hey punters...

As some of you would know, I had my box removed and stripped to try and identify a noise that was coming emanating from it.

This 'noise' was pulsing at the same frequency as the engine rpm, and those 'oscillations' were feeding back to me via the clutch pedal and gear stick.... (my foot always rests on the clutch, it's just too big to put on that silly little foot rest)...

These 'pulses' occured in every gear (reverse also), when under some/a little load....almost a 'dull clicking' noise, from the gearstick!..(not the diff..lol!)

Ok..so the car's back (for a week now)....and as I get settled back into the feel of the car, am noticing that just in first and reverse gears now, that pulsing noise/feel is still emanating via the clutch, just a little, and only at very low/natural take off speeds.

It's barely audible, it's mainly that pulsing feel from the clutch (feedback) and the stick.

My other mechanic (not the guy I bought it from) drove it and said that this was the best manual V35 he'd ever driven, and he seemed to actually mean it.

But I'm a fussy kuunntz (prolly too fussy??), and therefore am throwing this issue over to you 6M guys....to see if you can replicate/understand/realise as normal (whatever) this thing.

Does your clutch/stick 'feel' engine RPM on take off?

I know that the V6 design (in general) isn't the most balanced engine format, physically speaking, (compared to a smooth inline 6)....

Is this normal...do ya feel it too?

cheers people......and have a great day! (a cooler one too!)

Dont know about the box but you will stuff the clutch resting your foot on the pedal.

ok....thankyou MLR.

I guess that's not quite the response I'm aiming for....but I DO appreciate it.

Cheers.

How was the gearbox mount when the box was pulled out, sometimes when these wear out you might get some vibration, maybe check engine mounts are tight/good condition as well.

Clutch thrust bearing, do you still get the noise with the clutch pedal in(to the floor)?

Just a thought, check you haven't flat spotted a tyre.

good point...I didn't ask about the actual mounts...they didn't mention anything there.

Thruster and spigot bearings are brand new...so too the fly wheel..(which is a more complex unit than I've ever seen).

Thrust bearing is good...

Mounts....geeee...I'll have to check that.

Car went in for a front and rear bumper re-spray......so i get her back on Friday. (Ultrafine BW)

I'm not taking her straight back to Frank (the seller), I'm going to Tony at TGS, (also a 24/7 warranty registered dealer) give him the car to use for a couple of days (as a daily driver, learn the car, if I can put it that way)

I'll get him to look more specifically at mounts......mmmm...never thought of that.

Thanks man!....

(i'll keep taking suggestions of that calibre!!)

Kinda hard to imagine what you're trying to convey with just words..

Not much help but my gearstick and clutch pedal gives feedback too.. as in i can feel the clutch against the flywheel manifesting as vibrations and slight noise and the gearstick also vibrates a bit. Oh, i can also feel vibrations/oscillations of the gears as rpm increases

I'm not the least bit worried about it though, it's a getrag box and from what i've felt and read, their boxes are tough but not smooth/refined..

Adds an element of toughness if you ask me lol...needs it too, car is so refined in stock guise.

wow!....for someone who was struggling with my explanantion, you've managed to respond wonderfully!!!

This is exactly the type of response I was looking for........in that, at least, I'm not alone.

It's just that it feels rather cheap, imho, not like a 35K car.....my other lines were rougher, but not like this, not in the clutch/gearbox, by way of feel.

Maybe it is the combination of the (naturally unbalanced) V6 format, and the Getrag?....I hope I can get it smoothed out, just a little.

(again, I am quite fussy with this kind of shit).

Thanks again!

How are the clutch plates, are they glazed because that will cause massive vibration...

You mention the clutch bearing is new but if the plate has a bit of uneven wear or is 'polished' it will cause a bad vibration when the gear engages.

Also, I am sorry to say but if you rest your foot on the clutch, you will cause this glazing of the friction plate and you will need to stop that.

At the very least, if you are hoping that it is a warranty fix I would suggest that you don't publicise it too much.

Clutch is a brand new item.....flywheel is brand new too....the clutch (in itself) works wondefully!...no complaints.

Resting a foot on a clutch, the way I do, will not cause damage, (I don't 'ride' the clutch)....(please, let's move away from this aspect).

I just can't fit my big foot onto that footrest; also the clutch actuator lever is bent at right angles, and in a way that impedes my foot fitting onto the footrest.

Anyway, I will dismiss that as a problem, as all these componenets are new...(haven't had the chance to glaze!)..I'll review that again in the future, when I work this initial noise out....

(the reason that I mentioned 'foot on clutch'/'hand-on gear stick' was to establish and convey to you all this noise/vibration/oscillation that is proportional to engine rpm (as in prior post(s))...please don't take that as being the issue, but rather as the explanation.)

I simply don't understand your last sentence there Stephen....everything is above board, simply looking for some support and maybe helping people who may in future find this issue....I'm lucky that I have warranty....(maybe I've missed a legality or something mate?)

Cheers....really appreciating this renewed feed-back!

If it is all new, has it bed in yet?

Perhaps your clutch pack is out of balance.

As for 'moving away' no problems if you are happy with what you do. Clutch clearances are very minimal though.

What flywheel did you go with?

If you've gone factory then it shouldn't be related. If it's aftermarket could be a different feeling your getting due to the flywheel. The stock item is a dual mass flywheel which dampens, noise, vibrations etc etc. A lot of aftermarket items, actually pretty much all, are not dual mass and so you might be feeling this, rather than what was the prob before.

When i changed my clutch it definitely was the case, but i knew it would happen before i did it so no real surprise.

Hi Nis,

Ima gunna ring Frank...get the specifics, as per your question on the flywheel.

I just don't like it feeling so cheap and clanky, mainly on gentle take off...!..I'll get back to you!....

I get a fair amount of vibration through the driveline in the Z33. I can't say I feel any specific pulsing, but it does make a noise.

evo magazine recently published a 350Z buying guide online. The site's down right now, but I am pretty sure the checkpoints say something about a noisy driveline as well. Have a look later.

With shared componentry, I can't see your car being immune to it either.

Heeey!..Thankyou!

That's a great write up!..enjoyed reading that, and it did actually make me feel a little better, and more informed of this 'issue' of driveline...(or non-issue rather).

I saw Tony at TGS today,..once I get it back from the spray painter's we're taking it on the freeway, where I found the higher RPM issue/sounds...then we'll put around (slowly) and figure out the pulsing noise in first gear take off.

It could be all normal...there might be something amiss...we'll see.

my driveline has no noise only when cold you can hear a like a bearing noise... but once it warms up it goes away.

however there is NVH which i can feel through the shifter and the gear pedal however i consider it to be normal

Hi BLISTC!

NVH?.......please explain?

Is this noise/vibration heard/felt via your stick/pedal directly proportional to your engine RPM? ...or again, is it just the typical 'bearing' sound?

Cheers!

I think what BLISTC was saying is that there is NVH (Presumably Slight) that is felt "through the shifter and the gear pedal however" he considers "it to be normal"

Hi Stephen....

lol..my fault...I meant to say...."what does NVH mean???"....lol!

Is it some form of 'harmonic'/vibration description?

Oh, I thought you knew... you were so close with this response that I ignored the "please explain" response.

NVH means

Noise Vibration and Harshness...

mainly to do with most things that are engineered, especially Cars.

    • My take on gg2 48mm, 54mm, 58mm, and 62mm compressor map for same size compressor vs gg1 : All gg2 only outflow gg1 above 20 psi. As all g gen 2 surge line at lower left of comp map move to the right, all gg2 sacrifice spool vs same size gg1, surge line move to the right worst for 54mm gg2. So for same size compressor if you want best response, use gg1, if you want max hp at >20psi use gg2 but you will be laggier vs same size gg1. Max compressor efficiency drops to max 75% on all gg2 vs max 76%-80% of same size gg1. Iirc lower efficiency means hotter iat less dense air so lower hp at same operating point of comp map. Also curious why gg2 is mapped to lower max rpm vs same size gg1 (only 48mm size both gg1 gg2 mapped to same rpm) : 54mm gg1 165,000 rpm  vs  gg2 160,000 rpm. 58mm gg1 150,000 rpm vs gg2 140,000rpm. 62mm gg1 145,000 rpm vs gg2 140,000 rpm. If gg2 can safely spin to gg1 rpm then they can flow a bit more than as mapped. Good thing that all gg 2 interchange compressor and turbine housings with same size gg 1. So gg1 owners can buy gg2 chra only if planning to boost >20psi.
    • My stuff is all with Shannon's, granted, I don't really have imports I'm driving on the road, however, I've had multiple cars at the same time with them. Presently we have the Landcruiser on laid up cover, Sarah's Kluger on full cover, and the house insured. About 18 months ago Sarah wrote her Subaru Liberty GTB off, insured with Shannon's, and the payout, and buy back of the wreck was super quick. In 2020 we had the VF Commodore totalled in a major hailstorm. Storm was on the Saturday, I called on the Sunday and lodged it, vehicle was towed on Tuesday night, assessment team called on Wednesday to say it was a total loss and get payout details, money was in the bank on Thursday morning. Have had a few other claims both at fault, and not at fault, over the years, and never had an issue with them.   Funnily enough, they're also the cheapest insurer I find for things like Sarah's Kluger.   I will say I'm less impressed dealing with them lately around "the experience", as a lot of their staff that you deal with aren't car enthusiasts. Shannon's has a much more main stream feel ever since they decided to become "big corporate", laid a heap of staff off, and then hired a bunch of non enthusiasts. At the same time they've been making a push to be less "call us and we'll personally have someone who cares help" to "hey, this computer can do stuff for you" and are trying to get more square pegs to fit round holes. (That's just the vibe I get from them). Again, have had no issues with claims with them, but get a bit of a "less personal" feel from them.
    • A thing I wasn’t happy with with enthusiast was during the initial phone call they told me they’d insure it for 130k but needed photos.   I then sent them photos and they told me $80k as there were other cars either similar modifications available for around that price, I told them to send me the links to said cars so that I can buy them. i then sent the modification list with prices of the parts (no labor) and the price then came to 115k, which is still shy of the 130 that was agreed in the initial phone call
    • Ask me a bit later this week before payday
    • I agree that delayed payment probably isn't the most suitable solution. It seems a solid complete transaction would be best. As I wouldn't be using this sale as a line of credit that would typically earn interest, we can probably arrange a much cleaner single transaction deal. I can do $92.52 today. Would you prefer EFT, or Cash on Pickup?  😛
