i was thinkin about the security of my car which isn't good, its an auto so i think it can't be stolen unless hes got the keys since it has this lock where u cant push it into drive unless u have the keys in there. so my next concern is the stuff inside the car, if ever i park my car in a public spot and somewhere i know there will be people walkin across i take the faceplate with me, however i still dont think its secure enough, i mean it will have about at least 2k worth of audio gear and then about 1k of performace stuff so i'm pretty worried about it... i have an alarm but its just ur average one with knock detector and microwave. anyone who knows how to break into cars will get in so i'm thinking, whats the best way to secure everything?

things i will be doing soon is

1. tintin the car dark, dont' care about defects just have it dark so people cant' see in.

2. cutting the boot wire, i know people can still jack it.

what else?

dont worry about tinting it dark for security, if people want to see whats inside they still can.

get yourself some securafilm its 35% and is about 5 times thicker than normal tiniting, when someone hits your window with a bat or whatever it just cracks and stays in position like bulletproof glass.

its not that expensive either around 500 for the whole car

also get a good quality steering wheel lock. mine is huge, bright yellow, covers half of the wheel and made entirely of steel, a real visual detterant

hope that helps

i doubt people who really know how to steal cars would want my skyline ... its nothing special ... very stock lookin ... and they wouldnt' steal an auto since its hard to get it into drive without the key .. i can't see how they can do it ... i'm just afraid they'll knock a window and steal stuff inside it ... like the sound gear.

stealth install.

get a hacksaw and cut a stock headunit so its like a faceplate

re-install ur headunit so it sits down into the pockets a bit more.

when u leave ur car, sit that face plate over ur detached orignal headunit plate.

any retard stealing a car will know theres a system if u have no faceplate, its an aftermarket headunit, but if u have a shit one that looks stock, whos gonna bother.

put some audioline grilles over ur good speakers or use stock grilles if u have.

and dont go to where ur gonna park with ur boot rattling with subs (:

You shouldn't need to cut your boot wire..... In the boot area next to the latch, the is a little hole with a lever inside. Push one way and the internal boot opener is disabled so you must use the key to open the boot. Push the other way and it is enabled again.

The only thing I would definately do is cut the wire leading to the unlock button on the driver's armrest - coat hanger in, knock switch, door open.

Otherwise keep everything as hidden as possible - stock speaker grilles, hidden installations. I think the out of sight, out of mind principle works best!

Hippy, get into your car turn the key to acc put your foot on the brake and the gear selector can be moved! it is only when the ignition is on or the engine is running that the shift lock is active. my car is auto too and i was going to fit a transponder immobilizer to the shift lock and found this out. :D get a viper paging system. and if your goodies aren't on display they won't tempt some asphole to break in. Also bear in mind that the harder things are to remove the more likely they will be damaged beyond repair. Be careful where you park your car.

My car was broken into once and my head unit was stolen. And I tell ya, it only takes one screw driver to unlock the car and they're in. It's also as easy to break into as VL's.

Only way to beat this is take the face off. As for the boot, I just unhooked one of the wires in the boot and it no longer opens from inside. However this makes it very inconvienient so in my case I got an alram with boot release so it aint too bad.

Just don't flaunt your audio and with a bit of luck you'll be aaight.

NOTE: One thing not to do is, secure your head unit to the din so it takes more than a screw driver to take out.

My friend used rivots to secure his head unit, anyways his car was broken into and his headunit was still there except that his whole dash board was smashed. Everything that could be wasted was wasted, including the headunit itself. SO theres something to be aware of!!

Hippy - I just went out to my car and tried everything and the shift lock works when the key is out, dosen't work when on acc, works on ign unless foot brake is applied. so you'd be ok if the potential theif didn't remove your key barrell. A simple slide hammer would take care of that, but how paranoid are you? I personally am incredibly paranoid! I even removed my limited edition Blitz Black light boost gauge when my car is parked in the city!! I have a Quik Trak system and a viper remote start alarm and i am upgrading to a paging system soon for peace of mind. I also have a 14 piece Garage Impul body kit to be fitted soon and feel i won't be able to park it anywhere except mabe my garage! and that is full of crap!-- sorry for crapping on, but my worst nightmare is theft and vandalism, I always am very careful about where i park my car and find myself checking on it constantly whenever i'm out. It can take 5 minutes for a phone call from the QRC (quiktrak response centre) and lots can happen in 5 min. Mabe a stealth approach is the best option for your car and don't crank the doof doof near where you will park your car. Mind you it's fun to see people look over their shoulder. It takes all sorts of assholes to make the world go round, chances are if you're moderately sensible about how you display your car and it's goodies you will be ok.

Sparky by trade, now subbying to QuikTrak and specialising in alarm installs mainly on jap imports. Can't wait for the import industry to pick up again, only a matter of weeks by the look of things

    • Which are almost all nonsense. Ignore. Obviously enough, if it is not a porous block, then any such thing is a waste of time. External block surface? Would be a waste of time, if the block was actually porous. It would need to go on the inside, which is inaccessible, and even if the block was open deck so that that area was acessible, it would be unlikely to work. But seeing as this is all nonsense, stop worrying about it.   If the coolant is coming from the side of the block it is 10:1 odds that it is either a welch plug, or it is coming from the head gasket. Maybe from one of the coolant lines feeding the turbo, or even the heater. Liquids that leak from up high can travel sideways along casting surfaces or pipes, etc on the engine before finding a spot from which to drop.
    • Yeah rust is sadly also a bit of an issue on my car. Doubt there is many cars out there that actually have no rust in those aeas. The strut towers look fine but some of the surounding metal sheets show a bit of brown cancer peeking out from in between. I hope I can make do with external remedies and won't have to rip open the whole front end anytime soon. It looks somewhat minor compared to some shit I have seen online. I have worked on a few cars but I expect the RB26 to be my first 'engine out' job at some point.
    • Welcome Jan, It's very likely that you are in over your head. You'll just have to learn to swim hard and fast! These old rust buckets have more ways to bankrupt us than almost any other car. But hopefully there's nothing wrong that ruins the whole show! We can help a fair bit. There's plenty here who've been fixing these things for >25 years. cheers
    • Hi all. First off, thanks for reading my post. So end of last season I put the car away knowing I was leaking at least two fluids. One of them being rear turbo's oil. I went to my car recently that is waiting in a garage to take a peek with my boroscope to try and see if I can narrow down the souce of oil before taking it out of storage. What I found is not so great I think. The rear turbo is (probably) leaking from the oil drain. The hose and it's clamps are probably the original ones, so most likely just worn out or loose. However I spotted a line of rust going straight down from the turbo oil feed, as if water leaked out of there at some point. Also explains the red liquid that was dripping from my front subframe, which I initially thought was power steering. I can even see coolant drops hanging off the side of the oil pan as well. After a quick hit on the web I found a select few discussions about porous engine blocks. My question is if the pics of the turbo oil feed and the left hand side of the block (imgur link below) looks like it could be exactly that to you. Maybe someone in the community has seen it before and knows what it looks like. If it actually is a porously leaking block, has anyone attempted at fixing it with simple methods like putting a sealer in the cooling system and using something like jb weld on the block surface, or will it just leak in 2 weeks again? I could not find any detailed info or pictures on this topic. If I need a new engine, tell me softly. https://imgur.com/a/knVvmZ8
    • Hey all. I'm 23 and from Germany, September last year I bought a mildly modded 1995 GTR Vspec. Looks great and was fun so far, but I already have a list of issues of various severity that I need to take care of, potentially growing longer the closer I look. I just hope I'm not in over my head, I really want to keep the car and work towards it becoming great. I hope y'all will help me out in getting there, I am positive I will need help sooner rather than later to figure out how to proceed. greetings, some pics of the car I posted to imgur. https://imgur.com/a/StKkabz
