I'm going to fit an aftermarket H/U to my R32 which has the dual diversity antenna system with antennae in the front and rear windscreens. It has a two prong plug at the back of the factory H/U.

I've done a search but I'm still unsure what is the best way to change it over. It seems to me that the factory system is just adequate but not that good anyway. I guess that could be because the factory antennae are optimised to the slightly lower japanese frequency band or maybe antennae in the glass are more directional than a vertical antenna so reception varies depending on which way the car is headed.

Should I fit another antenna? If so, what type and where? or should I use the existing antennae and just buy an adapter for the plug? Is this good enough? I have my doubts.

What's your radio reception like?

I have the change over plugs. it will take the twin pin diveesity antenna and convert it to a std item that plugs into the radio.

pm me your address and I'll send it to you.

I sell them. $10 . booster it combines the external antenna and the on glass one. its a better way to do things than cutting off the plug and creating a grouind loop ( great for amplifiers -NOT!)

just goto jbhifi or audio barn and ask for a aeriel adapter for a nissan skyline import and theyll give you a $15 plug that will hook up to your twin prong aeriel and plug into your stock australian head unit and you can pick up normal 89.9 to 107fm

without that you can only get 77 to 88fm

You can go to supercheap auto too and order it in.

The aerpro doubble diversity adapter works really well.

The antenna you still get to control with the switch near your steering wheel.

The quality is beut - There really is no problem with the height of the antenna - it is merely optimised for stronger signals like in built up areas in Japan. When in area with a normal signal just put the antenna up and hey presto good reception.

You know the antenna is mounted on a slant - its good for high speed, mine still perfectly straight.

You know if you make the antenna longer it doesn't reduce its fm capability only makes it better. The frequency wavelength should be your guide. To give you an idea 104.9MHz is 1.2 metres size wave so if you want perfect reception make your antenna 1.2 metres long.

Understand this - The smaller the number MHz the bigger the size of the radio wave.

In theory this means you should use even longer antennas. However you will find the shorter antenna is able to take the sum of two halves or in the case of the skyline one the sum of three thirds - bits of the parts of the wave are summed to gether when the signal is strong enough and transmit the whole signal through it.

In short the antenna is perfectly fine the way it is.

Most other cars usually have to put the antenna up for weaker fm signals anyway. The difference is that the antenna is usually 0.5m long on the shorter setting realising the radio signals are weaker in general here they have made it about a half the shortest amplitude instead of a third.

Hope that helps.

My R32 only has the antennae in the front and rear windscreen. There is no conventional aerial.

I bought an aerpro adapter today and it has a female socket for the stock dual diverity plug and then it splits into two wires. One has the standard male aerial plug as you would expect but the other has a standard female aerial socket and I don't know what it's for. Just to see how it works I checked it with a multimeter to see what connects to what. I found out only one of the dual diversity prongs connects to the male aerial plug that plugs into the HU. That means that only one of my antennae will be used. The other prong connects to the unused female socket so it seems to do nothing.

I hope that makes sense.

Can anyone tell me what the second wire with the female aerial socket is there for?

Thankyou.

Thanks Chris, yes I bought an Aerpro AP348A adapter. I just have a few Qs.

The male aerial plug is only hooked up to one diversity pin while the other pin is hooked up to a female aerial socket Why does the AP348A also have a female socket?

Are you saying there is a factory antenna amp in all R32s?

If so, does one of the wires at the back of the h/u need to be hooked up to power it?

Could the wire be the black/red one that is taped with the diversity antenna coaxes.

Either way it seems to me that with the AP adapter that you only get to use half of the diversity system ie. either the front or rear windscreen antenna but not both so surely the reception must be inferior to factory. As I live in an area where all the good radio stations have a weaker signal I need very good reception.

depends o the adapter . some of them use both antennas and in your case only one is used. the wire that is taped to the antenna cable is the amp.

connect it up to the remote on wire (blu/wht) or pwr ant ( blu) if you have one.

the whole concept of nissan diversity is that you have two antennas that pick up the signal and via a bit of creative circuitry in the radio they are combined for better reception. some of the upper end sony units had this as an option and they fitted these cars. ( can't remember which ones though.)

let me know if the above helps..

Pity I didn't hook that wire up before I fitted my custom anti-thieving b*stard security brace. It takes an hour to remove the h/u.

Where is the amp?

Chris, Do you know if the amp boosts the front or back antenna or does it boost both?

Does the adapter connect the front or rear antenna?

Sorry for all the Qs. I guess I'm never happy until I understand how something works.

adapter uses the rear antenna - the front one isn't used.

amp location - NFI. just know theres one in it and it does the rear one.

I'll have to show you my version of 'antitheft'stereo... ( if you can find it!)

    • I much prefer that to an actual oil pressure issue, never would of thought it would of been a volt drop issue but SAU brains win again. Guess ill be turning down the oil pressure limit for the track and hunting some grounds. Ill hopefully update this thread with some high oil pressure and solid ecu voltage logs.
    • You've just discovered a really good reason to tell yourself, yes, I do need to buy an aftermarket ECU. Put the MAF in the bin. Slap in the new ECU and have a think about what turbo sounds you prefer.  Do you want a 90's style BOV wooosh? Do you want a hektik tsututututu?  Mate, can't go wrong. Just gotta get that ECU and the world is your oyster.
    • Hi. Iam just curisou about this topic. I saw this video. It is about Greddy Type FV2. I know that BoVs are about that sound but how and when to use it? I read some topic here and from what i have understand on stock RB with MAF there will be some "problems" if you use this BoV? It vents the air in to the atmosphere and the MAF on stock car needs this air back in to the intake and not out? Or is it wrong? If so...i saw you can put some adaptor to circule air back...but does that not "loose" that sound? I saw another BoV from Turbosmart and it has two "exhaust" like ports? One is for the stock tubing for letting air back and one is for "sound" and let the air in the atmosphere? Can someone please explain? This is the Greddy one:  And this is the Turbosmart.     THANK YOU!! EDIT: So i read about this topic some more and i if i understand that correctly: That Greddy can function either like BoV or 100% Bypass valve? And that Turbosmart is what they called hybrid so you can adjust what and how many air can be vented out or back in? Is this right? THX!
    • That dirty voltage drop is the culprit I suspect
    • i cant get them all in 1 screenshot unfortunately as i just dont know how to move things around tbh, but they are all from the same log and the line crosses at the same point for all of them
