so last night went for a drive ,

driving along , gave it a squirt and then it started rattling , so i pulled over to inspect and there is a clunking noise in the engine bay ,

i assumed it was the clutch fan but wasnt , discovered it was coming from the back of the intake plenum ,

checked the oil and it was incredibly low , limped into a servo and got 2L of oil for it ,

put it all in , let it run through , turned it off , let it sit for 5 mins , started it up again for 5 mins and still made the clunking noise .

took it for a drive and it had no low end power and sounded like a WRX , soon as it came on boost it seemed fine :S

returned to the petrol station and got my mate who was cruising in his skyline with me ,

took him up the road and we both decided best to go home and park it .

limped down the freeway on the shoulder to home , got home and it cut out as i was going in the driveway , let it sit for a good 90mins and then came back to it ,

cold started it , didnt make the noise as loud , opened up the radiator cap and let the car warm up to see if it blew bubbles , nothing.

only thing we could see was some particles of gunk in the top of the radiator .

went and looked at the exhaust and there was bubbled up carbon and it was all over the ground .

this leads me to beleive i could of possibley done a head gasket ?

ask me any questions as i have no clue what it could possibley be and have no way of getting the car anywhere for a few days

cheers.

Hmmm try n drain the oil from the sump or remove the sump and look for something floating around cos it reminds me of the time i blew a rocker arm in my s15, it rattled for a while and then went away cos the broken rocker and shims had fallen down into the sump.

The engine was crappy to drive but when it hit boost, it felt better but the power was lacking.

Good luck with everything mate, i hope its a small fix, please keep us updated!

cheers for the advice mate !

will drain the sump a bit later today when the sun goes down a bit .

as for removing the sump i dont really trust my self with doing that as i only have a shitty jack and 2 jack stands :s

Spun bearing would sound like putting marbles in a can and rattling them... or even running a stick along a corrugated fence... and you'll hear it when you first turn on the car and then it might go away (depends on how bad it is) but when you rev it over 3k you'll hear the sound again.

If it's the head, check the oil filler cap for chocolate-milk looking stuff. If you find that, the heads blown.

When's the last time you changed/filled up the oil? Sounds like it'd be using quite a bit of oil...

But it sounds like a spun bearing. Low oil = massive bearing issues.

How's oil pressure?

But it sounds like you'll be needed a rebuild... which will be between 5k and 10k but can go up and up... depends on how well you want it rebuilt, and what the quality of the engine is (block is okay? etc).

engine seems to idle fine but when you accelerate a bit it sounds like something has come lose up front of the engine ,

still has carbon water in the muffler and on the ground around the back of the car

hopefully taking it back to where it got dyno'd , tomorrow but they will no doubt try and stiff me

sigh

Yea, my 26 went the way of the grim reaper. It ended up chewing a piston ring and having a blown head gasket. If you drain the coolant and its a milky brown, head gasket time. But that knocking is cause for concern indeed

Fingers crossed... but then again, nothing these days comes free :P

yeah :P

only time will tell , when i went there earlier they werent stuck up about it at all , they understood and didnt try to deny stuff

so that has reassured me a bit

*waits for phone to ring*

  • 5 months later...

probably should post an update in here ,

almost 7 months on and it ended up being spun bearings on cylinder 5 & 6 and the pistons had mashed the valves on both cylinders.

i was going to rebuild but i gave up and bought a 25det

me and a couple of mates pulled the 26 out and i stripped it over a week or so and started parting it out.

right now the car is still off the road as im still tracking down parts for a 25det i bought ,

all im in need of is some oil piping, vacuum lines and a couple of coolant lines.

if anyone's the slightest bit interested ill dig up the pics of everything.

cheers for all your help in trying to work out what was wrong with my engine via a keyboard

shows that SAU is a good community and people aren't afraid to help out !

cheers guys

Put up pics, it cant hurt

Just to clarify, you're now putting an RB25DET into a GTR?

haha nah mate , its a r33 gts25t that had a 26dett in it , thats the ONLY reason im putting a 25 into it :D

ill post up some pics later today :D

    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
    • I have to put something here in order to post the photos. From what I could gather there's more enthusiasm for modified cars now than there has been for years. There were probably more younger people there than older (me included lol) which was a good sign.  It did seem like the record least amount of representation of the 90's era hero cars on display though. Like maybe one or two examples of S-chassis Nissans, and maybe 3 or 4 R-chassis. By comparison there were a lot of Civics from that era but in all there were about 10 - 12 EG/EK Civic Type R.  Euro exotics are always there in large numbers, led by Liberty Walk...... say what you will about kids using markers to scribble on a Ferrari F40, it did seem like a stunt to infuriate Ferrari enthusiasts, or Ferrari itself. I wonder if there's something more to it. Either way LBWK have done some heinous things to a Lamborghini Miura this time. They should stop now.
    • Engines and drivelines are not war stoppers for me mate, busted arse bodies and un-obtainium parts and panels are though Both cheap Brumbies I looked at had trashed tubs and a fair bit of rust
    • Stock O2 sensors are narrowband. They're useless once you're away from stoich. IE, useless for what you're trying to do. 10:1 will read the same as 14:1 from the stock O2 sensors. That is, they'll read rich. The same level of rich.
