I'm looking to replace my bonnet in the future and leaning towards some of the bonnets from Unique Autosports, either fibre glass, or fibreglass with a carbon fibre wrap.

I'm aware that if i just bolt it straight on, i run the risk of being defected - fair enough.

What i'd like to know before going ahead and purchasing one, has anyone gone to the trouble of getting a bonnet such as these engineered? I've done some searching on the forums but i can't find much, so if anyone on here has had any experience, particularly in NSW i would be interested to hear it.

We have tried numerous avenues to try and get some sort of authority to approve fibreglass or carbon panels but we haven't had any luck. And before someone says "Blits have ADR approved hoods", they DON'T. Not only is this claim false, they don't even have a certificate Queensland Transport is happy to sign off on. It's a marketing gimmick that seems to have done very well for them. I'll keep searching for any sort of documentation we can provide our customers with to help with the boys in blue, as I feel your pain.

Thanks mate, that's exactly what i'm after, some real experience.

As for Blits, how can they be claiming to have ADR approval if they don't? From what i've gathered from their site they claim to have some sort of general approval but no ADR number. I'm really not clear on what all this means, hence why i'm asking here.

Nope.. they actually claimed it to be ADR approved. It was in an un-named magazine.. from which one of our own SAU members won the "ADR APPROVED BLITS BONNET"

Big bold writing on the top of the promotion :)

Read their website.. Says they meet all ADR approved standards but do NOT have ADR approval.. As yes they must be crash tested, in which they havent done.. instead they got QLD Transport approval.. So may be the fact that you get a QLD transport letter stating that in QLD it's ok do have the bonnet..

Now i swear a while ago they stated ADR.. hmmm

i have a fiber glass bonnet with carben fibre inserts which i got defected for but took it to regency with the bonnet on and the approved it so maybe they were having a ggod day lol

From what I gather talking to various people the certificate doesn't even cover you with Queensland Transport, let alone any other state. It's a bit hit and miss, as the certificate only states they meet certain requirements, however it's not official as it's issued by themselves and I believe they do not have the authority to state that the product actually passes those requirements.

Thought i'd send Blits an e-mail and try to get some clarification, they sent this info back

as far as transport goes as they are engineered to federal ADR standards and each

bonnet is registered to each vin number and rego number of each vehicle they

go on as they are numbered ( the bonnets) they are okay in NSW ,if it

changes, as I have your details I will be able to make the changes and

contact you with the details for you, but there is no problem at the moment

and I can't see that changing ,the worst it would be is you would have to

have it sighted by NSW transport and they to then give you a certified

letter of approval which I would arrange for you

Has anyone had any luck getting an engineers certificate for an aftermarket bonnet? Seems like this would probably be the best option if it's possible.

I honestly didn't think it was possible, however I'm more than happy to be proven wrong. Although having said that one of our customers has seeked approval through his local authorities.

they are approved here in qld we got a few cars running them, as mentioned under the bonnet is the serial # registered to the vehicle, u have to be careful not to respray over this then ur stuffed. but i dunno bout other states, NSW is stupid for defects i remember when i used to live there

ben...

Do you know if it was a fibreglass bonnet, or carbon fibre/carbon fibre top layer?

Pretty sure it was fibreglass. I can't seem to find the email the customer sent after he got approval.

    • GTSBoy on your suggestion on another thread I had a look at those injectors and ended up getting them because of the quality.  Got the expensive ones.
    • Hey guys been looking everywhere to try and find the correct gtr hood latch support part number but only found the first half and when I search with that number it sends me to an r34. The first part I found was 62515. If anyone could help me with the rest then I’d really appreciate it. Or if there’s some alternative hood latch support that would work even better cause I can’t find any for sale. (Searched on upgarage, partsouq, buyee, rhdjapan)
    • If you've only done the upper control arms on the rear, AND you have changed their length (by more than about 1mm) to set the camber you want, then you will definitely need/want to install traction arms also. Adjusting the camber arms on their own WILL introduce bump steer and make the car unpleasant to drive. Most owners have no idea that their car could behave infinitely better than what they put up with. I'm not entirely sure what the Stageas need, but I am thinking that unless you have massive front spring rates and pretty soft rear springs, you have waaaay too much rear bar. Oversteer city, in my estimation. Combined with possible excessive bump steer from maladjusted arms, that could be a recipe for nastiness. ATR43SS2 is not a highflow. It is an outright replacement turbo. It's a little bit bigger than the largest highflow profile that Tao does. Probably a solid 300rwkW turbo where the bigger highflows will be about 30-40rwkW less. Nevertheless, we're only talking about ~300 rwkW, which is well within the abilities of the stock ECu to run with a Nistune on board. I would do so without hesitation - and I will be doing so when I get my finger out and actually get the injectors and AFM installed. But, if you would prefer to drop a whole lot more money on the ECU side, then I suspect you're looking at Haltech. The Haltech fanbois here will all spout on about all the available engine protection you can have, that you can't have with the Nistune option. And they're right. But it doesn't really come for free either. You will spend more money on extra sensors and the like, plus the work to install them. If the engine was built and therefore represented a big investment to protect, then I'd say definitely do it. If you view the current (and forever into the future) shortage of replacement engines as something to prompt similar protection, then also, do it. If you see a destroyed RB25 as an opportunity to put in a Mercedes or other V12 (like I kinda do)... then your perception of the risk/reward might differ. These are good injectors. You can also get a "better" set of the same with more flow matching, for more $$. 1000cc is where you will want to be. You will need an R35 AFM and adapter tube if you want to stay with Nistuned stock ECU. Otherwise, if going Haltech, you can ignore. As for intercooler. Just about anything will do. You're only talking about ~300rwkW. Just put a big core in there. Be aware that return flows do add significant pressure drop and will cost power and will make the turbo work harder to achieve the same goals. If you can manage a proper crossflow, do it. I'm keeping my very good return flow because I'm only expecting to be in the ~250rwkW range, and will live with whatever outcome I get.
    • I have a heap that i have collected if you want some authentic ones still. Pm me if your interested!
