A True Skyline Owner (at last)

Recommended Posts

Took delivery of my ER34 GTT from Brisbane on Tuesday and drove it back to Cairns being really carefull and not wanting to attract any attention.

Yes I know that is very difficult to do in a Skyline but I succeeded until midway between Mackay and Bowen when S/Const. Dave decided that his speed reporting device and my speedo did not agree.

Having just overtaken a "B" double (speed limited to 100K) and a MaCafferty's coach travelling nose to tail at 100K? my overtaking speed went past the legislated amount by a considerable margin.

Unfortunately (for me) S/Const Dave didn't think that 120 kph was warranted and no amount of grovelling would sway him. A $250.00 contribution to the State Revenue coffers and away I went.

Does this now make me a true Skyline owner?

Cheers

I have just realized that owning an imported pre-owned car is like owning a gift box. You just never know what exactly it is that you are going to get. Found a set of wires under the underlay in the boot ...... hmmmm wonder where they lead to? Ahhhh I see, they go to these wires under the passenger seat, now if only I can work out where they go to?

yer, i love my last encounter with the police

"you have no front numberplate"

"Yes i do sir, its a slimline mounted on the drivers side down low, is this ok?"

"yes."

"oh k great, cause i wasnt sure if it was legal or not"

"you fishtailed outta pacific fair"

"no sir, i did not feel my car break traction"

"it looked to me like you were fishtailing"

"i changed lanes rapidly to avoid a truck that seemed to be doing over the speed limit"

"ok, licence please"

and i got a activity report card filled out, i think they thought i was a criminal

What is it with our constabularly and Skylines? Is it a jealousy factor, tall poppy syndrome, or are we the poor humble Skyline owner the victim of some subsversive plot against all that is right in the world. ......... Sorry about that guys ....... got a little of track there but it really does seem that our choice of transportation does seem to attract unwanted attention. Í wonder if they pick on Lambo drivers as much?

More than likely that the Lambo driver would take it to court with a Q.C. and get off if there is even one t uncrossed or one i not dotted.

The cop would know that he would be out of his league so wouldn't even bother.

One law for the obscenely rich, and another for skyline owners and another for everyone else.

Welcome to the democratic republic of Australia folks :)

Thanks 46n2

It seems that it is the start of an interesting relationship. Now if only I can cure the Black Beast of the dreaded Skyline Stall problem (very embarrassing at lights etc). I have read the reports on this forum and aslo on the other one. Nothing conclusive as yet.

Thanks CYA34,

I am sure that Nissan designed these things just to scare the bejesus out of Commodore and Falcon owners. It's amazing isn't it that every bloody Falcadore owner wants to have a go at you. I'm tempted but it gives me more satisfaction to let them scream off into the disatance.

Owning a spaceship ........ yes a very very fast one! Now if I can just find out why the front speakers don't work .......... Hmmmmm This is where they should be ............. aaaahhh no speakers = no sound. Another one of those little joys.

Cheers

yeah well expect to get lots and lots of fines. maybe loose ya licence a couple of times.

i bet, 1month after i get my licence back i will most probable loose it or get a fine and almost loose it.

i got some fines to pay still. cant really be bothered, ive paid way more then my share.

i get hassled for things that are legal, i also admit some things are illegal. but shit happends.

enjoy your skylines

Congrats MUZ!

Am i just insanely luckly? i do some pretty stupid shit in my car not all the time but often enough. I have been pulled over once in 8 months and that was for something really really stupid and i was basically a sitting duck. But i never get harassed??

Thanks Guys for all the words of encouragement.

There I was motoring sedately along just south of Miriamvale observing the speed limit, darkness coming on, thinking to myself now would be a good time to see what all the fuss is about with these Zenon headlamps ........ flick the switch ......... hmmmmm not very impressed ..... reckon my Honda Accord lights are just as good ....... mental note ...... adjust headlamps when I make the next pitstop.

Drive into the ever friendly fuel merchant in Rocky sometime later ... refuel the near empty tank .... go to pay and ever kind attendant says did I know that only the left hand headlamps are working. Probably explains why they did'nt seem so bright. Anyways decide to leave the problem until light of day.

Check into a motel and get a great nights sleep ..... up early and gone (yes I paid the bill the night before) ...... next stop Mackay .... Hmmmmm ...... Marlborough stretch ....... achieve Warp 5 and still accelerating but run out of seeable space. Arrive Mackay, find a friendly auto sparky (he just happened to another Nissan nut - Z32 TT) and he allocates me his best man and the bright young lad looks at me and says "Whats the problem?" I explain the problem - no lights this side and he says "Yes you need to have bulbs to make them work". Oh duh. What price a roadworthy certificate?

Cheers

    • Have you put an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on and verified your oil pressure?   Noise being on the block, on exhaust side, how high up the block does it seem to be? It could be the VCT system getting cranky, especially if it's mainly at idle, and when warm, as that'll be your lowest point for oil pressure. Could be showing that oil passages / VCT solenoid are blocking.
    • Well, hydraulic lifters will get noisy if they are dirty/fouled in some way, and exactly how that manifests will depend on exactly what schmutz is where. There is a procedure on here somewhere for dismantling and soaking/cleaning them. Replacing them with new is about 50% of the work and about 5% of the money!
    • Thanks for the reply @GTSBoy this is is a hydraulic lifter engine. Yea right i did not realise the lifters were supposed to be compressible while installed. I could push them down but i had to lean almost my while body weight on them.  I have never heard of a lifter/ lifters ticking only at hot idle and getting worse the hotter it gets. I have owned a few jdm cars with noisy lifters. This noise is slightly more subtle, it is more of a sharp gentle metalic tic than the solid and more loud tapping I've heard on lifters. I have used a metal rod, alloy tube, hose and stethoscope and could not find the source of the tick. But it appears to be loudest on the actual engine block behind the exhaust cam gear and next to the oil filter. I had mate (40 year old mechanic) go over it with me and he couldn't find it either..  Could it be a cam seal issue of some sort?  Cheers
    • This seems problematic and unlikely at the same time. Vanilla RB2Xs have hydraulic lifters. They do have "zero" clearance, but only when running with oil pressure inside them. When not running, you should be able to compress them and obtain heaps of clearance. RB26s and Neos have solid lifters. They should have ~0.3mm and ~0.5mm on the inlet and exhaust respectively. If they have zero clearance then bad things are happening. With nothing else being wrong, it would mean that the valves would be held slightly (ever so slightly) open when they are supposed to be closed and it should have all sorts of problems when running, caused by leakage in/out through the valves. Or, zero clearance can indicate severe valve seat recession. None of it is good. Have you used a piece of hose as a stethoscope to try to localise the noise?
