jakez88
hey guys this has been going on for a while and i really just want to know what the symptoms sound like to you guys. there might be 2 problems but anyway tell me what you think. - power will cut out totally and come back on after 1-2 seconds usually when car is running but some times power cuts out during idle and stalls. - when power cuts out the car will still be on but just no power at all when stepping on accelerator. - doesn't matter if car is warm or cold. - will happen once or twice during say a 30min drive. - car doesn't idle rough at all. will stay at 1000rpms when cold then go down to just above 900. - car doesn't blow out any smoke and if anything the car feels very healthy apart from the power cut out issue. - imagine driving off from a traffic light accelerating fast then all of a sudden acceleration will completely shut off and then will jump back on. i literally get thrown around in the car. very annoying. now i haven't done much to diagnose but i have changed sparks, cleaned air flow meter out, cleaned and siliconed coil packs just in case there is a leak, cleaned aac valve and changed fuel filter. doing this made the car run heaps better but hasen't got rid of the prob. will be getting new stock coil packs this week to see if that will change anything. also while idling the car will tend to how should i say... "pop" silently as i can hear from the exhaust. is this another prob altogether? now my questions is what do you guys think is causing this? does it sound like a spark prob? fuel prob? timing prob? air prob? electrical prob? some one suggested that it might be the fuel pump but it primes up fine everytime. could be a bad ground somewhere? i really wanna get it checked out but i don't know who to take it to that will not rip me off or tell me to get things that wont fix the prob. can someone in westside, victoria recommend me a place that know alot about skylines to check over the car? otherwise help is appreciated. thanks! MrStabby
I'd guess electrical. Might be worth getting someone with CONSULT to check if there's any errors on the ECU. Probably less likely to be one of the coils/plugs as you would expect it to run rough if that was the prob, not die completely. yogi000
hey mate, i've had a similar problem with an r32 gtst turned out to be the alarm, would randomly cut the ignition to the engine. Left me stranded a few times. it was a brant alarm. hopefully that helps Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/257470-r32-gtst-power-cut-out-issue/#findComment-4440973 Share on other sites

verger
I have a similar problem with my car (same as yours - even the same colour!) where it will cut out, even when just cruising, out of no where. Somtimes all that's needed is to step off the gas pedal and then press it again, sometimes even after stepping off it and then pressing it again it would just cut out again - if you keep tapping the gas pedal (with the foot on the clutch or in neutral), it will climb the revs (provided you keep tapping it) and eventually it will get to high enough revs (about 7k) and it'll sort itself out again. Sometimes i need to pull over and give my air flow meter a few taps or a shake to get it sorted. So my issue it the Air flow meter. The next time you reproduce the problem, if it stays long enough, pull over and give the AFM a shake. If it sorts itself out after doing that (it may even stall whilst you're doing it, in which case you'd just start the car again and it'll be fine) then you know that's the problem. let me know how you go, i'm curious to see if i'm not the only one with this issue. Good luck! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/257470-r32-gtst-power-cut-out-issue/#findComment-4469214 Share on other sites

Hi Jake, I'm actually going through the exact same symptoms with my R32 GTS (non turbo).....only started a few days ago but it's now progressed to the stage where I don't feel comfortable driving it without the risk of damaging something. I initially though the culprit was some dodgy fuel but after a little bit of tinkering and replacing the fuel filter too I'm starting to think it might be electrical. I'll be taking my car to an auto electrician tomorrow morning to eliminate the electrical side of things before I start blowing money on a new fuel pump etc, hopefully they can shed some light on the issue I'll let you know how I go, Best of luck with the car. barnoon
Just thought id also post in here that my R32 GTST was doing the exact same thing, turned out to be my AFM also, replaced it with a Z32 one and all has been fine ever since. predator
Could also be a fuel pump - has it been replaced? Maybe it would be a good time to do it if it is the original one. Sean'O
Hey everyone, Thought I would post up my results. Did a little bit more investigating into the issue by taking out the car's computer and doing a diagnostic check, came back with an "error 12 - Air flow meter". Just to be sure I wasn't wasting my money I decided to give the AFM a good clean before I got the unit replaced so I went out to good old' Dick Smith and picked up a can of CRC contact cleaner --> Then I took the AFM out of the car, cleaned the "heated wire" element thing inside and also cleaned all the contact points for the wires. After drying I put the AFM back into the car and it's running fantastic, no sputters, no loss of power etc. Very happy with the result and no replacement of the AFM was required. My best guess would be just a dirty connection on the AFM Just wanted to thank everyone for their input , Best Regards, Stu Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/257470-r32-gtst-power-cut-out-issue/#findComment-4506306 Share on other sites

PUDZ 32R
same thing happening to mine. cleaned afm and it fixed it but it still happens so now i figured it out to be a dodgy plug connection on the afm.slowly vibrates loose then i pull over and tap it and it works fine,, thinking im gunna hav2 hard solder the wires to the afm.....
