hello fellow northerners. forgot to check the forums, will have to sift through this thread soon.

so being whittlesea glass and mirrors (although in epping), a lot of our customers and friends have been affected, and unfortunately we've even lost a few to the fires. hopefully everyone from SAUVIC in the area are safe and haven't lost any loved ones among the carnage

I like the way certain people in this thread go out of their way to attack greens, when it is entirely possible that this situation is potentially a result of climate change. All about perspectives and giving some time to other peoples... sorta the summary of this entire thread really.

edit: I saw the fire bunker someone had made out of what appeared to be a converted water tank. If I ever bought a property out that way I'd definitely be making myself one of these! He and his partner survived unscathed while the fire completely decimated the area.

I notice that your still alive and not too concerned about the build up of fuel laying around the countryside, maybe you should look to past when council had bushfires contained by measures that were learned the hard way and banned by "thinkers" such as you. Global warming has nothing to do with letting fuel build up to dangerous levels.

I feel very bad about what happened /happens ,I can understend why people lives in country areas...like I can understened people like me that lives in suburban areas (I live in Narre Warren)and if the wind changed it's direction the fire that started near the Harkaway area sure could claim more victims because it could affected more populated areas...my point is what happened ,nobody could predict it,circunstances were at it worst ,grass was dried out everywhere ,plants that the day before were green ,now are all dry ,no one saw it comming,and nobody was safe...I put myself in the placeof that people (just easy to say ,hope nobody has to go throught it)that lost more than propperties and memories,there's people that have lost family,friends,neighbours...lost of persons that make what your life is...so my condolences to that people that the fire took even a piece of their soul...

(one last thought like one character said in a tv series..."life is a bitch with a 20" strap on" cannot believe that bloke that HE stayed to save the house...and his family died...unf###%believable......................)

RIP to those lost, especially the 2 NS.com members who sadly didn't pull through.

It's saddens me everyday to read the paper and hear about this tragedy. Thank god for people like the CFA, who worked tirelessly to try and save peoples lives and homes. One of our apprentices at work is a CFA volunteer, and he done a 16-hour stint starting at Kinglake, and then doing asset protection at the Strathewen Ranges.

I'll definately be donating a few hundred dollars to the Red Cross the next couple of days, I cannot imagine the grief and heartache the survivors are going through, not only loosing their houses, but loosing neighbours, and possibly seeing people die right in front of you.

right wing is loving this, they haven't had a chance of a good old greeny bash for a while.

i think the previous posters comment re climate change was with regards to the actual atmospheric conditions of the day. The simple fact is that it was the HOTTEST day since records began, period. Could just be we were due for a hot day, could just be something has shifted climatically. Who knows, but i just hope the right wing can stop the green bashing for a second and i hope the left wing can stop the climate "bible" bashing for a moment, and let more important things take priority, there will be plenty of time for those things later.

Here is a scale of bushfire intensity. It's based on energy produced, in kW/m.

20-500 Low intensity, patchy burn (the intensity prescribed for most fuel reduction burns). Rapid recovery of ecosystems. Attack on the headfire is relatively easy

500-1700 Moderate intensity, little damage to ecosystems Direct attack usually succeeds, but headfire must be “pinched in” from the flanks

1700-3500 Medium intensity, trees are killed, no or few unburnt patches. Very slow recovery of ecosystems Direct attack not likely to be successful on head or flank fires

3500-7000+ High intensity, extensive and long-lasting damage to ecosystems Crown fires occur - suppression impossible

20,000+ Extreme fire behaviour, ecosystems wiped out Mass fires, firestorms - suppression impossible

Saturday's fire was 80,000kW/m.
