Misfire And Popping From Exhaust

I got my r33 tuned, it currently has a haltech intercepter and high flow turbo that gcg have told me can run 20psi no problems.

My tuner (who is a bit of a muppet)tuned my car at 12psi, because he said the extra few kw wasn't worth it for the extra pressure. He told me he ran it at 20psi and it ran fine and didn't lean out. So after i got the car back i pushed the boost up to see how it would go. At 15psi it really halls and feels like a different car compared to 12psi. I tryed to push it more to 17psi and it started popping out the exhaust and it also had a bad missfire (the car just completely cut for a second) as i was reving the gear out. It also blew off one of the vac lines, so i had to stop and put that back on. I got it back to 15 psi and it's happy. The thing i want to know is what might have caused the popping and missfire, and once your car is tuned, The fuel maps modified and the timing is advanced as much as possiable, How can you get more power out of it?

Yeh my guess is the coils... thats alot of boost to be running for stock ones..

If i run more than 14psi then mine misfires like that and thats with a 0.8mm gap on the plugs.

Id just stick with 15psi if it makes the car run nicely...

Splitfires with 1.1mm gap works even better!

Here's a question for you to think about...

You pushed the car to 17PSi, and mis fires like mad...

Yet your tuner told you it ran fine at 20PSi... Have you not yet thought he hasn't really tuned the car at all?

Get the car on the dyno, do some light load testing, then some full throttle runs. You need to check your AFRs

Yea im gonna ask for the dyno sheets for the 20psi runs on monday. i can run 13.2psi and it will rev out cleanly with no problems. But anything over that and as it gets up in the revs it will just cut out for a second and the whole car jurks.( im guessign thats a missfire?)

hey there,

my gtr does the same thing, i had a wrx with a link computer, gtr with a power fc, now running a G4 link, when summer comes it starts to run rich, backfires, popping, maybe just check your pugs and see if they are fouled?

my car does the same and i haven't been able to find anyone that knows the problem so thanks for the info, and whats the best to replace the standard ones with. Also do you have to change anything else or just put them in, the problem is so annoying especially underground car parks pops like a b***H.

Cheers scott

Gotta love this. I called the place that tuned my car and asked for the 20psi dyno sheets. he said that the runs weren't sucessful and that he didn't save the runs.... Now how could he tell me that it ran 20psi and the mixtures were fine??? God this place is getting worse and worse.

    • there are probably many ways to do it for my bosch motorsport abs we used a r33 gtst abs front knuckle and modified the rear knuckle to allow sensor to sit and read understand time, effort and $$ but reading from anywhere else  you get diff chatter etc where you lose 30% ish in signal clarity compared to the above
    • Little more work!  Did some body work on the rear wheel arches and since the paint was a cheap spray job before figured I’d do something to tide me over until I wrap the car.    Colour might not be everyone’s choice but I like it and it’s only temporary, just hate having primer from the wheel arches standing out.    Keeping an eye out for a decent set of wheels to throw on now. Wheels and tires on the car are junk
    • Its likely to be 70% road 30% track usage, track usage will increase if anything. Decided not to fit it as I cant be arsed changing the bushes on my LCAs again 🤣 I did get the below back from GKTech though so they should work together     The anti-squat kit and roll center adjusters work independently since they change the rear lower control arm's angle in different ways. The anti-squat kit adjusts the angle from front to back, which impacts anti-squat values. Roll center adjusters change the angle side to side, mainly to correct geometry on cars that are significantly lowered. They might affect each other a tiny bit, but overall, you can think of them as separate.
    • What are you doing with the car? street car or race car? People get hung up on the squat of the s/r chassis rears. There is positives to the squat if a car is setup and driven correctly for it (correct ride height, spring rate, alignment, damper valving). Generally just lengthen the rear traction arm by 5-10mm and that will help the squat and bump steer too. You are also correct with the roll centre too. This too also needs to be adjustable if you start messing with suspension geometry.   Having done quiet a bit of testing on race cars this year in regards to rear squat, I've seen some big positives from it in regards to drive off corners and traction.
    • I find I am using the MX5 for everything except long overnight cruises with Jackie, or, if picking up the kids to go somewhere, the SS has so much more room inside, and is much more comfortable if your going to be doing Hwy driving for 6-8 hours And the MX5 isn't bad in stop go traffic for a manual transmission car, whilst the clutch kit has been upgraded from stock, it is still light, and also not having a stupidly light flywheel in it helps as well, I've spent alot of time sitting on the M5, M4 and M7 stuck in traffic when plodding around the Greater Sydney Region in it Another benefit is MX5's are not really a car that gets stolen, you can pretty much park it anywhere, and it will still be there when you return
