Whats fun & whats too fast

Driving home today i thought about how i drive my car day to day.

Now my car is not going to reset any land speed records, but as far as a spirited drive is concerned i would rate my old SR20 Pulsar as more fun then my GTSt.

If i use the revs in 2nd then into 3rd, your going quicker then all other traffic and exceeding speed limits by a pretty expensive margin.

Then corners, cool you can use the brakes, row back thru the gears, but then unless your carrying plenty of corner speed, the torque or throttle response isnt there to get out of the corners.

Now the old girl with the SR20. You could row it along using plenty of revs and you really werent going that fast but it felt it. Then row back thru the gears, then out of corners with good throttle response.

It seems the quicker and more powerful your car is the less you can enjoy the sporting nature of the car safely and legally on the street. I use to have a ball in my old Handivan, reving it out and giving it a tweak just to keep up with traffic.

If i was to try and have as much fun in my GTSt i wouldnt last 5 minutes without having done something stupid and very illegal. It seems if you want to enjoy it on public roads you have to forget about being a saint.

My car is way more enjoyable then any ive ever had, and not just by the speed factor. If u think ur old pulsar is more fun i would recommend that u ditch the skyline for it.....

This 100% true.

If I'm taking the car over say 4,000-5,000rpm in every gear I'm already 25+ over the limit.

To keep under the limit you have to shift DAMN early.

The bottom line is that most RB powered cars have too much power and revs for our 50km/h streets.

Skylines don't feel fast. Run it to 7,000 - 7,500 rpm and you're due for a 6 month license suspension.

Yeh but what happens when i take the car to a track and i own a Pulsar...id better take the picnic basket with me too.

I enjoy putting around in my GTSt, i have to i do around 800-1,000kms a week. Its just that its not uncommon for me to get somewhere and hit the recall on the AVCR and see eg. 3,800rpm and 0.35bar.

Its nice/enjoyable to drive, but its not entertaining.

Maybe i am just weird:(

had the same thing in my old lancer, that was challenging to get it to go fast, taught me heaps about driving fast and handling (mainly cause it didn't)...

Give the man a cigar, i would have got there 6000 words later.

Same reason my old R31 GTSX was so much fun, had piss poor brakes, the previous owner wanted it as a cruiser so it scraped door handles around corners with its wallowy suspension, but it had some poke. It was entertaining because it was scary without going that fast.

I suggest you guys buy yourselves a Daiwoo Lanos and have fun pretending to drive fast around town. When you understand that racing around suburban streets is not a good idea in any car and possibly you gain some understanding of why people buy high performance cars that cannot be let loose anywhere in Aus (except possibly the NT) You can come back and enjoy a Skyline for what it is or if you have the bread a Ferrari, M3, Lambo or even Mclaran.

51jay, i dont know if you are a grumpy old man, but i think you actually helped our statements!! it's not about "racing around suburban streets" its about what those SLOW cars have to do, to keep up!!

I've been there had the shitter, now got a skyline!! and i enjoy it, but after losing my licence for speeding, when this "high performance car" is made for going fast, i have to consider that the thrill of being able to take what it is your driving to it's limits, and doing it well, that is half the fun!!!!!!! Ask Duncan, hes driving the daewoo's cup, is that because he doesn't understand why people buy high performance cars?

so move past the whole boy racer thing, terrorising the city streets, and thinkn about a complete driving experience!!

FWD cars are fun because they are generally small and "nippy" and don't bite back. Skylines require lots more road and runoff area to enjoy them to their fullest... But their is no way a Pulsar is more fun than a Skyline...

Swinging small cars fast around corners is alot more fun than doing the same with a big car. I enjoy talking my gfriends mazda sp20 so a squirt every now and then, its feels fast but isent!!

strutto, the point i was trying to make was not about control, but that pushing a shitter to it's limit on the street is less likely to land us without a licence and a huge fine since the speeds would be so much different! I love the way the power of my skyline has saved me in multiple situations, allowing to get out of situations that the old shitter would have been totalled in! i woldn't trade her for anything less, BUT we were talking about spirited drives

The Lada can be nailing 5000rpm in 2nd and still be doing 40km/h

lol, you've all got it the wrong way round! You want a crappy daewoo to race and a skyline as a daily driver...

Afterall, the fun in racing is the competition, the relative performance is what matters, not the absolute speed

As for the skyline on the road, maybe the problem for some of you guys is that the car's performance becomes less accessible when you start modding it. Really, a GTST goes fine for carving up traffic just the way that Mr Nissan delivered it...

You've got to ask yourself what you want from your street car - I want something comfortable (ac, cd player etc) to drive every day that *can* zoom pretty much anything else when it needs to.

Not that i expect anyone to believe me, but i am pretty darn sedate when i drive... 27 years of age and have never been booked for anything.

So im either very lucky or i dont play around on the street, and its the latter.

And its not about racing around, its just line INASNT said about his gf's SP20, when you have less power, or like my friends Swift Capuccino you can row thru the gears using revs, downchanging for corners with a blip, its all innocent fun. You physically floor it in the lower gears to get to the posted speed limit. Im not talking about sideways tyres screeching stuff, or even cornering at speeds higher then other road users

51jay i enjoy my Skyline as i drive the wheels of the thing at Wakefield and EC when the opportunity arises.

I respect ppl for driving whatever car they want, hey its their coin... but as for driving (pressing pedals and turning wheels) a high performace car that cant be let loose anywhere in Australia?

To me that means you derive all your satisfaction from owning, sitting in, washing or the look of the car which is all perfectly fine. I hate washing the car, and sure it looks ok, but ive owned a brown Sigma and Valiant, and a red Handivan so looks arent that big a deal to me. I enjoy driving, whether it be the work Rodeo or my Skyline.

You talk of Porsches/Skylines etc, I think its a shame that they never get out of 3rd gear or revs over 3800rpm on the street.

The Daewoos look fun, with the price of R32 GTSt (with Road/race rego) SAU should start up a one make R32 race series... where do i sign up.

mmm, skylines racing, that's what I'll be doing next year. There's already 1 running in combined tourers in NSW and there will be up to 5 by next season almost is one make racing.....

The point I was trying to make was, as Jay said, racing around suburban streets is not a good idea in any car.

But I agree that the consequences you may find yourself in on the road are usually going to be far better in a shitter than a skyline....

I have also been in situations where the power and handling of the skyline have saved my butt.

Pfft, my shitter eats WRX's for breakfast anyway....
