hi everyone.....

umm i know there are a lot of these posts from people needing advice between cars and well im in the same position as them so i hope that i can get some good advice or comments from anyone. thanks in advance.

ok here is my situation. I have around $20-25k to spend on a car next month, and i have been planning to buy an R33 GTST skyline sometime nxt month, preferablly a series 2 which is 96 or 97. But recently after seeing a post in the "for sale" part of this forum, i saw an S15 for sale around $30k and this got me thinking as an s15 is onli around $10k more den the R33 n its a lot newer n insurance shouldnt be as expensive?(i fink) since its not an import. Since i have a 5month break from uni, im planning to get a fulltime job in this time and well i can earn that extra $10k within the 5months.

So at the moment i have a big big dilemna as if i should just get an R33 skyline nxt month or wait another 5motnhs for an s15 which is like 2001 model. So basically my question is...Which car is better in performance, insurance, mods etc., repairs n shyt and basically which car has more value for money. I've done quite a lot of research on a skyline since im a skyline fanatic but i don't really know much about the s15. So would be good if i could get some advice/comments from some anyone.Thanx

OR, you could egt the r33, and spend the 5 months saving up for $10K worth of mods in one go ----> definately equal a quick R33..

only about 4-5 years difference in make, and if you going to mod anyway like you were asking then your already on your way!!!

the S15 is basically the same as any SR20 powered car, which is then same as most import engines, mods wise!

but really depands on what you want the car for...

i believe that the R33 weighs more, but has more torque with the 2.5l, but the S15 weighs less with less torque from the 2.0l engine!!

dude im selling my r33 if ya interested let me know

im buying an s15 or 350z and a house....

reason for selling s15 does beta on fuel....

its newer car..

but as u said insurance is cheaper on an s15, there the same maybe even more...

and as performance there the same my mate has an s15 with similar mods even more as he has full exhuast i have cat back we go head to head depending on who has the beta launch.

A r33 is the best car for the price u get a lot of powerand make a lot heads turn for $20g

but what u pay for is what u get

if u think u can get a clean nice no accident low km S15 for $30g GOODLUCK!

if i was you i was spend 20-25 and get a clean decent r33 instead of getting a rough s15 for $30g

do i make sence...

Depends wat you classify as low km's RON15H... I have my immaculate non accident Black 6 speed 2001 Spec S15 for sale for $32k with 45,000km's on it. As advertised on these forums.

The S15 is the best car i have owned/driven.. All the luxuries/benefits of a near new car... Great looks, Great sound and fantastic performance from nothing more than a exhaust and air filter.

I could of got a R33 like every mana nd his dog in Asutralia for $20 and spent $5 - $10k on it but i chose the S15... and don't regret it at all!

Scott

mmmm good for you...

but what makes u say that a skyline is "every mana nd his dog"

i paid half the price for my car than an s15 driven both of them.

i classify low km as 25000km and less

i drive the s15 regurlary as 2 of my best mates have them i wouldnt pay double the price to get one.

002nvs depends on ya budget buddy and what ya reason that ya selling the car?

I say every man and his dog drives one becuase there are so many of them around now... Hard for me to say for Sydney but there are alot around Brisbane.

Its perfectly reasonable that you wouldnt want to pay $30+k for an S15.. each to there own, I had the moeny so i bought it, and as i said i much prefer it over my R32 and any R33 i've driven or been in. Don't forget insurance is cheaper, running costs over time are cheaper due to the skyline being an older car mroe and more things tend to break.

I dont see how $30k is double the price? You can get 33's for $25k and you can get S15's for $28 at the lowest. Looking at both ends of the scale you have to ask yourself is it worth paying $3 - $5k for a better/newer car?

The reason i'm selling is because i have purchased a block of land and to build the house i need to sell the car.

when i was buying my r33

i had low 20s to spend

there were no s15 2nd for sale and if there were it was the same price as an brand new as they started from $41spec s -$46spec r GT

there for i got what i paid for a smick r33 low km with a few extras at the time buying an s15 is buying a big dig with no balls no extras and then u have to pay about $3g to make them look good:-

lowered

wheels

take the wing off

exhaust

yet spending 22g plus on road

i got an r33 black

18"

sunroof

exhuast

front mount

bov

air filter

boost controller

climate control

turbo timer

coil overs

FOR GUILTY point of view YES u get more things in a r33 for lower price but yet its personal choise on which car you like or appeals to you

in both options r33 and s15 there is pros and cons to both side

To me the R33 is just a nicer car. It looks nicer and is generally a higher-end car than the S15. Sure the S15 is faster mod for mod, but that's only because it's like 200kg lighter and not because the SR20 is a better engine. Why do you think there are so many S15's with RB25 conversions? I don't know of any R33's with an SR20 conversion. The closest I've seen is Meggala's R32 SR20 conversion, but that's understandable because it's the same capacity but lighter weight than what was in there.

It depends on what you want from a car. If you want best performance bang for buck, then the S15 is probably a better choice. But for most people there is more to a car than that. And as I've said before, my motorcycle generally kills both anyway :)

I sold my S15 last month for $33k with 27000kms on the clock. I'm sure I could have gotten more but I thought I'd sell it asap. Not sure what they're going for still but they are coming down in price. The S15 was an awesome car, I would recommend it. However, I didn't mod it but I've heard it responds well to mods. My friend has an R33 and our cars were pretty similar in performance as both were stock. I think the S15 handles a lot better though.

Anyway, in your position, I would get the S15 (if you intend to keep it for a while) as it's newer, less problems, looks slick in my opinion and performs very well. Also, better resale I believe.

I guess it's all subjective....

I don't know much about cars, but personally I prefer the R32 to the 33 - it's 140k's lighter so really good in corners, and better on fuel. I also like the front end better. The other thing I like about the 32's is that they are originals - the first of a new generation and there's fewer of them around than the 33's. If it were my money, I'd get a 32 and over-capitalise with the money you spend on it like, cai, intercooler, wheels, suspension blah blah - make it so it outhandles everything! For me, handling's where it's at. I do about 25 to 30 k a year so I have to think about things like fuel as I have two vehicles to run.

I think we need to think about how long we want to keep cars too and whether they are good investment.

Take an HSV for eggzample. I know a bloke who bought one new and kept it for 10 rears. It was in really good nik when he traded it - for 50k less than it cost. That's a lot of depreciation!

If you want to really keep a Skyline for 10 years, I bet you won't lose much money at all if it's kept mint.

I happen to think that both the S15 and Lines are cult cars, possibly classics in a sense. I think the Skylines are technically better - Hicas (they turn on a dime) - double wishbones etc; it's a lot of bang for your bucks!

Back when I was young.....

When S15 first came out, I was deciding between it and R33. Both were same price $45k (2000 S15 or 97 GTST).

I'd had a S14 before before and love the whole RWD tubro thing :)

In the end I bought the R33 coz its a bigger, more comfortable car. 200sx is WAY too small in the back, sometimes I have to carry humans....

As for performance, I believe both are very comparable (S15 marginally faster), but either can go as fast as your wallet allows :(

for me, i will go for S15,which is a pure drift car n i'm getting bored of drving a skyline, and i dun care the back is small, Coz i never sit at the back!^.^for long term investment, S15 is yr only choice but its gonna scare u in rainy days while u turning in corners lol

Cars are NEVER 'investments'.

I think it's short sighted to say... "I'll buy an S15 as it's a better long term investment".

Gimme a break. Go buy a house if you want to invest.

You buy a newer, more expensive car, you lose more money on resale.

The bottom line is that the s13/14/15 or r32/33/34 are all COMMON cheap RWD cars.

They have no collectability, they're all reasonable expensive to run, maintain and they'll all tank to some degree on resale IF you can find a buyer.

I enjoy it for what it is - a fast, RWD car. Poor resale means that I can afford a car like this. It's all about bang for buck and IMO the Skyline has it.

If you want something rare to a degree, get a V-Spec GT-R.
