hey guys,

im sure this has been covering 100000 times but i couldnt find much in the search...if someone could point me in right direction would be great but anyway,

i keep seein these defects popping up for aftermarket BOV,

now i have a drift plumb back one (came with car when purchased), but ive heard plumb back is legal? but aftermarket bov are not? WTF

now honestly i love the noise part of the reason i brought the turbo, i dont speed but i like letting it rip in the cold morning air. now i keep seeing also people saying just get a GTR One, do these fits on 33 series 1 gts-ts? and what is the difference between that and a stock one?

and why will a cop not defect you for having a gtr one?

cheers boys & girls

its always "apparantly" it shits me, this just shows how grey the rules are...if they wana defect us for things then tell us so we can change them before things go on, last i heard u cannot have a bov if it is atmospheric, plumb back however goes back into the car so its ok...now im hearing, its completely illegal, im considering calling around to a few policemen, preferably highway patrol and asking them. get a few different opinions, if they have the time of course, bcuz as we know there are alot of dickheads out there doing the wrong thing, problem is i respect the law and happy to abide by it if i see the rules written down, then i can go "ok, aftermarket BOV is illegal buy a stock one return to standard"

It's not 'apparently', IT IS a defect for any blow off valve which has any atmospheric capability, whether adjustable or not. I got defected with an adjustable BOV a couple months ago. But then there are cops who will sometimes let you off with a warning like the first time I was pulled over in my R33. They understood I recently bought the car and need to get some money aside to get it street legal. They didn't buy the story the second time :-)

Rules are rules, not matter how shitty they are.

everyone says "apparently" because at the end of the day,its at the cops disgression to issue you with a fine or not, whether or not you have done something wrong is another issue all together.

to hopefully answer some of your questions.... GTR bovs were obvously made for much higher powered vehicles then the gtsts, I have one. they are interchangeable with gtst ones, the reason why cops wont defect u is because they look very very similar to facotry gtst ones but can hold alot more pressure....

one thing I have found tho is that I dont get as much noise from the gtr one as the gtst, but it sounds alot tougher....

and it was my impression that to avoid issues with the law, keep things looking as standard/stealthy as possible... some may let you off, some may not, so why risk it when the stock items do exactly what the aftermarket ones do, if not better, just not as show offy...

dont bother ringing cops

some of them are as thick as 2 bricks! alot of them are starter-cops...just traffic cops..whos to say they havent been bored all day catching speeding drivers and do somethin different for a change...like defecting an import?!

when i had my supra few years ago... when one of them pulled me over.....he didnt even know what car it was to write on the fine....he had to ask his partner.

(the idiot couldve just at least walked to the back and see "Supra")

anyways, if anything.....ring the EPA. coppers ONLY fine you.....if they are even in doubt...they'll just issue u with a fine to get it off thier backs....

after the defect and fine.. you will need to go to a testing station/EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

and from memory...ALOT of modifications are illegal dude....not just BOVs

other things like Turbo upgrades, boost controllers, aftermarket Cats, aftermarket intercoolers, larger injectors with fuel rails etc etc etc

practically they made it in australia that its very hard to even add anything...unless engineered....

due to the fact that modified cars which obviously run more fuel and in turn...exceed their emission laws

it sux, but its ONLY illegal if you get caught!!!

ive been told by a friend of mind who actually said even Turbo Timers are worthy of an infringement...

due to the fact that you are not meant to walk away from a motor vehicle whilst its still RUNNING...

im not sure whether its because of the risk that the car taking off on its own or vunerable to crime? (like the lady in cabramatta who left her BMW running with her toddler son in there...some guy took off with it and dumped the car in the park with the windows closed, locking the doors...in turn, the kid died due to heat stress in the car)

either way, im sure every tom, dick & his dog has a turbo timer... as i said...its only illegal if they catch you.

Yep, anything that can release into the atmosphere. They made it pretty clear for me the second time I was pulled over. :ermm: I just listen to some NWA and deal with it.

then there is no point and a waste of money to get the GT-R wastegate/bov..?

like one of the guys said here...... the standard wastegate on the GTS-T can be louder than the GT-R

Ummm... why are you talking about wastegates? He is talking about BoV's lol. Anyway imo leave stock BoV in stock location with a blanking plate underneath but disconnect V-line so it doesnt pull anyway. Meanwhile down in the front bar area of your Intercooler piping weld on a flange down there and attach aftermarket blowoff valve with the V-line. Cops will go to look under bonnet and will go for the stock BoV and get pwned cuz its stock unless they smart enough to find the hidden Aftermarket one. Thats an idea i think would solve your problem, still a risk tho.

see.... if you got a cop who knew what he was doing and heard the sound of an atmospheric massive thing trumpeting air out and opens the bonnet to find this little stock bov... and you say "no mr officer, I don't have any other bovs"... and he looks a little harder and finds the other one, I reckon you'd get done alot worse. and for what real point to have one to try to get the attention of everyone?

Jay_r33, as you said, your a cruiser, the gtr bov will be plenty more then what you need and should serve your purposes just fine.

Get one off any rb26 engine, look in the for sale section for wrecking gtrs... 32,33.. it doesnt matter, they are the same... I got mine for 50 bucks.

DO NOT go to the cops they are assholes.

i went to them a few years ago and asked them what is needed for my FMIC on a turbo-charged commodore to be street legal and they said i needed a engineer certificate and i got one and came back a week later cause i was pulled over and was told that my engineer cert was only for the turbo kit and they gave me a warning.

i went back to the same guy at the cop station and told him about it and where it said on my cert that it was engineered and he said he wants to take a look at my car.

he told me to pop the bonnet and and he told me he was gonna defect me for the turbo-kit and the FMIC and the exhaust system i said it was all engineered he replied saying he don't know the engineer.

told me engineer and he took them to court over it and won naturally cause he was a certified engineer and no cost to me then i received a letter from the cops in the mail saying i had to go to either penrith or botany bay for a emissions test with the RTA.

it was a 14 hour drive down and 14 back from where i lived, you should have seen the coppers and the prick at the RTA faces when i passed.

bottom line.....they will try to f**k you over.

As far as i am aware in QLD if its atmospheric as in it does not re enter the intake path then it is illegal... even a gtr BOV can be illegal if you block off the plumbpacks and remove the pipes that run to the intake.

If you want to be hassle free from cops make everything look standard, ie no exposed pod filter no big shiny BOV's hanging out everywhere.
