I am about to pull the engine out of my GTR soon to get it rebuilt. For you guys that have been there and done it already, I would like to know what weight rating should I get for each? The engine stand needs to be able to hold the engine with all the running gear on it (turbos, plenum etc). I Guess the crane would need to be able to lift the engine and gearbox. Are there any brands that you recommend, places to buy them from, things to look out for? I am in Sydney.

I did this over the weekend, I used a 2 tonne crane (on the 600kg setting) and a 600kg engine stand.

I bought my gear from Gasweld in Blacktown, from memory it was $340 for the crane and $130 for the stand.

Cheers,

Thanks for that

yeah basically anything will do even though the stands look pretty scarey at times. we use a 2t hoist (on its 500kg setting) and a 500kg stand. it hangs pretty nose heavy but has always been fine

ditto, had mine on a 500kg stand a few times and no issues.

mate of mine has his built jun stroker sitting on a stand, with big sump, front diff, etc... looks very nose heavy, so he has propped a bit of wood under the front just in case..

yeah but no matter how bad they look they have never actually been unstable or fallen, and we have done 6 motors in the last 12 months in the garage.

the only time i've ever dropped a motor off a stand is when I forgot to put the pins in the stand where it attached to the hoist properly = broken balancer and bent crank. ouch.

Do you just use chain to attach the hoist to the engine or use an engine tilter? Where are the lift points on the RB26 engine and how do you attach it?

Thanks

i've done it with just a chain, but a tilter will make it a bit easier.

lift points are front left of the head, and rear right (standing at the front of the car and looking at the engine)

are you removing engine and box, or just engine?

yeah we did it with a chain for the first few years but have a tilter now. it makes things much easier especially with the deep trust sump on the bottom - you need to tilt it back to clear the sway bar then level it back out to get the input shaft in straight.

Just the engine at the moment.
