Nice car Noddy,

I would really like to keep the GTST but i am a bit hesitant to strip out the interior and fit a cage etc. Once i have done this i will not be able to get it re regoed and there is no other class for it to race in other than sprints if i ever want to go further due to engine mods.

What to do?

Sounds like you have made ya mind up Ryan!

You really want to get into more racing, so unfort mate, looks like the 33 would have to go....depends though, hows your salary? :P have both? skyline and race car? :D

thats the single mans dream who still lives at home. lol. Married men arent allowed to have two cars weevil, you know that silly.

Sucks to be you, married and tied down to only 1 fun car. The minister for war and finance in our house drifts and is comming sprinting this year as well. At last count there were 15.5 cars in the yard(big yard). 3 fords, 6.5 nissans, 4 toyota's, 1 holden enhanced by nissan and 1 Chev.

Yer i really just want more track time and the skyline will cost a fair bit more to get it tracking often, and i don't want to destroy a nice street car.

I still only want to do sprints etc for the next while but it would be good to have a go a door to door racing one day when i am a bit more experienced and skill full.

I will really miss the big girl we have been together for about 5 years now.

The misses is trying to talk me into keeping it and still getting another but 4 cars and a trailer is a bit much for me, But the insurance company would love it ay.

Feel free to PM me your thoughts if you think i am being a goose.

LOL @ Stuart!

Yeah Im in the same boat as Ryan (haha no pun intended!) and most people here, Im getting married next year, about to buy a house...The skyline is going to stay for a while for me!

Noddy - Lucky for some! :P NSW is the most expensive state, it sucks, I wanna move to a cheaper state so I can have more toys, more space and fun haha

whoops I am a late arrival.

FIrst thing is be ready to make a decision that your road car is not a track car. I took almost 3 years to make that decision with my r33 gtst with track days pretty much every month. I was pretty dumb.

These cars are getting really cheap. Buy a track only car and you will save a heap because you don't need to compromise. eg. I used to do pads every 5 days and rotors skimmed every 3 days. over time this really added up but it seemed cheap at the time because I paid the bill in bits.

For under 5k you can buy any rolling shell - silvia/gtst/gtr. personally i think 32 gtst is the best choice due to wieght/suspension design/price of bits, but up to you. you can put anything up to 3l/26head in it so you can have any power level you can afford. And its legal for ipra.

I went 32 gtr for 2 reason - I wanted to do targa tas and I wanted to door to door race (production cars). It is able to be competitive in both even 20 years later. But you need to understand its not a cheap option, my gtr has cost about 50k over 5 years for only 1 targa and about 10 race rounds. Better to stick with something like a 32 gtst for about $2k + say 10k work to get a good track car. Then run it in the MSA series Brad mentioned + supersprints + hillcimbs. You can be competive outright and still have low budget.

Great Advise.

Remember in IPRA if you change the block and or head from the original motor you have to race at a minimum weight. So a R32 GTS-T had a RB20, if you fit a RB25, RB26 or RB30 you will have to weigh 1400kgs!

Ash

Ryan, that evo would be the pick of those four!

Duncan, great advice mate! Is that 50k over 4 years include purchase of Gtr? Did you build it up or buy already done?

I know what you mean about your old 33 gtst, sounds like Ryan and myself now!! Ha ha

yeah well the problem is the 33 gtst is such a damn good car. It puts up with light track work over and over without breaking anything expensive so you just keep using it. There was a while I was doing a track day every month for about 2 years with only brakes and fuel to replace. In the end when I sold the motor was gone and it needed right rear wheel bearing (too much eastern creek i guess) but that was all.

anyway....try not to get sucked in like I did, it is more expensive than it looks and you have to compromise on all bits when its a road and track car. Go track only car with rally rego and you don't need to compromise, it is all track....

re $50k over 5 years... yes that includes buying the car, it was $9k. You have to remember road/rally imports are dirt cheap because there is no compliance cost and you dont have to start with a clean/straight car, in fact it is better not to because you are just going to smash it some day some how. Also I have spent about 20k on engine rebuilds in that time, some very cheap and some very expensive....not sure if that should be a guide or not. We have done the bulk of the work in the driveway but do get maybe 20% of things done by various workshops (either when I'm in a rush, or its a nasty job)

Cheers Duncan, you certainly have got me intersted in this now!!

But with the race/rally rego, would you be able to get that for, say I had a race only silvia, if I got it logged booked like yours, but only raced in supersprints, not targa or production like what you do, would that still be elgable for that rego? Or already buy a logged car, then apply for that rego? And it can be used for any club event as long as there is a permit? (like our Xmas cruise?)

Sorry to hijack thread Ryan!!!

you have to have it log booked with cams and from memory (duncan will correct me if im wrong) need to have a cams NC licence to hold race/rally rego in NSW.

Providing there is a CAMS permit for the event and the car is road worthy then you can use the vehicle.

Ryan I think you would have a lot of fun at our local Hillclimb... you can always stay with us. First event is next Sunday and only need your L2S. Much the same setup as the speed weekend only more spectator friendly i.e. start and finish in the pits (full loop).

Check it out on http://www.sdmahillclimb.com/ entries close on Thursday 5th Feb.

YOU TOO CHUBBS!!! you said you would this year :P

I don't really want to get another car that I have to do bucket loads of engine mods to make it competitive or I will end up with another car that is not eligible for any class.

I have been thinking of maybe an evo 6 maybe with a std evo 9 turbo and std boost etc you can get decent power at the wheels and a good chassis and not bad weight, I will just have to look into diffs etc?

I can not find any info on this MSA series, can anyone help out?

Sorry to hijack thread Ryan!!!

No worries bud, It is all good info.

  • 2 weeks later...

This has got me really interested too!

My baby has sat unregistered in some position around the yard for almost a year and a half now. I really miss driving it. :D

I've heard the best way for low budget weekend warriors is to go into a vehicle with a mate and share the costs. Any of you guys who do this regularly now been in that situation? Does it work out well?

    • Structured text and other high level PLC programing languages are not allowable in Functional Safety. They are very difficult to audit. My PLC stuff is almost exclusively oriented towards Burner Management Systems which are a particularly pernicious form of Safety Instrumented System, when implemented in an SPLC. Even the part of the code written to work in the non-safety logic part of the PLC, like with a Siemens S7-1500 series, still needs to be treated as if it was safety code, with access restrictions, code fingreprints and the like. And Allen Bradley can go EABODs. They ae full of shit. They have this whole lie going on where they say if you use a ControlLogix controller and its IO, and then just duplicate the IOs (ie, run in series or parallel depending on type, to try to make it "fail safe") and "use these programming styles and place these restrictions on what you do" that you can achieve SIL2. What a load of crap. They just get away with it because no-one in the US seems to understand the first thing about Functional Safety and carries on as if all they have to do is buy only SIL2 rated equipment and hey presto, it's a SIL2 system. Idiots. /rant
    • If you're really considering leaving it, a great question to ask is, is the magnet going to stick to the sump? The answer to the above is the same answer towards if I'd have any level of comfort leaving it... Personally, based on the cost of a motor if the magnet were to cause damage, I'd be fishing it out either way. Use the methods in here. It fit in through the plug hole, it'll come out.   PS, get a small actuatable claw for a bore scope. OR if you know a vet, they have really cool controllable scopes with hooks on the end. Supposedly they're like playing a video game. Ask if they can acquire you one of their scopes... Engine oil after all is just a different type of lube right? Will only make it easier on the next dog or cat...
    • All other (Boolean) logic functions though, are just built on those blocks above. Which does give you a lot of functionality in logic. It is basing that on using thresholds with analogue signals like GTS alluded to.   Not having things like timers will make it less useful for some of the ramp up logic you'd want, and again, on Haltecs capacity specifically, I'm not across anymore what you can / can't do with different tables.   I'm assuming, with your logic you want to implement, not only do you want your timing safeties, you're wanting to be able to derive the duty cycle for your solenoid, to maintain I'm assuming 175PSi? Or are you using a standalone WMI controller to maintain the DC correct, and you just want the Haltech working out which fuelling maps you should be on?
    • It doesn't seem to follow revs. Oddly it seems to follow TPS a little bit from what I can see, but with some delay a bit. IE end of the graph, when he lets off throttle fully, pressure drops a lot, then slowly builds back up, but rpm is on a nice cruisey drop off. I do agree though, it seems very electrically.
