I've had an idea to legally obtain spare parts for skylines at a reduced cost.

Basically a group of us posts a list of required parts etc

(for example: 1 person may need Bonnet, front guards etc...another may need a new motor.....someone else may need a gearbox, diff etc....)

When and if enough people are on board, we can purchase a car directly from Japan to import for dismantling for parts.

Yes we could divide the cost among us ( still paying customs duty and supporting our local warfies by providing them with our car stereos....wheel centre caps etc......:) just kidding)

Someone would need to step and offer their backyard 2 dismantle the car etc...which could be a problem.

We could all be doing this ourselves, if it wasnt for the upfront cost involved.

By dividing the cost amongst ourselves, we stand to save LOTS of money.

It may upset a lot of businesses, but it may encourage local shops to compete by lowering their markups. This would also benefit us.

Does anyone think that this idea will work?

I think the amount of time may be one of the downfalls..

But i think it's a great idea..

How would the pricing structure work. Say you only needed one

rim.. If it's evenly spread amoungst the people, someone else

maybe getting a whole engine while you on the other hand are

only getting one wheel.

I'm not saying people are going to be greedy, but i think this will

be hard to sort out?

Maybe work a percentage for each part? and maybe extra funds

go toward a BBQ between the people or something?

Could work, however the only thing is how you can distribute the cost of bringing the vehicle in. Someone might only need a front left indicator for example, how would you work out how much to charge them? either way 1 person is going to bare the brunt of the vehicle cost and be stuck with it until the parts are sold.

I must admit i have thought about it......

a damaged R33 GTST is very cheap in japan

There is also the question of left overs. What happens if one mostly dismantled car sits on someone's front/back lawn for a long time. That person will somewhat become disgrutled.

Shipping parts to all places around the country will also become expensive with small bits and pieces everywhere.

Don't get me wrong I love the idea and would probably buy bits and pieces. R31 stuff of course. It would be good to have a decent source, because its getting harder to find stuff in Adelaide. What does it cost to import a wreck anyway?

O.k. hat you could do is have a co- op type thing.

Everyone puts in X dollars, and that starts out as their base credit. Then you'd have to assign some sort of points system to parts. Say 25 points for a taillight, 1000 points for a trans or whatever, and assign a monetary value to a point unit.

The idea is that eash member starts off with a certain amount of points to their credit depending on how much they put in, and they can use up their credits on any parts they see fit.

If you go over credits, you either pay extra into the co-op or have a debt assigned to your account which you could pay off by putting forward to the next import or whatever.

As for leftover shells etc, upon agreement of the co-op, the shell could be offered in the classifieds, and proceeds are equally divided between each member's points.

Does that work? Give me a few months, and I should have a nice big yard which things could be put in. Oh yeah, members who volunteer to store things could be offered additional credits(not a huge amount), and say on a monthly basis, to compensate for their use of space, time for allowing access to the vehicle, their need to be there when leftovers are put up for sale etc?

Regards, Andrew.

    • I like it when the counter chick leads you out the back into the racks and says "have a grub around in here and see if you can find what you need. I'll be back in a few minutes. Just left me in front of a massive motorised shelving system and 2-3 million fasteners, so I could find a peculiar SS shoulder bolt with cap head. Gotta love country towns.

    • It's about the same time for me from Bunnings, or the Fasteners. My big push away from takeaway food, and gluten in general keeps me away from the Bunnings Snags too! Weather up here, I've been out for two walks today in the beautiful sunshine. Had a few little drizzles, and some wind, that honestly, a tin of beans and I could compete on how harsh she blows Thankfully, being this bit inland, we're not getting anything much really. Will probably pick up a bit more when/if Cyclone Alfie decides to come ashore. A few areas in the GC though, and south into NSW are really getting smashed though! Right now, I'm just annoyed Alfie hasn't hit, as I'm not allowed to crack into the BBQ foods like the bacon and eggs until the Cyclone hits "In case we lose power"...
    • I love fastener joints, the price difference between them and joints like Bunnings or Super Cheap is amazing, and they either have exactly what you want, or they can get it to quick They have even given me some for free when I only needed a couple of specific size In saying this, I have paid premium for fasteners from Bunnings if they have the sizes I need, but only for convenience really, as my local is only 10 minutes away, the Sushi joint near them is also a consideration  How's the weather Matt? Stay safe mate
    • Wideband is worth setting up if only for tuning purposes. I would not mess with the ignition system unless there's a misfire. HKS crank trigger is popular out here for the relatively easily sourced Denso crank sensor, not a bad idea to install as well regardless of power level on a standalone. Boost leak test is worth thinking about. Oil pressure sensor tied to a fuel cut isn't a bad idea either. Getting the tune figured out is a good idea. Without putting eyes on it and getting under it there's no way for us to tell you exactly what it needs but most likely you're down to the last 10% that will make a big, big difference in how happy you are with the car.
