pistol-pete
GTRsean, bin the compliance cat and replace it with decat while you're at it. fixed Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/254450-79s-or-5s-garretts/page/20/#findComment-5415330 Share on other sites
Count Grantleyish
^^^ that is what i'm running at the moment, for some 'soft' people would like hi-flow cat. De-cat is good for flames and you want heaps of 'em! GTRsean
Lol! My -9's didn't come with actuators, and I thought I could 'cheat'. Nope you gotta spend the $$$ lol. Yeah, the nasty compliance cat won't be there for long, but I will still run a cat as I'm soft and don't want the hassles.... GTRsean
Here's a dyno graph of the run, after tuning. Done in RWD. Also forgot to mention adjustable cam gears, but I haven't checked em. now pic works! usmair
Okay. Got a tune done the other day.Bad news is the stock actuators I put on the -9's can't control the wastegates properly so the boost is wavy lol, even boost controller couldn't keep it steady. So new stronger adjustable one's are on order. So good news is the car runs pretty well now and good response, mid range torque is great! Boost peaked at 18PSI and 288RWKW @6500PRM to 8000. 10psi at 3300 15psi at 3700 18psi at 4000 16 at 4900 15.5 at 5300 16 at 6400 etc. So that was with stock intake, stock fuel system, stock AFM's. Non standard parts: boost controller, -9's, Power fc, intercooler, front pipe, and 3 inch cat back, and compliance cat. interesting... im getting 270rwkw at 15psi almost the same mods as yous... except no boost controller, cooler or front pipe lol that boost curve is all over the shop i've bought a metal racing cat which i will 'modify' for more flow and looking for a decent front pipe... once those are in my boost should come on as early as yours then to get some AFMs n injectors n put 20psi through it Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/254450-79s-or-5s-garretts/page/20/#findComment-5416515 Share on other sites
GTRsean
Um, yeah! 20psi will work well. You will feel the push in the back then. I'm only planning to run 18psi.....or so. pistol-pete
hey probably noobish question here guys but will the actuators that came with my -5's be able to control boost properly once i get my pfc/injectors in and turn the boost up? Count Grantleyish
If the actuators are adjustable Garrett ones that is included with -5s, they should be able to control the boost better than standard. N1GTR
I'm only planning to run 18psi.....or so. Under 20psi makes baby Jesus cry Lol What are your thoughts on them compared to the r32 setup now you've had them tuned etc and it's a more of less fair comparison until you build the motor and turn it up Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/254450-79s-or-5s-garretts/page/20/#findComment-5418473 Share on other sites
GTRsean
Ha ha Steve-o, yeah 25PSI feels strong lolz! This setup feels a lot more alive, especially in the twisties. Found that I could stay in a higher gear and not have to rev the guts out of it. It was hitting 18psi around 3600 or so in 3rd and 4th etc when I glimpsed at the display accelerating up slight hilly corners tonight. In a straight line though, it doesn't feel as aggressive as the 2530's on the 32, but the speedo says otherwise.... I liked the way the 2530's came onto boost and charged towards 8000rpm, but there wasn't much happening under 5000rpm, so the 34 with the -9's do work out well, and is just as fast as the 32 with less hp. I wanted more under the curve this time and considering the 34 is heavier, it worked out well. Ploding along in traffic is easy and I find I don't need much throttle to get going. When one of my mates was driving back in his car after we picked up my car, he said that he could hear the tyres ripping into the road when I accelerated in 1st and 2nd gears, I just laughed as I thought it was funny, but it really has got a nice strong torque band. Injectors are on 92% duty so there is a little left in them. Better actuators are on order and a better cat converter. I'm sure this will make it a little better again, so I'm happy with the results. discopotato03
Yes that's how I would expect these -9/GTSS turbos to work . The reason why they feel good is because they make good torque at lower revs so you don't have to chase high revs to get some pull . Yes the 2530 and similar dryers make the numbers buts that's because the higher RPM numbers artificially raise the Hp/Kw number . Torque is the measure of turning force and more torque means more acceleration and yes the ability to pull higher gears from the lower mid range engine revs wise . Eventually people tire of being impressed by high revs and want things that haul from lower revs , often just as fast but a LOT easier to drive and live with . The feller in the post above I'm sure can understand what I mean when I say these turbos to a degree mimic a larger capacity engine which is what GTRs always needed . With stripped out tarmac racers no one cares what happens south of 4000 revs but when in road going guise that tonne and a half takes some moving when stopping and starting and slothing around in today's traffic levels . I personally think anyone who wants a fast std capacity road weight GTR has rocks in their heads for not using these turbos . These are good road cars units , maybe not so good for drag or a real racer buy they are so far divorced from what makes a road car good as to be irrelevant . Your opinions your calls , I don't like/have GTRs but if I had to have one they are what I'd use on the street . A . UNR33L
Whats better out of -7s and -9s or am I silly for asking this question? Looking at options for my street GTR (which sees a track every couple of months) and looks like everyone loves the -9s and thinks -5s are too laggy, I am very tempted to buy some new -5s cheap off a member here but don't want to regret it? If I had the following basic mods: full exhaust including 3" straight through cat, stock dumps cam gears power fc apexi pods What would you do and would you do more things at the same time to make it more worth while? Count Grantleyish
Leigh, Go for -9s, you won't regret it, you're welcome to ride in my R before you decide if you want (that'd have to be next week as I'm moving houses tomorrow and rest of this weekend - late night may be a option). Have you changed the clutch yet? Done 100,000km service? That's all I can think of for now. Cheers Grant Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/254450-79s-or-5s-garretts/page/20/#findComment-5428079 Share on other sites
