OK so im thinking of upgrading the standard speakers and installing a small amp.

Just wanting to know if there is a stock amp alreay that i can 'upgrade' or if the wiring already runs to the back for an optional amp (i wish!) or if its straight off the head unit??

i dont want to go huge or add subs, but i think some nice splits in the front and rear doors will be good. but i think attempting to run them off the stock head unit will be a bad idea. dont want to damage it

thanks guys!

You won't (or shouldn't) damage the stereo if you install some new speakers, Ian. Instead, if the internal amp is not powerful enough and distorts, that will kill your speakers. Because the speakers aren't getting a "clean" signal from the stereo, they can't produce a clean sound, and the more it happens, the more damage occurs to the speakers... It's like fuelling your car with dirty and low-grade fuel.

Oh, and if the standard stereo doesn't have RCA outputs on it, just buy an amp with high-level inputs on it - it's not a perfect solution, but it's not like you're going to be entering your car in SPL or sound quality competitions, is it?

I did not notice any wiring for an amp when I was installing the PA11-NIS. Having said that, the stock unit can get quite loud without any distortion - so perhaps I missed it?

There are no RCA jacks in the stock unit.

However, if you grab a PA11-NIS, not only can you play/charge your ipod but it also has L/R RCA jacks.

btw, why is it that the day I go to install my ipod the G35ipod site was down? Murphy's Law I suppose :D

yeah its only in a dream if any factory head unit had RCA outputs lol

those line level to RCA converters are pretty much shit, full of noise etc. so yeah an amp with line level inputs will be the go!

anyone know where the factory amp is located for the bose optional system? im only assuming it HAS an amp, maybe the stock head unit has a bigger amp inside it?? or maybe its just better speakers?

i can get the bass to distort on the stock speakers easy, they arent meant to be THAT good. and if i put the splits in, they are rated at 50watts (i think) and i rekon the factory speakers are probably something like 12watts? that will blow up the stock head unit if i run the splits. ill get some nice DC heading their way :)

can anyone confirm if the door speakers are 6" or 6.5"?? ill go to jaycar and buy some stuff and make a project over the long weekend...........

exactly. that means the source needs to be clean as well. the stock clarion (bose) unit HAS line level output. mind you that unit will need a line driver to make it work properly as it has about half the voltage needed to drive an amplifier properly.

rear quarters. pass side. if you do have the bose setup in there then you have to work out the EQ curve applied to it and also be aware that the speakers may not be standard impedances. bose use really low impedance speakers in some applications.

you are running out of power you know. buy a set of VERY efficent splits and you will hear the difference almost immediately.

6.5" on a custom plate. front and rear doors are the same speaker setup. when doing splits make sure you have a thinish tweeter. that way it fits behind the stock panel. you will have to do a custom mount to keep it in place. put the crossover towards the rear of the door as there is a void there and it fits nicely.

I have one I'm working on currently that I'm doing a full setup on and thats the part I'm working on now.

my stock system was awsome with cd's ...

upgraded my head unit caust i wanted AM/FM radio .

radio sounds really clean and crisp but cd's no bass. might just hook up a sub to fix that.

so be very picky about it, no need to rush into hundreds of dollars worth of crap products

thanks chris, as per usual, youre the man! exactly the info i was after!!

im picky about the way my music sounds, i dont need big bass, but i like some depth to the music and the stock setup doesnt completely do it for me. My old old S15 on the other hand was perfect.........

I'll start popping images up of the one I have currently. I'm curious on how this one is going to turn out myself.

I need to get it running first. the doors are done as of today so its time to do a LOT of wiring. then more wood work..
