Ive been looking around for a skyline atm, heard different stories from people about how costly they are to run? if im not drifting dragging etc, i dont imagine itd be more then the normal car just for little things needing replacing here and there? or am i wrong?

Get a tidy low K's Skyline and it wont be expensive to maintain.

Get a High K sh*tbox that has had the Ass Caned out of it and watch your cash vanish into thin air. They are fairly robust things but Any car whether it be a skyline or a ferrari can be a lemon.

Yes and no. They are getting a bit old now so things like bushes etc are gonna need to start being replaced, other than that I haven't had an issue with mine. Same as any other old car. Fuels the biggest one, its not too bad usually about 10.5L/100km unless your heavy on the go pedal then it can fluctuate as high as 13L/100km

Bought R32 GTST straight out of compliance, about 7 years ago.

Regular mtnce ( inc things like Spark Plugs / Timing belt ). Accessory type trouble only, like radio and some air-con probs.

Could'nt ask for better trouble free motoring.

I don't thrash it, and I don't nurse it.

all depends on the cars service history and what its going to be driven like with its future owner!

Word of advice, if you buy one 'dont boost it up' cause they last longer like Jax said

i had no problems until some nub tuner boosted mine up, pretty much died in a month

Ive had mine 4 years and all ive had is a hole in a clutch line. the car is coming onto 15 years old now and still in excellent condition. like to see how a 15 year old commo or ford looks.

I replaced my clutch with a HD item and subsequently had the clutch pedal bracket snap, so replaced that.

Now I'm looking at replacing front CV joints and my bushes. Other than that no problems with it.

They really aren't that bad until you modify it, if oyu don't do the supporting mods then things will start to fail.

lol as high as 13/100kms .. I WISH. My r34 GTT drinks 16.5l/100Kms in city driving and that's not racing or being an idiot ..remapped ecu so its not running rich either. Original O2 sensor but its not showing any error codes - oh yea BP Ultimate only.

I got my 34 gtt and it had low Ks and was stock completely .. and Im starting to think it was a lemon, spent more than 2-3k in repairs alone in less than a year and now I've got whining/feedback through my steering wheel accompanied with loud scraping when I turn the sterring wheel... f**king getting tired of it.

Had my skyline for about just over a year now (bought it back ~ Dec 07), bought it as a stock one & I left it pretty much stock & had no problems with it other than the problems that it had when I bought it which was a broken A/C & cigarette lighter not working.

& I didn't really give it any special treatments, just do the standard service every 5000km & had the major one done @ 100,000km. Oh & I wash it occasionally when I can remember.

Fuel wise it seem to stay around 13 - 15L/100km but thats mainly city driving with alot of short trips & getting stuck in traffic @ peak times :D

I have had my modified GTT for 2 years imported myself, had mods in Japan very tasteful and the guy seemed to look after it well. I have always given all my cars what for :( but i am very anal about servicing and i have never had a problem with any of them, it all come to maintanence and the right quality for the car and you wont have a problem.... Also get the right tunner to tune it if you want to power it up a little, i run 14psi off the stock turbo and never had a noise or problem...

I ran my R32 GTSt for over a year with an untuned 250rwhp, only issue I had was on the way home from a cruise one day I snapped the clutch fork pivot >.<

Was super fun, went hard and took a LOT of punishment.

Then I decided to get a little more serious :(

They are as good as any car.

The owners both present and past determine reliabillity.

What you do to the car , how you drive it

I would normally get 10L or better per 100km out of the old R33 gtst and similar with the R32 Gtst and R32 GTR's.

The tune and type of mods you do effect things, like any car.

Things like not going for super heavy sprung pressure plates in the case of clutches in R32's will prevent braking pedals etc..

There is plenty of good info on the forum about it all

If you are thinking you want to race and modify any car, then just throw your dreams of reliabillity into a nearby bin.

Well considering the stock GTT turbo is rated at 12.5psi MAX I'd say you either have a highflowed turbo or a non stock turbo or a BLOWN turbo and you don't even know it ;-) I'm yet to hear of anyone running more than 12psi on a stock gtt (non-hiflowed) for more than a little while without blowing it.

    • Very decent bit of kit. Definitely black it out I reckon.  
    • Because people who want that are buying euros. The people with the money to buy the aftermarket heads and blocks aren’t interested in efficiency or making -7 power, they’re making well over 1,000hp and pretty much only drive them at full throttle  best way to way make money is know your customer base and what they want and don’t spend money making things they don’t want. 
    • It's not, but it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity regardless. For example, what if the cylinder head was redesigned to fit a GDI fuel system? It's worth like two full points of compression ratio when looking at modern GDI turbo vs PFI turbo. I'm pretty reliably surprised at how much less turbo it takes to make similar power out of a modern engine vs something like an RB26. Something with roughly the same dimensions as a -7 on an S55 is making absolutely silly power numbers compared to an RB26. I know there's a ton of power loss from things like high tension rings, high viscosity oil, clutch fan, AWD standby loss, etc but it's something like 700 whp in an F80 M3 vs 400 whp in an R33 GTR. The stock TF035HL4W turbos in an F80 M3 are really rather dinky little things and that's enough to get 400 whp at 18 psi. This just seems unwise no? I thought the general approach is if you aren't knock limited the MFB50 should be held constant through the RPM range. So more timing with RPM, but less timing with more cylinder filling. A VE-based table should accordingly inverse the VE curve of the engine.
    • I've seen tunes from big name workshops with cars making in excess of 700kW and one thing that stood out to me, is that noone is bothering with torque management. Everyone is throwing in as much timing as the motor can take for a pull. Sure that yields pretty numbers on a dyno, but it's not keeping these motors together for more than a few squirts down the straight without blowing coolant or head gaskets. If tuners, paid a bit more attention and took timing out in the mid range, managed boost a bit better, you'll probably see less motors grenading. Not to name names, or anything like that, but I've seen a tune, from a pretty wild GT-R from a big name tuner and I was but perplexed on the amount of timing jammed into it. You would have expected a quite a bit less timing at peak torque versus near the limiter, but there was literally 3 degrees of difference. Sure you want to make as much as possible throughout the RPM range, but why? At the expense of blowing motors? Anyhow I think we've gone off topic enough once again lol.
    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power
