I bought some -5 turbos for my GTR and I went to buy a few parts to fit it from ATS down here in Adelaide. He said that I should run the car with turbos off for 15 seconds, measuring the oil flow out of the lines, im pretty sure he said 400 ml for the 15 seconds, but i would have to check that might have been for a full minute, anyway. I have heard of doing this, but do i really need t? Garrett say that ball bearing turbos use less oil then there journal bearing brothers, and mine were working fine before, so should it work fine now. The reason for checking is he said he usually enlarges the restrictor holes in the banjo that goes into the block as there is a lack of oil supply standard.

I then rang GCG turbos for a quit question, the guy said that he doesn't even have a oil flow figure to give me, he said they just make sure the lines are clean, and even preferably new.

Are you people running the stock system with no issues?

I am with HKS GT-SS, bolt on off we go.

Being they all use the same cartridge as i understand it, just different wheels... should be the same

Only issue you might have is if you bent the lines while doing the swap over.

If your sure they are as you took em off (i hope you gave em a bit of a flush out too) then you should be right.

Also i flushed the water lines (slight build up on the insides that we managed to notice and get out)

Suppose you could check if you need too...

Also, the restrictors are actually built into the turbo. It will not really benefit you to drill out the factory banjo but it won't hurt you either.

Well what youre supposed to do with garret BB turbos is to leave the factory lines well alone and have a restrictor of some size in the end of the banjo bolt.

Like you said BB dont require as much oil so thats how you go about it.

If you dont, the turbos may be fine for 6 months but eventually theyll start blowing oil and the seals will be munched from the excess oil supply.

But this all depends on your engine / oil / oil pump / oil pressure setup too, for a stock engine you may need to do nothing.

well i have a jun pump so i would need to do this?

I rang GCG, he said he wouldn't even have a flow rate to give me to tell me what is correct, also garrett supply no flow rate, just say try not to have over 40 psi of pressure.

If it's a Garrett GT turbo the restrictor is built into the turbo. You do not need to put in another one.

If it's a HKS turbo it's the same because it's just a Garrett turbo anyway.

As long as you are running 100psi maximum or under, then you do not need to do anything. If you are going to run over 100psi oil pressure at WOT then you may need to put in an extra restrictor. If you tell me what turbo it is, I can tell you what restrictor is in place.

Tell him to go back to the 80's.

I'm finding out about the restrictors now for the -5. I'll let you know when I get the phone call back from Garrett

i have the -5s as well mate...

i was told its built into the turbo just bolt them on and there ready to go!

all i had to do to fit them was die grind out the oil return plates to suit the bolt holes....

The restrictor is about 1/4 the size of the oil line feed that goes to the turbo

So I fail to see how there couldn’t be enough.

Maybe if you were pumping the oil around the motor by hand or something?

If thats what the turbo guy is telling you - go elsewhere

He isnt my turbo guy, i just went there to buy some studs to install these puppies, then he harped on about this other shit and i just wanted to check. I have other ballbearing turbos on sr20s and my friends s14 with no issues what so ever.

The oil restrictor in the 707160-5 is 0.75mm +/- 0.05mm

Leave the factory restrictor in place as it helps to reduce flow.

If you were having custom lines made with no restrictor, you may have issues with too much oil, in that case, add a 1.5 - 2mm restrictor before the one that is built into the turbo. It is best to fit these at the block end

Yeah on standard engines. So has my mate. 3071R on stock SR.

We all know even the wrong info can come from garret themselves.....

Just call Racepace, CRD or any other place who knows their shit with GTRs, they will give you the right answer.
