Hey Fellas,

I just bought some Tomei Poncams off a SAU member and arrived in the mail today

but when i opened up the package, the both cams had a lobe that was chipped! but no bits were found in the package!

Will these need to be rebuilt or are they going into the bin?

Here is a picture of one of the Poncams! sorry for bad quality, i've only got a phone camera

Please let me know! :) i feel jibbed!

this may sound dumb but make sure they werent taken off for balancing before you go adding more metal to it (although it does look like a strange place to be taking off metal). ask the seller about it.

They are made from chilled cast iron, so you are limited as to what you can do. If they were mine, and the budget precluded buying some more, then I'd take a very fine engineers stone and VERY CAREFULLY dress the edges of the fractures to make sure no rough edges can gouge the buckets. There should be no sign of more material being removed by the stone, just makes sure the very edges are dressed. They should, unless cracked invisibly, run OK like that. I have run worse when a replacement hasn't been available and a race engine had to get out there at short notice. When you renew them, if you run them as is, change the buckets on the the 2 damaged lobes. It's a shame they are chipped on a load bearing part of the lobes, you have lost maybe a 1/7 th of the lobe width, which puts the load up by that amount on both bucket and lobe, but it's an OHC engine and being Poncams run stock (soft) springs, so the loads are not great anyway. Good luck....

if you expected to get a set of undamaged cams it's unacceptable. take this up with the seller.
yeh i would be worried about using those , they will work but for how long? risky, i would be taking it up with the seller they obviously know they were chipped unless theyre blind!!

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
