My friend got stagea rb25 s1 engine in his A31. And we want to put nistune in. I'm trying to figure out how can it be done ?

Engine electronics looks like r33 series 1, but ecu plug is r34 type(grey). I've read that ecu is identical to r33, but more sensitive to boost increase. Like jumping to R&R mode even with slight boost increase. I think if I can fit r34 ecu, redo some wiring and use nistune. I'm pretty sure its possible to do.

Has anyone done it before ?

Anyone else running nistune in their S1 stageas ? How did you do it ?

Any input is much appreciated !

that is what i was hoping, but i think Z32 ECU would be easier, as it has been done on R33's... one forsale with nistune board ATM

dunno if NEO crap makes a difference, but Z32 can control VCT, if you dont care if you loose it i think r32 is fine

i know using 33 or 34 PFC you need to change a few things, maybe it is as simple as that to use a 34 stock ECU, or less again to be changed for a s2 stagea... might be best to speak to a tuner...

z32 runs a 33 RB25, with minor wiring changes, dunno if anyone has run a 33 with a 34 ECU for example...

It can't be done. Nistune have it on their list but I would think it is at least a year away. Guys run RB25 engines in their cefiros etc with an R32 ecu which can be Nistuned but I don't think that's a solution for the Stagea. Dr Drift and Toshi can put a daughterboard and tunable chip in the Stagea ecu and a guy in Auckland here is going to do the same for me. This approximates to the Nistune solution but I think that each of these guys will not share their software so you have to go back to them for another tune. This would be OK if you are not planning on more and more upgrades in which case the Vipec/Link option is the way to go. If money is a problem then at least an Apexi SAFC and preferably also an Apexi SITC will enable you to tune the engine and overcome the R&R problems.

Sorry - just saw that your Stagea engine is an A31 (sorry, I don't know what that is) but you possibly be able to go the R32 ecu route (you will lose the adjustable inlet cam unless you make seperate provision for it or just fix it in the setting that you prefer).

Not 100% sure about nisstune, but i just got a quote to chip the standard s2 ecu to what mods have been done,$800,if thats any help.

r32 ecu +adjustable cam gears... or Z32 ECU, both work on r33's, so why not us Robert? If a S2 ECU or R34 then that makes it less work as they atleast use the same plug bar some pinout variations...

I think the only way to find out is going to be to try it... I will start saving!

I think it shouldn't be that bad. Trent will probably advice to use field ecu harness. same plugs on both sides, just with wires, makes for a neat install.

But damn I would really like to hear one thing: I've done it it was hard but doable ))) And it works ! lol.

What we get with s1 stagea is all r33 gear. and r34-type ecu plug. So if you rewire the plug to connect to r34 ecu, make it work with tps/cas/acc, you should be able to fire up the engine.

Btw. This stagea engine got a pink label AFM. Like S2 R33s and R34 NEOs. Freak engine.

got a link to this "Field Harness" ? that is what i was thinking of, 2plugs with wires inbetween to chop instead of the loom!

i haven't seen a field harness to do a R34/S2 type plug to a R32/R33 plug type conversion. it would have to be a custom job.

field harness looks like this Ryan,

if i ever put my DFA in i will get one haha

i dont like the idea of hacking standard wiring!

Looking at the Nistune site, there are no R33/series 1 stagea ecu avaialable yet. The type 6 is still be developed.

You would need to get a series 2 auto stagea ecu, so you can use the type 4 board. Then you will have the same problems as people who have used a R34 Apexi power Fc in their series 1 stagea's with the slight wiring changes needed for it to work correctly. Note the people who have used the Apexi have manual cars, so no auto shift problems. If you use the series 2 auto stagea ecu, hopefully it will control the series 1 auto Ok. So you could run into more issues. Maybe Nistune could tell you if the auto will work Ok. You will also need to find the correct series 1 wiring harnes diagram. Apparently the series 1 stagea has 3 different types. Have a search for Duncans series 1 Apexi ecu install thread for some answers.

I have sold my Apexi power FC in my car and now looking at getting the Nistune. Basically does the same thing for a 1/3 of the price.

Well thats my theory...

just thinking about using a R34/S2 ecu on a S1 engine, i've seen a thred on here about people putting the RB25 NEO into there R33's and using the R33 loom and ecu, they just have to change a couple of things to get it to work, i know the cas wiring is reversed between the two for example. so i'd assume that it would work doing it the other way, you would just have to do similar to what was done in that conversion.

i don't know how relevant this is to the auto stagea guys though. how is the auto controlled in the S1? does it have a seperate auto ecu?

Not a freak. Series 1 stagea has the skyline series 2 rb25. Series 2 has the R34 neo engine but in each case the ecu's are unique.

I would have liked a "field harness" for my last stagea - I had about 20 different connections to my ecu wiring - that is why (since nistune is not available and i can't afford a link) I am getting the daughterboard plus chip in the ecu for around $800 this time.

guys be careful not to confuse the two types of ECU.... you wouldnt want to be trying to rewire in a Z32/R32 ECU with the different (blue) connector

Series 1 has the ER34 plug but similar processor to the ECR33/BNR33 ECUs... so your best option here if experimenting would be to plug in an ER34/StageaS2 ECU in with Nistune board. CRed tuning in Perth were going down this path last time I spoke to them but not sure on the progress since they were getting rid of the vehicle soon. I know it ran but not sure if any issues

The main differnece is the Series 2 autos are tiptronic and Series 1 are the older style. Since these later style ER34/WC34 automatic S2 ECUs are tiptronic wasnt sure on how the transmission controlling was going to work with the older box

(Basically theres two processors in these the newer grey plug AT ECUs... part number will be 23710-xxx1x to signify auto trans ECU with the extra bits. I believe also can be xxx6x ot xxx7x based rom my ER34 rom collection)

Hmm, I have a 25t x four, series 2 that has the E-ATx (no tiptronic) instead of the Dual matic M-ATx (tiptronic) box found in the RS four. Not sure how much difference there is from the series 1 E-AT to the Series 2 E-ATx.

Maybe I should check my ECU and see if its the same type used in the RS 4 as I'm considering the Nistune board for mine.

Gents,

I’ve been working this issue for the last couple of weeks. I have a 98 Series 1 and a 97 wreaker I'm using for parts. The 98 has ECU 23710-0V310 (Hitachi board not supported by Nistune). My first experiment was to get a JECS type ECU, # 23710-0V810 (late 98 on) and plug it into my Series 1. Immediately upon ignition I get a check engine light. Using Nissan Data Scan, I get a code 26, no boost sensor pressure. The car idles alright, about 500 rpm, a little low but steady. I take the car out for a drive and at first it drives o.k., again idle is a little low and tranny acts like it's slipping a little. Then after about 5 minutes the transmission selector switch (Power/Snow) "Power" light comes on and stays on regardless of which way its push. Also, the tranny acts like it has a 3000 rpm stall speed and moves slow until the car gets to around 50 kph. Second try was to plug in an IMPUL tuned ECU I have (JECS type with ability to solder in a daughter board), which is supposed to be for a 98 Stagea but the car acts the same way. I put the stock ECU back and all is normal. The pin out I got from the board (R34) shows pin 47 as the boost sensor reference and that it’s a red wire. The wire I have going to both the 97/98 ECU connectors is red/brown. I’ve ordered a full set of Shop Manuals (in Japanese) for my specific Series 1. Hopefully, once I get the manuals and translate the ECU pin out, I’ll be able to figure out which wires are doing what and how different the Series 1 and 2 pinouts are.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Mike

    • Hey was wondering if you ended up installing the R33 GTR speed sensor - I found one too and wanted to confirm it's a direct swap into the R34 6 speed?

    • Hi all,   I’ve got the biggest lot of problems with my R33 GTS-T   It was a freshly rebuilt 25th anniversary RB25DET (plastic cas, neo cams) probably 6 years ago now   The engine was running so well but I fkd up badly and trusted someone I’d known for 10 years that was well known around Plazmaman for his welding and fab work. I added a lovely photo of some of his previous work. Not sure why my car was worked on by whoever did this shit     I’m normally someone who would never open myself up to something like this, I still can’t believe I did it. Trusting him literally fkd it all up for me. Everything has been a struggle, like it’s almost been 6 years that’s how much I’ve just on and off been trying to work it all out.    All I wanted was a car that danced down low, like full boost from around 3~3500rpm to redline, don’t really care what power it puts down (if it ever does) but I just wanted it to be quick to get on it.    He recommended the turbo to get, I picked Hypergear but he told me to get the front 4” with a T4 and 0.68 rear housing.    I was expecting all these beautiful welds, tidy fab work and paid for it to be ready to go to a tuner when I got it back.    I got a car back that was an absolute mess, I actually couldn’t believe it was my car anymore. I don’t think you could even call what he did welds, they’re disgusting.    So I stripped everything he touched off it and with every bolt I loosened it just got worse and worse.    I covered it and literally built and finished another car in the meantime but now it’s getting to the point where I really want my Skyline back.   Its a struggle because I paid him to do all this shit because I didn’t know how to and now I’ve had to try and figure it all out omg    Please excuse the bird shit horrible welds, I’ve got my show pony car and am so beyond dealing with this car I don’t even really care at this point.    If someone told me about what he did to my car I wouldn’t have believed them but it happened to me. It was unbelievable. He went missing, my car went missing, it came back missing parts, the straight af chassis rails bore the scars of being dragged up a trailer backwards, even the sandwich plate was bent. Everything was leaking and open to whatever fell into it, rounded off/ missing bolts, power steering oil and coolant everywhere, no gaskets, parts stolen off it, even managed to damage the sump pan.   Promised me he’d finish the car, knew what it meant to me, I paid him thousands and thousands just for him to trash it. He told me he was fully licensed and insured, come to find out he’d cancelled his ABN, so obviously no insurance. I had laid up insurance on the car and would’ve been covered but I was scared they would’ve written it off or because the business was no longer trading I’d still be liable.    He was supposed to:  New fully custom mild steam pipe exhaust manifold with turbo location moved from factory position to high forward mount. (I don’t know if it is a mild steam pipe, I’ve got a funny feeling the waste gate isn’t in a very good position and I don’t think the outlets off each cylinder are equal) 4” custom stainless steel dump with external gate (he re-plumbed it) Cut and shut OEM intake manifold with throttle reposition (I ended up doing the throttle reposition) Box in pod filter (left out) New 100cel catalytic converter (pretty sure it’s there but unsure if it’s 100cel) Front mount intercooler piping fabricated to suit (all smashed up and rusty holes where he was supposed to make it look standard where fmic piping passes through. I don’t even think my front bar is going to fit 🙄) Custom 5” intake pipe from pod to turbo (didn’t come with it so had to do something to make it work with the Z32 afm)   Engine: Full cylinder head service & machining  Brand new valves Precision upgraded spring kit Engine block honed New bearings  New piston rings  New ARP conrod bolt kit New ARP head studs Cometic head gasket VRS kit   ATR43SS2 ball bearing turbo 0.68 rear housing  Turbosmart 45mm external wastegate (got delivered to the fab bloke, I’ve got no idea what spring is in it, I’m assuming the one that came pre installed) Walbro 260 fuel pump  Nismo 740cc injectors (tested to 880) Spitfire coil packs GCG FMIC RB25DET manual 5 speed 4:11 rear diff   I’ve got an Apexi Power FC in it atm, I was hoping to just get it to operating temp to make sure everything was okay before towing to a tuner but it’s over-fuelling too much. I don’t think that’s going to happen so i think I’m going to get either a Link G4 or Haltech for it. What do you guys recommend? I can’t work out the power FC so just gonna give up on that one     It’s got an exhaust leak coming from somewhere I can’t see 🙄    The fuel pressure was steady but now it like drops from 40 to 20psi randomly (noticed this yesterday)    I’ll attach pics of the shit he put on my car and the engine bay now as it sits    I really just need some help, I need a tuner in Sydney I can trust, I’d like to be with the car while it’s being tuned if possible, I know it looks terrible but unfortunately I’ve just got to put up with it for now and fix the cosmetic stuff later   Do you guys think the manifolds are going to be okay? Or do I throw the exhaust manifold and try again?   I don’t even think these combinations are going to work tbh   I know everything I fitted was rated to be able to take at least 400kW but most rated higher    If you’ve gotten this far I really really appreciate it 🙏 I don’t mind if you trash me or the car, I made a rookie error and f**k I’ve paid for it. As you’ll see 🙄
    • From everything I’ve heard you’ll be waiting a long time for  the parts to arrive
    • Have you looked at the workshop manual?
