Hey everyone

I was pulled over last weekend near RE customs. The copper got me for not displaying P plates and bald tyres.

On Friday i received another infringement notice stating that i was driving a highly powered vehicle. Ive had my license since 0ctober 2006, im on my green P's and i drive a 1993 r32 GTS-4. It makes 123kw per tonne this means it does not exceed the power to weight ratio which is 125kw per tonne.

I called the officer that issued the notice and told him he made a mistake. He told me to go to vicroads and get a letter from them stating that it isnt a highly powered vehicle. They said they could not write the letter because they didnt have the power figure on record.

has anyone been in this situation before? What should i do?

It's pretty funny the way things work. I don't have a definite answer but I'm guessing that because the car is turbocharged that it is still prohibited. I'm making 115kw from my NA R32, you're only making 8 more kw's but your car is probably illegal.

You shouldn't pay for the fine cos the officer is wrong, 32 GTS4 is legal for P-platers under old power to weight rule (125kw per tonne) for P-plater in Victoria that has been issued before 1st July 2007.

Get letter from Vicroads (or get the list on website) and write to someone that will review the fine you've recieved (the details are on back of the infrigment notice) stating you're contesting the fine cos it's legal for P-plater that has obtained the licence before 1st July 2007 to drive turbocharged cars within 125kw per tonne.

You just need to write the letter really well, you shouldn't have to pay the fine. How much is the fine (PM me if you prefer)?

unfortunately I think VICRoads only have an R32 GTR, R32 GTS and R32 GTSt's specs. So those are the only things you can go by.. We ran into the same brick wall when we were trying to comply an RB20E 4 door R32 that we imported... because VICRoads didn't ahve any data on them, it had to be re-engineered or modded to specs that they did have (ie remove RB20E and add RB20DE).

Worst case scenario go get a dyno readout and weight slip from an automotive engineer.

well generally im pretty sure Turbocharged vehicles are prohibited......

even though its a low powered 2.0l GTS-T old skyline, unless you can prove otherwise....

For P-platers in Victoria after obtaining their Probationary licence on 1st July 2007 it is prohibited to drive turbocharged cars the OP got his on October 2006, he is under power to weight ratio laws.

I'm pretty sure someone on this forum has the list of prohibited car list complied years ago, might be wise to ask in Victoria section of this forum or do a search.

yeah im pretty sure in NSW, the prohibited car index...the R32 GTS-t skylines were in there....

but then again as mentioned before in previous threads.....

the power to weight as well as prohibited vehicles combined are a load of crap anyways.

about every V8 car is prohibited...including 1979 Holden Kingswood V8..

but a Honda S2000 for e.g is one of the fastest N/A 4Cyls out there...

that would smoke the Kingswood like no tomorrow..... but yet its legal.

and the S2000 is known to keep up with S15 200sx... some specs on acceleration show its actually faster..but once again......its legal....

there rediculous loop holes.....

its R32 GTS4.. and i find it rediculous that they can tell you that your car is over the 125 limit but when you ask them to show you the proof.. well ... ahhh.. they dont have it..

surely if you went to court then they will need to provide evidence that it is over.. i'd take it to court and have the car dyno'd and weighed.. go in strong.. or write a letter and get it dismissed to start off with

Agreed about the 'blanket ban' it's ridiculous, for example; 34 gtr is 126kw per ton and it's banned yet Honda Integra Type R (DC2) 130 kw per ton, and it's legal for P-platers to drive (it wasn't allowed under Victorian's power to weight rule though).

Unfortunately, they don't have to prove anything. It is taken for granted they are right. You will have to prove them wrong.

Anyway, I'm trying to get hold of someone inside Nissan Australia who can get the data we need (kerb weight, engine power). Hold tight.

It's "nominally" 206kW, and everyone knows it's more than that "out of the box".

More than 206kW, in a 1.4T car -> more than 147kW/T. If the car isn't that heavy, then the number goes up.

The figures are based on factory specification sheets, which works out to be 126kw per ton according to Vicroads, it was written on the prohibited vehicles for p-platers list (someone on this forum had a copy of it can't remember who is the one with the list).

Yes I know GT-R's are more than 206kw, Vicroads use this figure to calucate the ratio.

I checked my "Certificate of Registration", which is the part of the renewal immediately below the sticker. It has an area labeled "TARE" - that's basically kerb weight. Mine says "1400". So, according to Vicroads, my R32 GTS4 weights 1.4T.

At 158kW, that means 112.86 kW/T. If that's not less than 125, I don't know what is.

but the Integra Type R's performance is no where near the R34 GT-R...........

even if the figures are set out in a way that it is.....

so thats why i put it in a different perspective.

an old Kingswood.....that was running on carby... that wouldve been SLOW as a SLOATH...

id bet a 2009' Honda Jazz would probably beat it with its V-TEC set up... let alone an S2000 or type R...

anyhow

either way..... id personally think that more than 50% green p-platers are breaking the law with a high performance car. there is just way too many

im guessing surely by now they shouldve moved on to full's by now.

and worse, ive seen a few red p'platers with WRXs etc

In the end of the day, it's up to officers discretion whether to fine you for p/w ratio or not the OP just got unlucky that he got nabbed for driving prohibited vehicle.

My comment about the Golden Rule was perhaps a bit cynical.

You are innocent until proven guilty. If you contest the charge, it is up to the police to PROVE that the car is a high-powered vehicle. If Vicroads don't have the data, then the charge cannot be proven.

Even better if you can counter their claim. Simply get the car weighed. It should cost much less than the cost of the fine.

Im going to write a letter disputing the fine then see what happens from there.

Got this picture off a friend who got it off his local cop shop.

No mention of r32's on the list...

Another option you have is to send an email to vicroads with the weight and power you have found. They will respond with a p/w calc check and at least you have it from a vicroads staff to attach onto your letter.

One time a cop told me to contact DOTARS or something? for the weight and power, so you could try that too... (i think its dotars? who approves car imports?)

    • Result of another R35GTR build. Similar specs as above except this is running our bigger size SS-2 profile option. Made similar power except this car runs on Pump 98 fuel. Build specs are: Nissan R35 GTR 2015 model stock engine and box. ETS street intercooler boost logi intercooler piping with tial bov, boost logi turbo inlet pipe ID 1050 injector DW 300C fuel pump Decatted oem down pipe and y pipe& HKS exaust 3inch intake pipe Upgraded actautors HyperGear SS-2 high flow option Final result is 639whp / 477wkws hubs, Ron 93 / P98 fuel at 20psi.  
    • Duncan:- it affect both sides.  Driver side is worse.
    • That seems like a very special issue!  Does it affect both sides? Either way, I would disconnect the driver's side switch and see if it still happens, noting that might require removal of the whole door card which is a bit of a pain (it does on V37 and HY51)

    • I currently have a 2008 370GT Coupe, with the big brakes (Akebeno if I'm correct), and Its coming time to get new pads. Previously, I had a 2003 350GT Coupe with the stock sized brakes, not Brembos. I had custom wheels on it that were pretty open to the brakes, and when I first put the wheels on it, the rims where completely coated with brake dust. A few years after adding the new rims, I needed to change to pads on that car. I didn't do any research, but I told the mechanic of the problem with the brake dust. I also told him I didn't track the car or even drive around the streets harshley. But the dust was an issue. The mechanics changed the pads to a different compound, and the dust was GONE! The other change I noted was that when coming to a complete stop, instead of having to press harder on the pedal as I approached 0kph, I had to actually lift off a little to not come to a hard jerky stop.( My unfounded explanation is they became stickier as they heated by stopping ) Since I got my 370gt with big brakes, I noticed that that as I came closer to stopping, I had to press harder and harder to reach a full stop. I am not talking about hard, just harder. I brought the car in from another state, so when I had a blue slip done, I asked the mechanic what he thought of the brakes, and he thought they were brilliant. The only negative of these pads on the 350GT, was that they squealed when cold. So driving out of a shopping center carpark, it was a little embarrassing, as the brakes squealed, and I am sure people thought that I needed new brakes, when they were actually fresh. I have no idea of what type of compound they were on the 350gt, but whatever it was, I want to get the exact same on my 370GT. They weren't ridiculously expensive, and were replaced at the local JAX (which is no longer open), so I am certain they would be a pretty common big brand, off the shelf type/brand. My current mechanic suggested I need top get the rear pads changed soonish, but he suggested standard Brembo pads. Which I expect to behave the same as the current ones and not like the ones on the 350GT.  I don't think dust will be an issue on the 370GT. With the behaviour I describe above on the 360GT, does anyone have a suggestion of pad material that will act like the change I had done on the 350GT?
