']man car electrics are enough to drive you crazy hey .. my mate does it as a profession, well hes final year apprentice, duno how he does it every day :P

me and my old man stripped my whole dash apart, as in glovebox out, stereo, tt, EBC etc facia removed all that stuff out, steering wheel and etc removed all that taken out, and instrument panel out, oh and bottom panels out! also had to d/c boost gauge off steering column plastic!

then we ended up looking in the fuse box again. after several hours trying to work out which relays are which, after a long time we arrived at 2 left that ddint seem to do much so we swapped them over and walah! when my mate had been testing my relays on the weekend to find the Fuel Pump problem which was the original problem, he'd accidentally replaced 2 identical relays, but 1 of them happened to have been blown since i got the car (hence fuel warning light, radiotor warning lite etc didnt work but i never knew!) and he'd put it into the other spot, which meant that all my guages except speedo, and my indicators and other warning lights that used to work, werent working!!

so yeah we put the good relay back an im gonna get a new relay for my other warning lights asap!! but after all that i went inside for a drink then back out and before putting it all back together thought id test it one more time ... and the fuel pump wouldnt prime again!! which was the original problem we fixed by making a new ground wire to chassis... after more deliberating we have arrived at the battery being ****ed aswell!

shit .. hopefully a new battery and relay tomorow and im back in action! gota get me an Odyssey in preparation for my cooler install ...

damn electrics :) !

is there any chance of you taking pics of the relays you were playing with as mine are rooted?? i think and would rather do a trial and error process then take it to electrican! cheers Matt... or even if someone can get me the # for the relays as i carnt even read those?

rsx84 - hey, the relays are for FJ20ET .. im confused i thought u had an RB20 or something ? or you have more than one car? haha

yeah i couldnt read the japanese either i just used trial and error to work them out. the only one i havent yet worked out is the brown wierd one by itself. says 12v or something on it. but all the others i know they are;

As you look down on the fuse box, bottom 2 relays towards the left:

--> Bottom Left relay (Black) - Parking Lights relay

--> To the right of above relay (Blue) - Accessory relay 1

okay these are the top row of relays, working from left to right:

--> [slightly sunken below the rest] (Green) - EFI relay (first fuse below this is efi fuse too, not sure about the rest of the fuses!)

--> (Blue) - Ignition relay 1 - does radiator warning light, fuel warning light, (!) warning light, & possibly a couple of other warning lights from memory

--> (Green) - Fuel Pump relay

--> (Blue) - Ignition relay 2 - does seatbelt warning light, tachometer, boost guage, fuel guage, oil pressure guage, temperature guage, indicators [not hazards], couple of other warning lights

--> (Blue) - Main Beam relay

--> (Black) - Accessory relay 2

sorry i dont know exactly what all the relays do, i know what the two ignition relays do, simply because my Accessory Relay 1 was blown, and got put into Accessory Relay 2 position, hence all that stuff didnt work! so i know what those 2 do.

the wiring diagrams i used to sorta help were S12 Series wiring diagrams for all engine variants on the one diagram, took 6 A3 pages to print it out! its not the same, but its similar since S12s had the FJ20. more helpful than just an fj20 ECCS diagram :) !!

Boof - well, ive reassembled all the dash and shit today, done a proper ground from the pump up into the car under the rear seat, got out my dead battery, and bought a little Odyssey ($250 :D) coz i know ill need it ultimately in a month or so when i eventually get round to having my intercooler installed. but the Odyssey is much smaller so i need to modify my battery holder bracket to secure it, and i also need bigger terminals coz stock ones are too small to go over the Odyssey. so im getting the bracket sorted out tomorow, and hopefully getting some new terminals too. then it should be ready to go!! fingers ***en crossed wen i turn the key tomorow arvo i tell ya...!! haha every time i start it something else wrong lately so im not getting my hopes up for tomorow though :(

found out my exams on friday not tomorow (thurs) after all so give me and extra day to try and fix the stoopid car! haha

no no just the one r30 now, its just my problem is with the headlights, indocators and wipers they dont work!! i've changed the control unit twice, nothing, so the next step is the relays? which should be the same for all r30 models??

Does anyone know what thread the DR30 gearbox drain plugs are?

I've rounded both of mine and will need to use the oxy to get them out, and I need to do the oil in the box, but I dont want to take mine out until I have replacements. I've spent the morning trying to find something with similar dimensions but cant find anything

yeah true the relays are probably teh same. though i couldnt find a full diagram with all relays for R30 skylines anywhere :P so im not totaly sure. but i did find an L series (aussie model R30) wiring diag for the electrical system and it has 2 accessory relays, 1 efi relay, and 1 ignition relay. and my car has 2 ignition relays .... so it may not be identical.

id say look on the net for S12 Wiring Diagram. thats what i have, its probably not identical but its very close id say. thats what greatly helped me to narrow down my problems with my car. you can see where things get power from etc, helps u trace the problem abit and see if things are related anyway! i cant give u a link for the diagram though coz my dad found and downloaded it. its a 20 meg Bitmap file!! lol but worth having id say. ive converted it to a 1.47meg jpeg so i guess i could send it or something if you need it.

have you checked all your fuses too? indicators also supply power to ur digital dash clock, so if thats off too then you may have lost that supply so it could be a fuse (from lookin at this diagram i have!)

also on this diagram, your wipers get power from accessory position, and theres a wiper relay listed, so maybe one of the accessory relays i called 1 & 2 could be for wipers. maybe try swapping those 2 relays around and see if the wipers come back with key in accessory position.

alternatively you can get a test meter thing and put it on the relays and test if the relay is blown. thats what my dad did to confirm that 1 of mine was stuffed. i guess it may be easier to get an auto eleccy to check your relays with a meter if you dont have one or know how .. may cost a bit but wouldnt be much i cant imagine! would take literally about 10mins max! you just put a positive and negative probe on 2 pins n check them.

or yeh, just try swapping the 2 accessory relays i said and see if your wipers come back!

but the indicators seems more specific, as the relay for them does all your gauges (except speedo). so if your guages work, then your relay is fine. so it wouldnt be a relay fault.

hm and as for headlamps, theres 2 headlamp relays and all sorts on this diagram, so im not too sure whats wat there haha

hiimmm the plot thickens!! dash guages work somewhat, hooked the boost guage up to run with the rb20, fuel has a mind of its own level marker goes all the way to the top then dissapears (even changed the tank) temp works fine with the rb, and the last one is the oil psi ?? and that moves but i dont know if its correct or not.. my dash clock was working but has since been unplugged, what i'll do is take of all the faces, plug anything thats not plugged in in and see if that helps? if all else fails then its a job for the sparkie...thanks for your help...the sh%tie part is these things worked befor i took the car to the sparkie to wire up the engine, he said he disconected something because the lights stayed on?? now there nolonger in business??

You need to tap in the temp sender from the fj20 (if that was your standard motor) into the rb water line to get a correct reading, you also need the oil pressure sender from the fj, it should just bolt into the rb20, i know the L series one does, and that will give you a correct reading. not sure about the fuel gauge, but if the car has been stationary for a very long time with little amount of fuel, the fuel sender unit can seize/rust slightly, and it get stuck. My dash clock also stopped after the rb20 went in, as did my fan/heater, havent worked that one out yet... :D

Thats cause the car is crying out for an FJ Crimmo :D

Hrmmm that fuel sender thingo, guessing i might whack some fuel in my tank then to keep that thing under liquid and stop it from rusing then hey!

i took the old tank out and the float was rusted something shocking so swapped that for the tank in the mr30 which was rust free (brilliant condition for a 22 year old item) plugged it up and still the same problem?? taking it to a sparkie friday week just going to get them to fix it all as this is whats stopping me from getting it on the road

list of things to do:

fuel pump on all the time when power is on!

no signal from ECU for tacho to work!

fuel guage not working!

and the headlight, indocator and windwiper problem!

then its off to the engineer to get the front seats and compliance plate then its time to pick up my new plates....

haha shit thats a fair few problems, probably is best to take to auto ellecy i spose! fuel pump on all the time's a bit dodgey! needs to go via the relay and then to the ECU coz ECU sends it a pulse to click the relay and prime it in the Ignition position then click off again after the timed period. then starts proper wen car is turned on. so it seems yours is wired straight to power and bypassing the ecu n relay or something! :D

yeah hey too many RB20s in here! ill stick to my FJ :) shes all good now. all the electrics work, brand new odyssey battery is in, malpassi has a nice bracket to hold it in place, replaced my broken relay for $10 from a wrecker ..! so i gave the car the full clean inside and out today, plus red turtle wax polished the whole body, and put bumper black bootpolish type stuff on the bumpers so theyre nice n black again! comes up a treat when i go to the effort of doing all that with it. thought it deserved it for getting back working in time for today for my first Exam ! haha

the guy at the wrecker didnt even know what an FJ was. he goes wats that in there? i said FJ20 he goes what? i said FJ20, stock engine. hes like ah right noone has them they all take em out and put in rb25s .. or 26s. but i said nah im staying FJ then he started saying i should twin turbo it coz it has enough room there .. reminded me of that one you saw over east rsx84. needa get some pics of that thing yet! haha

Hahaha yes well i went to motormate (like a repco store over here as well) and asked them for an oil filter for an FJ20 DR30 and they tried to tell me (after i got a very puzzled look) that my car has the same motor as the MR30 and the book is right and im wrong??? Guess i didn't get an oil filter from them that day hey...

Big props go to Dennis (ghostrider) for the parts, mint as mate cheers for your assitance!!

I always get "Duh.... whats a FJ20, is that the 2.4 litre from the '84 Skylines?"

Just got back from the ANTRX dyno day at Blackwood Dyno Tune... 123.4kw atw at stock boost with 3 inch cat back and a HKS pod. S14 running 14psi got 150, and a 180SX with a SR20DET got 113kw. Sweeeeeeeeeeet I beat one of them :) AFR wasn't too bad either, went from mid 11's to 10.7 at about 120kmh (dyno speed, probably about 7000rpm?) then spiked up to 12.0 at the end of the graph

I'm pretty happy. I'll scan the graph later. A Mini got 25kw... I made 5 times what he did heeheehee

    • Well.... it's not just "de-oxygenating". If you do that you just have, most likely, ethane. So you still need to do a synthesis step to combine a number of ethanes/ethanols to make circa-8-chain hydrocarbons. And of course you don't want straight chain HCs, because n-octane actually has a negative octane rating (ie, it's worse even than the n-heptane which sets the zero on the octane scale!), so you have to do some tricky catalytic chemistry to synthesise branched HCs. That's all doable - but it doesn't come for free. And.... it starts with ethanol, which is an agricultural product, and there will almost certainly never be enough of that as a base stock to replace the liquid fuels that are in use. You really wouldn't want to be planning to be using any more ethanol for fuels than is currently already used (in E10, E85s, etc). And ideally you'd be looking to reduce such usage, as it is largely wasteful, particularly in the stupid-ole'US-of-A where the corn lobby has organised it so that it's actually primary production corn that is used to make a lot of the ethanol, not by-products and waste, like it is (mostly) elsewhere. So, what I said about needing free-ish energy probably still applies. True synth fuels would be made from H2 and CO2, in a near reversal of the combustion process. In fact, given that the H2 would be split from water first, it actually is a complete reversal of the combustion process. But...energy intensive. The human race burns something like 1 cubic MILE of crude oil, after it has been made into various fuels. Every year. That's a simply stupendous amount of energy. Just assume that the density is 900 kg/m3, and that the calorific value is 45 MJ/kg, then that is 165.9 x10^12 MJ of energy. Or more than 10^19 Joules. You get a maximum of 1 kJ/s per square meter solar radiation falling on the planet's surface, and so if you halve that for daylight, and halve it again for average weather (highly optimistic) and then take ~25% for the very best efficiency of solar panels, then you need about 85.7 billion square metres of solar panels to generate enough electricity to replace that liquid fuel energy consumption. Each panel is about 1m2. That's a rather large number of panels. We also burn about a cubic mile of coal. We also use hydroelectric power. We also use nuclear. We also use a number of other sources, both "renewable" and not. You can kind of ignore the renewable ones (except for hydro, because it will all end up getting subsumed into pumped hydro for storing other renewables, and so it won't be the standalone renewable that it originally was), so we end up needing a multiple of the ground area number that I just arrived at.
    • Corvette thread then? Don't say I didn't predict the future again. "I love the little MX5, I do, but I just want something a little easier to get in/out of, a little more cushy and some power would be nice - I miss the V8 Rumble... I found this clean red C5 for sale recently and..." I'll do you a great deal on the next step, which is one of those but you can fit people in it, too.
    • What about renewable diesel and/or gasoline? I see some projects spinning up like de-oxygenating ethanol to make drop-in compatible bio-gasoline especially in CA. I still think the future is EVs and we should've all gone full throttle on nuclear power after the 1973 oil crisis like France. Despite 15 years of work in CA to reduce the CO2 intensity of generation with renewables our electric grid is still far worse than even "low carbon" nuclear power. ICE is pretty cool when you aren't depending on the stupid thing to be practical and reliable and cheap as possible to get you to work every day. It's kind of like mechanical watches or vacuum tube amps.
    • I just rolled over "my" first 10k km in the MX5 Every time I go anywhere it always ends up in a adventure to look at houses and find some random country roads I've been on leave since early November but unfortunately need to go back to work on 19 January Luckily though I still have a fair chunk of leave left to burn until.... Not that I'm counting 😁
