I always assumed I got my P's before the changes in forced induction came into play, but I recently discovered they had not. I need a new car, and don't have long left on my P's anyway. So I'd rather buy a nice car now and drive it legally, than buy a shitter, try and sell it, and then buy a nice car once I'm on my full license.

Anyway, the old P plate restrictions were only 3.5l engine per ton and/or 125kw per ton.

What I want to know is what turbo charged cars can I still drive? Is the kw taken from the flywheel (because that rules out a lot of cars, including R33 GTSTs) or is it from the wheel? Does anyone have a list of common turbo charged cars P platers used to drive?

For reference, here's the official vicroads site;

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Licens...werVehicles.htm

And here's the official power to weight calculator;

http://webapps.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrne/vr...pwcalc?OpenForm

Thanks.

Lots of information about this already. Try search some previous posts.

Its taken from the flywheel, whatever the factory figure is.

R33 gtst is out.

As far as skylines you can get a R32 gtst or any NA model.

It's nothing to do with turbo or non turbo. It's having to do with power to weight ratio.

You can't have NA V35 or 350Z either. Having 206kw at flywheels and around 1500kg is = 137kw/tonne which is way OVER the 125kw/tonne limit.

On the other hand if you have a Mini Cooper turbo (Cooper-S) which has 120kw - YES you can drive it on your P-Plates.

Unless there is another 'disclaimer' umbrella clause that rules out any form of forced induction or any engine with more than 6 cylinders... I don't know...

^^Thats what I don't get.

So the Power to Weight Ratio for the R32 GTS-T and the Mini Cooper S Turbo is fine to drive but both being turbocharged...

I thought the "New" P plate laws state you can drive any turbocharged car... High powered V6 and 8's.

I don't have a common list of turbo cars you can drive legally but take a look at this site for skylines:

http://imports.motortraders.net/imports/se...p;model=Skyline

get their power and weight numbers and punch em into the vic roads calculator site you mentioned and it will show you.

I see alot of people get confused about the p plate laws so here it is in basic form.

Old laws: No car can be driven if it's over the 125kw / 1 tonne, 3.5L / 1 tonne rules, doesn't matter if turbo or not.

New laws: Strictly no turbo, V8 or selected ''high powered'' cars can be driven, however you can drive a car that is turbo if it's diesel.

and don't forget with the new laws the old 125kw / 1 tonne, 3.5L / 1 tonne rules still applies. So if you got your P's before 1 July 2007 your on the old laws, if afterward your on the new laws.

hope i cleared that up a bit for some people, if I'm wrong feel free to correct me :(

a few turbo cars you could drive on the old laws that i can think of off the top of my head are...

r32 gts-t (debates around as this is VERY close to the limit)

r32 gts-4

S14 200sx (aus spec)

S15 200sx (aus spec)

how long do you have left? S15 would be a nice upgrade from your current 15year old car if you still want a turbo.

Nice, I love the S15's, but I thought they were over the limit. Turns out I was looking at the 187kw NZ delivered ones.

Another random question, where can I find these cars? Obviously private sales would be the way to go, but if I wanted to find a dealer to look/test drive both the S14 and S15 where would I go? I've never seen either at an import dealership.

Thanks again guys.

series 1 r32 gtst are believed by many to be illegal to drive for a p plater pre july 2007 as they are slightly lighter to the series 2 r32 gtst's.

i have had both and am a pre july 2007 p plater. the rego sticker on my 89 model (series 1) r32 had 1200 and my 92 model (series 2) r32 has 1400.

although rego mass varies from car to car if yoiu had something like that on ur r32, to any cop that would pretty much answer it right there and then that it is illegal for you to drive unless u go into technicalities and the cop actually believes you.

depends what u wanna buy though. any skyline other then a series 2 r32 gtst or NA's is illegal to drive. good choice would be to get a S15 aus spec. then again if i were u i'd probably go the jap spec as u won't have alot till you get off the p's.

www.carsales.com.au is a good place to start. Go for a private sale. You'll save some money and you'll have more options to choose from usually.

Haha, my first post, do u feel lucky punk?

but seriously, iv'e been thinking of buying a V35 for a while now and im on the new Reds P's (Shit or what?) and i checked out the Vic roads site and it stated,

1)"The previous power to weight restriction will continue to apply to any probationary driver who obtained their licence before 1 July 2007."

2)"However, if a probationary driver with a pre-July 2007 licence has a car that does not meet the power to weight restrictions, but it does comply with the new high powered vehicle restrictions effective from July 2007, then the probationary driver may drive the car."

So this leads me to my next point, is it worth buying one and winging it on these provisions? As stated, by the sound of things, i am legally aloud to drive a V35, even though the 350Z is on the banned list, but this isnt a 350Z, also, has anyone ever been pulled over in a V35 and the cop/cops have no idea about the car, as in they've never seen one etc etc.

Might post a thread of my own about this.

Thanx guys

HAHAHAHA where did you find that Pat?

i scanned and posted that picture years ago!!!! ... my friendly local cop gave me that.. the smart arse even put a dash next to r33 gts-t to show me i was wrong ... even after 2 power/weight fines in 24 hours from him :P
