well usually you tell the clutch is going cause it will slip lots

for example put your car in 4th when ur doing a low speed so that ur engine is doing pretty low revs and then hold ur foot down, if it accelerates slowly but normally then its probably ok but if ur car revs and you dont really speed up then ur clutch is probbly gone

I dont understand the noise ur describing however

like a ratched as in lots of successive clicks? how quickly do they follow each other?

could be a problem elsewhere or a gearbox or throwout bearing problem

Yep, worn clutch plate will see slipping under load like Boostin said.

If there's an issue with another portion of the clutch system then the symptoms will be different.

A worn pedal box can make a racket, a worn slave cylinder can also make a racket.

Give us a bit more of an idea of what's going on.

well it makes that always just as i take my foot of the clutch, so its louder racket when i take my foot off the clutch normally during reversing

any ideas would be appreciated thanks all

That's an interesting one.

Would need to hear the sound but for the sake of it inspect the pedal box (the assemnbly that the pedal is connected to) and check the slave cylinder for leaks.

What 'kind' of sound is it? A squeek? A rattle? a loud bang? a deeper thud?

If you can't pinpoint it at the pedal box or the slave cylinder then you'll probably have to get it inspected at the very least.

throwout bearing sounds like if it happens when ur foots off the clutch

mine does it and ive only had a new clutch/throwout bearing in there for about 5000km's

im not sure why the throwout bearings wear or whatever they do so quick

do have to say however mines not like what ur describing but yours could be considerably more worn then mine or perhaps incorrectly fitted?

do you know if/when its had a clutch changed and if they replaced the throwout bearing?

more then likely

mine had a stock clutch in it when i got it. you should know if they are stock as they are rather soft and have a wide pressure point..... (or whatever its called im having a mental blank)

but if u run your car and press the clutch and the noise goes away then it could be your throwout bearing

    • Can't see that being a thing.
    • My fob has never worked, I once attempted to follow the procedure to re-key it, (I have other fobs for the car alarm thing in there). I actually have three of them. Do aftermarket alarms take over the pairing mechanism for central locking? Or do they piggyback off it? I suppose it depends on the system, right? I have four sets of keys/keyfobs. One definitely works, one I think works, one definitely doesn't work, and I have the OEM one that has never worked :p. Is this fixable/workable/whatever? I mean I know it's beyond "just clean it" but how *do* they get synced up?
    • It's actually a really weird comparison... the MX5 is on another level and I kinda question this comparison at all. It'd be closer to compare it to a GTI/Golf/Hatch anything that kicks around. NC MX5 with a turbo has the right to go up with and beat the FD RX7 or 180SX or any other JDM hero car. That's the comparison that would really ruffle feathers.
    • @MBS206 you need more shed in your life... What sort of car is your mates race car?  Hopefully he returns the favour when you're ready to get cracking on yours! None of my mates are into cars so I don't have to worry about that as a distraction thankfully.  I have enough other distractions so I don't need that one too!  Between working 6 days a week (5 1/2 really so 55 hours or so per week), both kids have basketball almost every week night (including Friday night in Melbourne - 2 hours away), my daughter plays netball as well, my sons footy has started now and I coach his under 14's side as well as I'm on the Footy club committee this year, I ride motorbikes every spare Sunday I can find, plus trying to be some sort of a husband.  Life is a busy little exercise at the moment!  I wish there were 8 or 9 days in a week sometimes!
    • Ha ha, that is very true!  I'm too scared to leave it in the position though, it tingles my balls seeing it like that!
