Don't they WRECK them in Adelaide?????

If you want I could organise a gearbox & I have a pedal box spare.

All the ancilliary bits would come from the gearbox source.

Cheers!  :ghost:

Found one Datsun wrecker in Adelaide on the Net, they said that they had them, tried contacting them, but got no reply.

Would i need to change the gearbox crossmember and drive shaft too? is the clutch hydraulic or cable? and what about diff ratio's?

Do you have, or could you get a rear disk set up? just the lower control arms, disks and calipers of an aussie hatch would be good.

Might have to get in touch regarding the gearbox.

Cheers, Mick.

And remember when you cut the hole in the top of the airbox, your gunna suck in sh!t loads of HOT engine bay air. Great for performance as heat KILLS HP.

Yeah, i forgot to mention that i still have the cold air induction. Still even though the extra air is under bonnet air, the origional cold air snorkel is hell restrictive. and it did make an improvement. Anyhow, there is pretty good airflow getting in from under the headlight, this would keep inlet temps down.

yeah mick, with the exhaust i got rid of those 2 90degree turns and had a new cut out of the left hand side, and still looks good. I  did not get extractors just 2 1/2 " throughout. There was a noticable power increase and there  is a higher top speed.

Thanks to everyone for your corrections, I will update the website pretty soon. Feel free to keep commenting.

Cheers

Josh

Hmmm............ IM not to sure about cuting a new hole, id prefer the exhaust to still exit through the original cut out, cos i think having the cutout there, but no exhaust would look a bit odd.

Are you aware that the 2 x 90 degree bends and subsequently the exhaust outlet being on the driver's side, is a result of Australian only, bureaucratic bullshit about protecting the pedestrian from exhaust emissions.

The Japanese car had the exhaust outlet on the left, directly out from the silencer.

GODDAMMED BURECRATIC POLITICAL CRAP!!! they have ruined the Aussie R30's Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!.....ohh well, what side is the exhaust manufod on an RB20DET? im considering a conversion in the near future. Maybe just buy a jap imported DR30 or something.

Hey Josh,

I dont know of any R30's that had a live axel rear end, they were all made in Japan.and L24's have been around since the 60's i think, in 240z and 240c's.

Ohh yeah, you want yours to go better, cut a big hole in the top of your airbox.  makes a notable improvement, and sounds totaly nuts....hmmmm.induction noises.

Ohh yeah, can anyone tell me what sort of diff is standard in the MR30 Ti?  mine seems to spin both wheels sometimes, but mostly only single spinners. non LSD diffs can still spin both wheels in conditions cant they?

And does anyone know of the Paul Newman for sale at the moment, i saw it in the trading post, and i want to know more about it.

Also, if anyone has a manual MR30 that they re wrecking, i want a manual box, and all the gear necicary for a conversion from auto (Pedal assy. etc.) and a disk brake rear out of a hatch.

Cheers, Mick.

Hey Mick,

I 've still got the five speed manual out of my MR30 TI Sedan if you are still that way inclined. Along with a complete engine that i cant give away.

Just a quick question probably for ghostrider, which model R30's came with disk brakes on the rear. And did we ever find out if you can fit the front struts off the 180 (i think that was the model)....

Are you for real???????

At 90! I'm surprised you can drive a performance car at all.

ha! gottcha. no only late 30's but i feel like 90. owned too many cars lost too much money and wife's. but hey gotta keep doing something or the reaper gets ya! but seriously got import '84 gt L20t sedan and need to up the ante on the old girl. never seen any like her. ps my GT has rear disc's and a rear wiper.

Where are you first?

What state?

Cause the easiest way is change the motor, I have an 84 MR30 Hatch that I am putting all my PNV turbo bits onto.

Makes then an L24ET (turbo) then goes about as quick as a stock CA18DET 180SX.

In Australia, ALL hatches had disc brake rear ends.

As for front struts? My guess is R31's as they look very similar and are shorter by about 42 mm for lowering, What may be different, is the steering link mount, but I think the R31 could be used.

Coilovers??? I don't know, Crimmo is the man that has done the S13 conversion, I was lucky enough to pick up a genuine set of JIC coilovers off an R30, from Japan.

Making your own isn't that difficult with the kits available from Whiteline or Noltec.

Remember our Aussie R31 was another bureaucratic bullshit deal, to have a higher Aust content, hence the live rear axle etc.

Mick,

RB20.25/26/30, exhaust all same side as L24. Left or near side to kerb.

As for exhaust outlet point in body, I am cutting a section from the rear beaver panel and tack welding it into the old outlet point and filling/finishing with body filler.

Then cut new outlet on left side, but would have to do something to eliminate the sharp edge, like a moulding or similar trim idea.

You got me lost now, have never done the Auto to Manual conversion, but I think the manual crossmember is different but mounts to same position, would normally come with gearbox I would think, particularly if stating for conversion purposes. Driveshafts, not sure would have to check, but I have about 3 or 4 & diffs all same, R180 3.9:1 open type.

Clutch is hydraulic & handbrake cables are required as well.

Your right about wreckers in SA, I found 1, River Murray Auto Wreckers at Barniera SA, 8588 2445, online at www.partslocator.com.au and they have an 83 auto hatch, is this same place you found?

MR30's are a dime a dozen up here in Sydney, just let me know what you need and I will organise to get it for a small labour fee. I have a few older retired type mates that are more than keen to help, for a little top up to their pensions. One changed a water pump on an N13 pulsar the other day for a friend, and his labour was $30.00. helps pay for their smokes etc. very reasonable deal, I think.

Cheers,

Hey Bruce,

Only as old as the woman you feel!!!!

Shane, yeah thats what I want to do, but every time I try to ask people about that they don't know wtf I'm talking about or if its even possible... As I see it, as long as the ECU worked with the standard sensors you'd just need to make a fly lead that went between the standard loom and the new ecu

Adam : that was Don's idea from Whippet performance, i said i wanted to be able to swap it back to the stock ecu and airflow meter pretty easily, and he suggested that..Sounds pretty good to me...He quoted me 3k to supply install and tune an EMS 8860, fit my injectors and fit/wire my fuel pump up...Not bad price i didn't think :)

You can't be serious about that exhuast story from the government???

hmm i think its weird how my 83 and 84 model bluebirds both made in australia have the zorst on the left, yet my 82 and my mates 84 skylines had them on the right

like it matters what pedestrians do they are the ones that aren't drivin!!!!!

and my motto is: 'if your not burning petrol your not having fun, and the more petrol you burn the more fun you have!'

Nah, i found a link on a datsun site, www.grandautowreckers.com they had something saying that they were wrecking r30's. i wrote to them, they replied saying that they do have a manual. I tried to get more info, and they havent replied. I like youre idea, and i have no problems with paying your mate's some labour. Although, im now thinking that it might be a better idea, if i buy a complete car (Manual) and do the conversion as straight swap. then i can see what needs to be done, and will have all the necicary parts on hand.

You said that you are planning on putting the Paul Newman bits into your hatch, what are your plans for the wagon when your done? what happened to the PNV?

You said that you are planning on putting the Paul Newman bits into your hatch, what are your plans for the wagon when your done? what happened to the PNV?

The PN bits going into the hatch is just the turbo induction/exhaust systems, and ECU & loom. I have bought a T3 off an FJ20DET that's also going on in place of the L20ET turbo, as the exhaust housing is nearly double the size. The induction system already has some type of adjustable boost valve in it that will be transferred.

It will then become an L24ET all legit, engineered etc, and full Ti spec, incl 2 way power sunroof.

In addition, 40mm lowered 200 lb/in custom (Jumboz) rear springs, 50mm lowered

240/250 lb/in custom (Jumboz) front springs, 24mm (Selby/Whiteline) front sway bar, new adjustable Koni's all round. Probably include Z32 front seats with all electric, fully adjustable driver's seat, /, /, <, >, /. Short shifter (throw length 20mm shorter) 2.5 inch exhaust system. SAAS sports steering wheel, imported Hot Plate tail lights

The package will include a type 1 BOV, but won't be fitted. It will be on the market registered for about $4000.00. Will be sold with current dyno graphs, spare tail gate/hatch, and some other spares. No intercooler! but I expect it to have about 140/150Kw

Colour: Red with grey interior, they never came this way in Oz, were all red with brown interior.

Hmmm. import taillights. i like the sounds of that car. How hard do you think it would be to get that registered in SA? would it just be a straight forward rego swap? NSW to SA? how far from completion is it? im looking at buying another car around June-July (Tax return). please keep me informed about the hatch because im interested.

Is the hatch the same wheelbase as the Sedan? would it weight much more?

Whats happening to your Paul Newman skyline?

Ohh. and will the hatch have an LSD?

What condition is the body in?

Tried Nissmaz or Niswreck yet?

I know Nissmaz had a couple of R30's there a few months ago because I got some bits off them.

Glynde Auto Wreckers also had an R30

Cheers for the tips, havent tried them yet, im sort of thinking about leaving my car auto for now, and saving up for another one.

    • So where is this message group so we can organise another meet? Keen to come along and catchup. Might eventually be in a skyline again next year, but the Mustang will have to do for now. Also need to get the WRX back on the road. Stupid f**king money pit that thing is.
    • Stock equivalent turbo replacement is a bit of a nightmare. The old Hitachi ceramic things were pretty good for their time, but they have primitive, vintage aerodynamics. The only thing they have going for them is a light turbine**, and there are plenty of other light turbine options these days, in both materials and CNC manufacturing methods. So, the old stocker makes absolutely no power at all compared to its physical size and its (not very low) boost threshold and response. ** and the ONLY thing that was good about the ceramic turbine was that it was light. In all other respects it is a nightmare. To get a turbo that is anywhere near equivalent in terms of power capacity (ie, to avoid it being "bigger" and needing tuning/fuelling/etc) you have to physically downsize. And that is not a "stockish" replacement. Doesn't just fit where the old one did. At least a frame size down, probably need a new dump, probably need new inlet and outlet piping made on the compressor side, new hose connections as D said above. I say, if you have to suffer that much work, you might as well do the same work to fit an even bigger (than stock) turbo, have more power (and hence have to do injectors, ECU, etc), and love life, instead of suffering with stock power levels. Or, you get a light highflow from someone like Hypergear. A highflow that has not been pushed too far from stock. There are still modification consequences here though. HG's cores are smaller than the massive Hitachi core, so it is shorter, moves the compressor housing backwards and requires mods to the air side piping. Plus new hoses. Looks stock, mostly fits where the stock one did (with the previous caveats mentioned), makes a bit more power but can be run at stock boost levels and not cause too many ECU problems. But, seriously. It's 2024. Like - 25 years since the R33 came out. It's time to put an ECU in it. I Nistuned my car (on RB20 ECU then later again on the Neo ECU) and it was the single best thing possible for minimal money. Dial out the R&R bullshit, fix up the fuelling and timing to make it more efficient for normal driving (cut fuel consumption by >10%). Nistune is not an option for you unless you change the ECU, so you might as well just do a standalone. it will be worth it. And then you can tune it up to the limits of the injectors and AFM, which is pushing 200rwkW and enjoy some actual squirt, instead of the lazy barge-like motion you get from a stock engine, turbo and management.
