Hey guys,

Im after buying a siberian husky and wanted to know has anyone got one on this forum? Just need a few question answered....... Are they hard to look after if you work full time? Does anyone know of any breeders? any info will be greatly appreciated.

I have previously had huskies. All i can say is that they take a LOT of effort to maintain, exercise and train.

They are constantly shedding fur, which means you will ALWAYS have dog hair in EVERYTHING. You can vac twice a week and it still wont be enough.

They are VERY energetic (and acrobatic!) dogs, so if you plan to be out of the house a lot (ie working full time) you need to walk them TWICE a day or else they will get bored and try to escape...they are mini Houdini's! Make sure your yard is 110% secure and HIGH fences all round.

That is totally separate to ruining your garden, fence, grass, shed, pretty much everything in your back yard....infact i hope you like desert, because thats what it will turn into.

They are pack animals, so from time to time they will try to be the alpha dog. If you get two huskies, expect them to fight occasionally....and not some crappy little snarl, our last fight resulted in a few stitches at the emergency animal hospital.

So in summary:

Did I love having a Husky around: YES

Would i ever own another one: NO

Im a lazy person and they are way too energetic for me. Give me a lazy dog any time

my mate has one or similar, fantastic looking dog, great eyes. Its pretty much his child, put it that way. All his social plans has to accomodate his dog, how long he will be a way for..ect. That said he doesn't go out much and if he can he will bring his dog along.

Yeah they will jump the fence and they do leave alot of fur but I wouldn't buy one unless there's someone to take it for walks, you could leave it indoors but your house may get ruined, working full time and taking care of it may make you tired, also if you get one have it desexed as their urine smells real bad and you don't want that on your walls buy recommend a smaller dog

If anyone wants large lazy dogs i recommend greyhounds. Take 'em out once a day or maybe every second day for walks and a run/

Go out, sprint, coma. Although you may need to buy another couch.

Actually I have 2.. Dante and Amber. They keep each other company and thanks to a friends mutt.. they now tongue each other regularly.. very cute together tho. They never really fight, tho there is the odd carry on and Amber is a bit protective of her food. Huskies and Malamutes frequently need to be chained up separately to eat their food.

In fact I know some people that have a whole sled team of Malamutes and they are all separate at all times.

Huskies usually get along a bit better than that though and are frequently found in pairs.

If you are going to be working alot and leaving it alone then you really must get a second dog. If you dont then you will get all the problems of chewing everything and constantly trying to escape. Doesn't necessarily have to be a Husky but they like to chase small animals like cats.. so a Chihuahua might not be the best idea.

They love to dig, especially if there's a tasty bit of moss growing in the dirt, they then fight over who gets to dig.. so there's a few holes in the backyard.

You will need to have a secure yard with an 8ft fence, as they have very springy elephant trunk legs.. and possibly need to put in some mesh under your fence to stop them from digging under and getting out.

They have no roadsense whatsoever, and are freq stolen so once they are out it's likely you won't see them again.

They are born to pull, so it's been hard training them to walk, but then you can do fun things like take them to the snow and go in sledding and weight pulling races.

Purebred huskies dont normally shed all year (like a labrador for eg), they shed in big clumps a couple of times a year when they lose their undercoat, usually before and after summer.

They totally get into everything as puppies, but now they are getting older they are much better. When they were little you couldn't leave anything out.. pot plants, tools, bbq cover, garden lights, hose..

At this point I can never let them off the leash outside, they will probably run off to find ducks or a cat to eat.

Amber was very proud to catch her first bird a couple of months ago.. a huge freakin crow! eww Previous to that I had pet pigeons.. about 25 of them :\ that would visit daily to eat the dog biccies...

Anyway cbf typing anymore.. I love them to death but now that i have them, it would be easier to get a miniature husky or an alaskan klee kai or a spitz (except the spitz are yappers)

If you get a husky make sure the parents have been checked for hip dysplasia (you want to see it in writing) and get one from a registered breeder, they have a much better temperament than a cross or mutt.

Ive been looking for miniature huskies but like you said i cant find any thats why im after a siberian husky. if anyone finds any breeders for miniature huskies could you please let me know.
