I think I've probably already said it, but I owe a hge thanks to everyone that has helped on this car (and it has been a lot!)

Neil in particular for all his hard work this weekend....and every other bloody weekend in the last couple of years. He has his own race car and champ to run (and win back to back this year I guess is the plan) but still gives heaps of time to help. And without Mark's help I never would have worked out which end of the spanner to push on (veeeeery patient guy)

More recently, John from UAS has been a huge help in preparing the car including the great new tune (yep found some extra ponies over xmas) and right up to staying open late last night to help solve our overheating problems

Hoping the motor holds together to have a real go at the whole championship, I can’t afford another rebuild this year so if it lets go again its over :)

Thanks mate.

The car is standard n1 spec....32 n1 turbs @ 12psi, only mods are big exhaust, powerfc and Sydneykid bushes, shocks and springs. about 240kw which seems to be enough. It went much nicer when John turned it up to 18psi on the dyno (over 300) but we have to run standard boost. In fact the regs require a pop off valve which chucks out all the boost if it goes over 12psi.

Tyres are Kumho V70A, they are the new series control tyre which we used for the first time this weekend. I think they are a good second quicker than the Yoko A048R we used to have to run.

And its 1550kg with me in, so no lightweight either. The poor old commodores come in at 1630 though so at least I'm ahead there.

yeah I would be happy to swap mine for yours lol. BTW do you have standard ratio gears and diffs? You are going (way) quicker than me but using 2nd more?

Are you coming down to Wakie Dave? We just entered today, I've never been brave enough to enter one round until the one before is over :D

hi

we run 4.1 diff gear with 18" slicks not sure about wakie? i am spose to be running the zero car in the rally near bathurst that weekend.(LHD WRX) woohoo!!!!

some more footage of the starts. you can see how much cement dust on track race 2. car a bit of a hand full.

dave

BSM

ok fair enough, let Geoff know I'm ok to drive your car as well as mine.

Interesting how the start went, those guys got off the line pretty well. The race I did against them (day/night combined grid) they were rubbish.

I can't beleive how close you are to those cars - you have to give away at least 200kg and 200hp to them. very little wheelspin too considering the power you are putting down.

*edit* lol yeah race 2 start was better :D Jackson wasn't shy about pushing you off the track though

  • 3 weeks later...

OK.....round 2 this weekend at Wakefield....is anyone else entered? I hear Dave would rather drive rally cars and Geoff must have lost my number because he hasn't called :P

we've got a 1 hour enduro. It will be interesting to see if fuel, car and driver can last that long.

He called your mum- I hear she's pretty quick around Wakie

(not to mention that your wife's arguably done better in a daewoo there than you :P )

Updates?

A quick one, cos I'm shagged worse than the tyres were in qualifying.

Duncan proved he's not just a one trick wonder.... started from third, in first by turn one - up the inside this time ;)

Held the lead (though there was some fun when the safety car came out and the two blokes behind didn't see the flags).

After that was redressed and the race restarted (after 4 laps under yellows) he pulled out another good start and the win :)

Race 2 tomorrow isn't for points so I'm guessing he'll be taking it easy (pffff yeah right!)

How things go in race 3- the one hour enduro- is anyone's guess!

Why not use tomorrow mornings race to practice the wheel change...Screw the non-champ race,,,it means nothing and I'll bet that the other guys will treat it the same. Practice the wheel change twice.

Well Done Duncan,,,I'm smiling again.

Neil.

His got me changing the wheel.

Stupid bloody wheel, trolley jack and wheel brace not the most fun way to do it thats for sure.. The only loose nut will be the one sitting behind the steering wheel.

I think between race 2 and three there will be plenty of practice time too.

Kel posting using D's laptop here...

So Duncan set another record today, and one we would have preferred not to set – the first GTR to win a race with what we think is a spun big end bearing :P

Duncan started race 2 on the front of the grid and led from turn one right through to the finish. Unfortunately as he approached the chequered flag the oil pressure became a little non-existent (gooooooone) and the massive fail warning light came on.

We’re hoping it’s not too bad (only a light knock) so we could still be a chance for next round.

But no enduro for is this afternoon sadly, which is a shame as it had just started to rain and would have given us an even chance of a good result

I hate this racing caper sometimes

Big thanks to Brad and Jase who came a long way for not a lot of action.

I think my *no drinking before Targa* rule goes out the window tonight

    • Any number of different ways. Have the coils draw sufficient current to provide contact wetting. Use different contacts in the switch, either by material or design, better suited to the low current drawn by a relay coil. Etc.
    • Hmm, how does the R34 manage to have headlight relays then without getting excessive carbon buildup on the headlight switch contacts?
    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
    • Bugger "making it look stock". I put one conventional internally fused Hella relay behind each globe. I just pulled the plugs off the back of the globes and built new loom segments with male and female plug parts to match up to the original loom and the globe, and used the original power wires to each globe coming from the switch through the original loom plug to trigger the relays. Ran a big fat (also separately fused) power wire across the front of the car to feed all the relays. It's as ugly as f**k, but it is wedged down between the headlight and battery on the RHS and the airbox and headlight on the LHS, and no-one ever looks in my engine bay, and on the odd occasion that they do I simply give no f**ks for what they think. Fully reversible - not that you'd ever want to. For f**k's sake. It's a Skyline. They made million of the bloody things. We've been crashing them into roadside furniture for 30 years now. There is a negative side effect to putting relays on the headlights. The coil current is too little to properly clean the contacts in the switches and they get blacked up and you have to open them up every couple of years and clean them manually. I have 25 years of experience on this point.
    • I was poking through the R34 wiring diagrams vs R33 and noticed that the R34 has proper headlight relays while the R33 is like the R32 and sends full headlight power through the headlight switch. I'm not afraid of wiring but I really would like to do this in a way that looks OEM (clipping into open positions on the OEM relay box) and also unlike the factory wiring which interlocks the high beam and low beam on the halogen series 1 GTR headlights I want to make it such that turning on the high beams keeps the low beams on as well. Any advice on how to locate the specific connectors + crimp terminals + relays I need? I was thinking one NO relay for low beams and another for combined high + low running off the factory high beam headlight connector. I don't really want to splice into a crusty old probably discontinued factory harness so fully reversible is my goal here.
