Hey guys,

ive done my major service including thermostat and rad hoses.

i also put in a Spec M 52mm alloy radiator in prep for track this year but here is the problem.

the car is running hotter. ive bleed the air out 10+ times so its not that and the car doesnt overheat its just hotter

i have an aftermarket temp gauge which is connected to a greddy alloy top rad pipe and it reads 80 once warm but at the lights

it gets upto 90ish which is about 5 degrees hotter than before.

ive noticed also that it doesnt cool down as much when im do 100km like it did before.

the stock gauge reads as it always does (right in the middle) and when i pluged in consult it shows the temp to be about 10 hotter than the aftermarket gauge. but that means at the lights at idle its really 100 degrees

so its gone from running temps of 76ish to 80 to a new radiator that sez its 30% more efficent and upto 100 degrees

i know the radiator is good so i was thinking maybe its because the rad is alloy not plastic so the gauge sensors are getting hotter by defualt?

secondly i have a bad mis once warm and ive checked everything else, coils, plugs, afm ect.

so i thought it could just be the standard temp sensor so i call nissan and they said i have 2.

1 for the gauge and one for the ECU. im guessing the gauge sensor is connected to the bottom of the rad

but where is the other and which should i replace if any???.

from nissan

The sensor for the guage is $59

The sensor for the ECU is $85.

any ideas guys?

extra info

im using the stock shroud. no leaks no problems with the colour of the fluid

The sensors are located on the top pipe, near the head. They are not mounted in the radiator itself.

You're running tha factory fan? And the stone tray underneath?

hey

yeah using the stock fan with no stone tray.

there (IS) a sensor at the bottom left side of the radiator next to the bottom radiator pipe

the radiator is plug and play so all the stock stuff is retained

regardless can a temp sensor cause a mis? how can i test? i have consult if that helps?

cheers guys

SAU - keeping my car on and off the road since 2007!!!

Yes, its possible that it "could" cause a miss. It can cause the ECU to run rich as it thinks the motor still hasn't reached opperating temp and will stay in warm up mode. You will usually also get poor fuel economy with this too. Should be able to use consult to find an error code if theres a sensor out.

Ok, try putting the stone tray back on. It will help reduce the ability for air to not go through the radiator. You need to make sure that as much air as possible goes through the radiator - it's not going to cool anything if it simply slips out underneath the car.

Also, consider this: your new radiator is nearly twice as thick as the factory unit. It might be possible that the air traveling through the radiator gets too hot in the front half of the fins, and therefore can't draw as much heat in the rear half, leaving the coolant only partially cooled.

    • See my post here If you put the Haltech in, you won't have to worry about any of that. And, in case you're worrying about my lack of credentials in doing your exact swap, I put a Neo in an R32. There has never been a stock boost solenoid near my car and the Neo's ECU has never cared. Nor should it, because it is electronically impossible for it to care.
    • That's 100% wrong. Did you wire in the boost sensor? If you did not, then that is 101% your answer. Neo ECUs do suck a bit.
    • Hello, I'm trying to make this thread basically the thread with all the answers to common questions regarding specifically the RB20 DE NEO + T engine, that comes in the R34. Answers will and only should be provided by those who have done this conversion or actually have some relevant real life experience please. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments if you have any so other members can answer. I feel like this thread is really needed, especially with more Americans buying (unknowingly going to regret it too) rb20 neo r34s. My first question being - What do you guys use for tuning? I have purchased a haltech elite 2500 Plug and play kit for the rb25det NEO because the ecu plug is the same, but I am unsure if any of the pins would need to be repined to match. Second question that I see asked very often - After this conversion, did you install the boost solenoid/ actuator? I see many people doing a + T setup on their rb20 NEOs while running stock RB25DET NEO ECUs with no tune. I am wondering how they are going about doing that and consistently abusing the car because many of these people have had these untuned setups running for a very long time. That was my original plan, but my engine cuts out at 5 psi of boost using the stock ecu with no tune and no boost solenoid/actuator.
    • interesting. ive read and heard otherwise over the past year. ive been doing this +t conversion on a rb20 neo using all oem rb25det neo parts including the ECU, and im having engine cut out issues when I hit around 5 psi of boost. Everywhere/everyone ive asked has told me its because I never wired in a boost solenoid/actuator to the ecu, so the ecu isn't getting the right signal once it hits 5 psi of boost, causing the engine to get shut off.
