Ok... the turbo comes off my car tomorrow night and then gets looked at next week by various places.

I'm thinking, as a rebuild for my t04e could be up near the $1000 mark worst case, and i'll probably look at chasing a lot more power later on.

I may aswell hi-flow it or whatever whilst im at it. Im ultimately going to be after 300rwkw.

I have 203rwkw now on 13psi. The turbo is efficient for probably another, eerr. 4psi or so i think.

As it's a garrett and they like lower boost levels.

So as i could be spending near $1500-$2000 on my t04e...

Is there something better that i can get for around the same price... probably i'd got as far as spending $2500-$2700 at the MOST but i have no idea what

The one critical thing though... is this turbo must bolt up to my GTS-R manifold which my current one does now for my own reasons i want to keep it.

a) Looks good and keeps the stealth look as i've got a nice factory heat shield that covers everything.

B) Works well in the low-mid range

c) Makes my car sound totally different to any other RB25 going around so im nice and unique.

d) I'm cheap and cant afford to have a manifold made up anyways :(

So that probably limits my choices a little...

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that'll be great so i can go shopping next week with half an idea.

I'm not too keen on 2nd hand goods as i dont really know where they have come form and what not and i cant afford a turbo dying 6-12 months down the track!

mmm that;s what im thinking. How much is a t04e worth ?

it's got me buggered... as if i sell it then i'd have much closer to $3000 to play with.

I didnt realise the new BB HKS TO4Z was on the market yet.

The turbo is only worth what someone is willing to pay... but at a guess i think you could safely say youd gett $600 on up for one.

Ive read that some shops have had some success with GT25 turbos having GT30 compressors and 4" compressor housings.

Sounds like you're gonna have probs, chasing too much on too much of a tight budget. hmmm...what about those injectors?

have a look here anyway, should be something to get you started on ideas..

If you buy a cheap turbo, thats what you get.

For your budget, I think you may be pushing it a bit, esp as you are looking for around 300rwkw.

You could get a turbo that will make that figure within your budget, but what about response and efficiency?

My recommendation would be something like a GT35R that Per4manz turbos in WA sell. They have had some good results (it has been developed in house) with this turbo on RB25s, and 300rwkw is well within its range. It will bolt on with adaptor plates, but will need an external gate. The turbo itself sells for under 2.5K, a second hand gate probably $4-500. From there it would be possible to fit the gate to the turbine housing, but you will of course need to have a dump made.

Per4manZ actually do a package, fitted for around 5K with tuned lenght manifold. This acutally is really cheap when you add on the added costs of oil and water lines and pipeage to and from the turbo, fitting, gaskets, head studs etc.

Remember too that with 300rwkw, you will probably need to decompress the engine, or do a rebuild with forged internals:)

Other considerations will have to include clutch, fuel pump and injectors, and a new AFM or running from MAP(assuming you already have an aftermarket ecu).

For the sort of money you outlined, realistically, an upgraded turbo wont come near to the sort of power you are chasing.

Something like a HSK 2530 or 2835, second hand if you can pick one up (which you should be able to) for under 2K, with associated change to pipeage and sale of your own turbo, would come close to coming in on budget.

This will give you a noticeable improvement to the stock turbo, but not up around 300rwkw. With a 2530 or 2835, when you go to sell it, you will get most of your money back, if not all. To me a high flow would be somewhat of a waste, as you will get no where near your purchase price back.

Even with a 2530 or 2835, you will still be looking at clutch upgrade (if not already done) and fuel pump, plus an AFM - but these would probably be needed either way. And you will need some tyres with grip:)

Sorry, waffled on a bit:D

Hi R31Nismoid, my suggestion would be a Garret GT25R, good for 48 lbs of air per minute, which is around your 300 rwkw target. It will bolt up to your manifold and most other pipework as well, has an internal wastegate and at around $2,500 is within your budget.

The only problem I see in achieving 300 rwkw is that it is going to require substantial upgrading of a large number of support systems. Almost everything on an RB25DET is past its limit at 250 rwkw. You will be looking at stuff like injectors, fuel pump, camshafts, exhaust manifold, oil capacity, water radiator, fuel pressure regulator, headgasket, BOV, ECU, AFM etc etc.

To take an RB25DET from its standard 120 rwkw to 300 rwkw always costs, in my experience, around $25K, if you do some of the work yourself. Subtract from that what you already have (that is capable of supporting 300 rwkw) and see if it is within your budget.

Hope that helps

No worries about the waffle ! i do it too...

I dunno about 2nd hand goods though, i've seen garrett items (new) for low mid $2000 so that's withing my price range, 2nd hand could have it blowing up in 6-12 months and that realistically is something i really wont be able to spend $$ on again. ??

Or am i not right in assuming that ? A new turbo in theory would last longer ?

an im not going to be selling my car anytime soon so it doesnt bother me about a re-sale value.

i've just had bad luck with 2nd hand stuff that was fine when i got it and just died 6 months later so im skeptical at times.

Maybe i should've also have said that the motor will more than likely get a 3ltr bottom end late this/early next year. Or i might stay 2.5 ltr.

But either way it'll have money spent on it :) so it wont have stock internals.

But so far...

*Fuel system is almost complete. I just need bigger injectors and i'm virtually finished.

*Clutch, done.

*suspension done.

*brakes - half way there at the moment - awaing more funds :( as we all are !

*AFM, no drama's there.

*tyres that'll be ok too.

*various things like oil coolers are also things that will be done once the motor comes out.

It's just soley turbo im talking. The supporting elements are either done or just about done before i got the car so i've saved a great deal of money there, hence why i snapped up the car when i saw it.

Thanks SydneyKid (as always)... i was hoping something would bolt to my manifold that i curretly have, and you know which one im talking about (gts-r ones) so it helps a lot :)

I'll get some pics up later tonight of the whole set-up, including manifold. The turbo comes off tonight i hope.

So that will give you an idea of what i've already got.

And most of the work will be done by people i know so labour is not an issue, just the price of VB's at the time :P

i'll post back up later tonight with pics.

thanks for eveyones help so far. It's helping me get a great idea before i got shopping :D

True what you say about second hand, you can get burnt, but there are some great bargains too.

Make sure you get the turbo checked out properly before buying, the only problem with Garrett turbos is they dont have the resale of a HKS.

The reason I bought HKS second hand turbos up was as a stopgap between getting a turbo suitable for 300rwkw, and now.

For your budget you probably wont get a good turbo capable of supporting 300rwkw, and be responsive enough that you dont end up with a lagmonster.

Good luck anyways

Something local owners have mentioned is the Radium breather pipes de-restrict the valve cover but it actually produces an undesirable outcome in practice, way too much air is sucked out of the crankcase and a ton of oil comes with it as well. As far as I can tell the PCV diaphragm in these modern euro wet sump performance engines is active during boost as well, there's just a check valve to block boost from entering the valve cover and crankcase as there's no inherent check valve function in these diaphragm-type valves. Hopefully I'll be able to try some of this out soon. The Volvo XC90 4.4 V8 has a nice external version of these things.
