So I've got this little box that I knew was there, but haven't bothered with until now. It came with the car.

Its hooked up directly to my headlights, replacing the factory plugs, and it uses one of the factory plugs to know when to switch on/off. I put the factory plugs back into the headlights and everything works fine. So obviously it's not there to replace stuffed factory headlight electricals.

I've since removed it and all 100ft of loom that came with it, but wondering why someone would have put it in in the first place?

It has the same plugs as the stock headlight loom and inside the headlights are normal globes not HIDs

It used to be powering my headlights but I've now removed it and running on the stock loom again

I think my main question is; Why would someone put in aftermarket headlight electrics when the stock ones work fine?

lol...tapewom

did you ever look it up with part numbers to see what it actually is? Im sure the previous owner put it there for a reason.

I just googled it and it appears to be a balast system for xenons. not a bad score if you got it all hooked up again.

As someone has said above it could be an aftermarket set of relays for your headlights. Were they slightly brighter before you removed it? Did the low beams stay on when you turned your highbeams on? Relays will also remove the high flow of current from flowing through the headlight switch which can damage it and people have broken from the current always flowing through the switch. Now that its out of the car you should open it up to check out whats inside it and therefor working out what its purpose is..
