Hey Guys,

I drove my car yesterday for the first time in a week and after I got home it was making a tappety noise coming from the motor. Temps and everything were normal so I'm not sure. I was thinking of dropping the oil since I don't know whats in it at the moment. I think the oil might be too thick because when I start the car up it idles at like 500rpm for 30 secs n then picks up to 1000rpm. Anything common with 32 GTRs that might cause this?

Or am I just being paranoid lol.

Thanks in advance

Coxy

Yer well the oil will be getting dropped tomorrow. Any other reasons my car might be making this noise?

tapping?

when does it do it?

well most likely in a car engine......it could be the Hydrualic lifters in in the head block near the cams.

they can be faulty......

have a listen at the top of the head where the spark plugs go..... if it comes out of there......then id say thats it....

let us know how u go

Rb26's do not have hydraulic lifters

I think it is the Hydraulic lifters in the head its always had the tapping sound but its louder now. I dunno maybe I'm just being paranoid lol

*Edit* Hydraulic lifters are out then lol.

The noise is coming from the head though. In the rocker cover.

Beelzebub89, mine does the same. The noise comes and goes even at idle. Once its off idle the noise is gone.

I popped the intake cam cover off and the valve clearance was excessive. That was quite some time ago. I am planning on ajusting the valve clearance when I can do with out my car for 4-5 days as I'll do it myself, and its a bit time consuming, plus gotta order shims.

I've done around 40 000km and the noise is begining to become embarassing now...Its not a nice advert for the GTR lol.

At first I was stressed about the noise but once I realized it was only tappets I was relieved...I still need to do them thou

Ah ok. I've got 12 month warranty from the dealer so I'll get it sorted when it goes in for the first service. Thanks for the help :) All the horror stories of blown engines n f**ked turbos has gotten me really paranoid lol. I'll still drop the oil though. I think the dealer had some shite oil in there :P

doesn't increase with revs but the noise disappears when revved. The noise is only there when on idle.

ok...

if they dont have Hydraulic lifters.,...then thats a bonus.....

cause if the hydrualic lifters are f**ked.......youll have to replace them....

but if they dont then they should have Tappets.......you can adjust them according to the workshop manual for the tappet clearance.

well as you said....if its coming from the head.....then thats most likely what it is.......

just take it back to the dealer then

but if i were you, id get the RB26 workshop suppliment......and try it out for myself so i know and have the experience in the future....

its important to get Cylinder NO #1 "rocking" as in when you get a torque wrench.......turn the engine crakshaft bolt......

take the head rocker cover off.........

keep turning the bolt till the 1st cylinders closest to the Engine Fan moves.....then move it anti clockwise a little and it should lift when you turn clock wise and anti clock wise....

then get a feeler guage to see the clearance.

but anyways.........see how you go anyways

Ok guys I f**ked up when I rev the engine the noise does pick up with the revs, I missed it the first time. So am I safe to assume its just noisy injectors?

What needs to be done to make the noise go away? Injector Cleaner or something?

Anyway at least it isn't anything really major.

Thanks for the help.

i know alot of people say its the injectors.....which it could be...but bare in mind...your telling us that it has been more apparent in loudness since you purchased it.

well Alot of Nissans if you notice are quite clicky due to the injectors......especially from the 88 - 90s era.

but bare in mind, that the clicking can increase in both the Injectors and the Lifters/Tapets...

because the tapets are set according to the Camshafts when they turn, hence....opening the valves inlet and outlet ports in the head.

the best thing to do......can you post a video of it?

here is a link for a bit more of understanding for the Tappets

to be honest if it is the Fuel injectors....or even if not....a proper full off tank injector clean, (disconnecting the fuel tank and running the motor direct to carby cleaner, this could be done at any dealsership) you will notice a more louder clicking due to it being more free flowing.

Rev the engine... when it comes off the revs, the injectors will be silent as they are closed... then you can work out if it's the extra loud injectors or something else.

If it's a bearing, you'll hear it on start up (like running a stick along a fence or having marbles in a can) but you wont really notice it on idle... only up past 3000rpm.

Otherwise, rod knock, lifters, etc...

    • I have done a lot of research before posting here and on gtruk forum. couldn't find anything. I have my gauges all part except the needle itself. the needle has a extremely small hole in the center, but the shaft going to the needle is extremely small and appears to have nothing to index it either. doesn't seem strong enough to simple pry or pull without damaging something. Already tried the old spoon trick on a extra triple meter I have from a gtt, but no luck. the center cap comes off easily but the hole in the meter face plate aren't big enough to get over the needle itself. figured this would be my best place to find someone who might have actually removed theirs. wonder if there is some type of small pin press tool to push the pin in while pulling the needle base off.

    • Assuming that they will come off without damage at all.... i would have thought just pull straight up off the spindle with a something or other than can reach underneath. Have you searched for youtube vids of people doing similar on R34s or any other Nissan from the same vintage? They should be the same technique, in all likelihhood.
    • Keeping in mind that sandblasting is really aggressive on softer metals like cast alloy, and you can do damage that you might regret. For trash wheels, not a problem. For wheels with value/scarcity issues, etc.... perhaps a less aggressive media is a better choice?
