cover back on and start it and it makes the noise again, press down on the cover (from the top) and noise goes away

soooo I have figured its gotta be a problem with how the cover is put on. Just after some advice on the best way to align it etc basiclly some advice from someone whos had this problem before. It doesnt appear as though the belt was rubbing cause when i took the cover off there were no marks on it I think it may have just been vibrating in one spot?

Are you tightening the timing belt cover evenly when you're putting it on?

Does it do it with the cover sitting on but only very light tightened up?

I found that with the top two bolts tightened up it doesnt seem to do i but when i tighten the bottom to up it starts doing it

i fiddled with it for ages last night and ended up pushig down on it and doing it up at the same time to get it to work ok but its still not perfect

You should try and tension it evenly at all corners. Is the cover warped or something? Are they the standard screws holding it in place? You shouldn't have anything fouling on the cover. The noise you describe sounds more like bearing stress than contact with the belts but contact is much more likely/ Sure there's no marks inside the cover anywhere?

forgot to mention i lost the centre bolt the first time i pulled it off but it was still doing it then. Ill try and make up a replacement bolt to put there in the mean time till i can go source one from nissan

Thinking perhaps its the top cover pushing the bottom cover in on the belt or something which would explain why it does it more when the bottom bolts are tightened

Well I'm feeling pretty average so i fixed up my alternator/water pump belt and then felt to crap to start on the timing cover so ill probably get out and do it tomorrow morning.

so im still up for advice for anyone whos done it and had the same problem as me. The best way i can describe the problem, and this will probably sound weird but it makes my car sound like a 2 stroke motorbike, like a CR80 or something lol. But yeh i think it may be the two timing covers rattling together or something in which case ill just run some silicon or something around the outside of the top one and give it another go like that

Just found out that most of my noise is actually coming from my A/C compressor

when clutch is engaged (A/C on, car running) the noise isnt present but as soon as i turn A/C off (clutch disengaged, car running) then i get a loud whirring type noise

still gonna take the timing cover off for a looksy

but a bit concerned about the A/C compressor

could it be a tight belt cause i think i did it a bit tight?

was no problems before the service, only thing is i may have spilt collant or water on it but i didnt think that would have to much affect if everything is still working (AC is still cold)

Yep tight belt will cause that or the AC comp has a failing bearing. The tight belt could cause this noise as well though and could also cause the bearing to fail if you leave it too long.

Keep fiddling, you're getting somewhere :(

lol yehh i think its just to tight on the A/C compressor,i think i did them all a bit tight out of frustration and being in a hurry cause id spent 12 hours on the damn thing and just wanted to go home lol

fixing it all up today, even sourced a bolt from a friend who decided to ditch the timing cover when his did the same thing as mine lol

Hopefully will be all good this arvo

Been a while but update:

My A/C noise was from the washer/dust seal (or whatever u want to call it) on the outside of the A/C idler being to tight and it was rubbing metal off the actual idler so thats fixed now and all good

The timing cover is still not being co-operative. I drove around with it for a while with the bottom bolts only just done up enough so they wouldnt fall off and decided to check everything and give it another go yesturday and same thing.... as soon as i tightened the bottom bolts on the upper cover up it would make the noise. Can do the top two up tight and dont have any noises. It appears to be the bottom right bolt in particular that is making the noise. Howeve it does not seem to be damaging the belt or anything cause the belt still looks perfect......

So still after help if anyone else has had this problem

atm ive just got left the bottom bolts a little looser

    • I know mentally you're set on the ATS clutch but honestly I'm a big fan of the Nismo Super Coppermix Twin. It's much cheaper and in some ways I think it's a better design for a street/circuit car.
    • Just checked in first post and you should be able to bring it home November this year, right? I'm amazed you made it through four years of this. As hard as it feels now the rest will go by in a breeze in hindsight, I'm sure.
    • Realized I haven't been back here in a while. Still here, still alive, still waiting for the car.  I went back again the only time last year from Oct-Nov for R's Meeting and drove it around some more, including a few laps on Fuji Speedway(in the wet, sadly). The car still feels good, but have a couple small things to address. I've been getting more parts but have slowed down still, and most of the bigger purchases are now out of the way. I find myself getting impatient more and more when it comes to getting started on this project; it's quite hard for me not being able to really dive in and start making this car my own because it's halfway across the world. At times it doesn't even really feel like I own one of these. Haven't really been motivated or had the desire to document the last trip on here or social media for, well, reasons... but here's some pics...it's also still alive and well as you can see: I've narrowed down to the last large part purchases(anything over $2k) before the engine build to be: 1) Ohlins Road & Tracks 2) ATS Twin Carbon clutch 3) Endless BBK with some custom options and 4) Kansai Service carbon driveshaft I don't think the budget exists for all of these this year, but I'll try for one or two items I think. Though, every time I look at my spreadsheet I sigh, shake my head, and get depressed just that little bit more.  'til later.
    • It's a stunning location!  I've been to NZ twice but haven't made it to the North Island yet.  Definitely on the cards but the South Island is hard to tear yourself away from too... Looking forward to see what you can wring out of it once you can get it to hold together!  Be awesome to get a low 11 or even sneaking into the high 10's pass out of it.  That's a bloody quick car that most people will never experience in their life.  Enjoy!
    • Nominally yes but I’m not really at that stage yet. Outsourcing to Japan is also a relatively good deal at the moment because their currency has devalued much more against the USD.  You would assume this but a lot has changed from the pandemic. Mechanics are in short supply and demand for fixing old cars has gone up from the cost of new cars. 250-300 USD/hr is not an unusual shop labor rate in California and you’re paying that regardless of whether the guy is competent or not. Coworkers have been quoted 3000 USD for a water pump and thermostat at a dealer on an N54. Oil changes went from ~75 USD to 150 on fairly normal cars like Civics. The cost of the oil and filter hasn’t even kept up with inflation.
