Reading the Ford XR6T thread got me thinking about he other night when i was dribbling sh1t like i normally do late at night after a drink:(

A friend was tossing off (with good cause) over the 4.0L Ford six and what a turbo has done for it. And like the Nations Cup Monaro, imagine what Tickford/FPV could do if given a free reign to come up with a competition derivative.

But, if i was really going to become a batty boy for a day it would have to be a TVR Cerbera (or Speed 6 which is even lighter again). Now i would normally go for the V8 model, but it is also offered as a 4.0L 350bhp, dry sumped inline 6.

So what does every turbo nut think when he is presented with an 1100kg chassis with again, a 4.0L twin cam, dry sumped NA six cylinder with a std 10.5:1 compression ratio.

Now that would be the building block of somthing special:D ... and me for one i think i think id trade in that dream of a Mines R34 for one.

I think the Speed12 racer's already gone there Roy. Also try the TVR "Black Cat" T440R. It's lighter than the Cerbera (kerb weight of 950kg) with a psycho 4L six (328kW, 460Nm). and it's NA. Don't ask me how they make those numbers, i just know they do. Currently, there are 5 in the world.

The Speed 12 was a Supercar competitor. I have a video on it and it is the wildest sounding thing at full tilt.

But imagine as an aftermarket "tuned" car rather then a factory special.

The T440R is awesome, carbon fibre moncoque etc, etc, but a bit highly tuned with compresion probably over the 11.0:1 for a turbo...and again a little expensive on the 2nd hand market due their spec and age.

I just love TVRs.

Ok so if we had a budget of 200k, what would we do with our money.

Im thinking TT V8 TVR, or if space is a problem go the 6-cylinder with a big nasty single turbo like a HKS T51:D

Actually, TVR reckon their engines aren't suited to turbocharging or supercharging (i had to speak to them about some of their products).

They were saying you can have too much power in a lightweight car, especially with the accelerative characteristics of a Big-Ass Single Turbo (BAST - that's a technical term for you newbies).

The T440R is highly tuned, but not tuned to its max according to an engineer called Berkcroft (that's his surname). They were saying a 4.3L super-tune unit could crack almost 350kW, from an NA six cyl!

I was seriously looking at TVR Tamora which runs the same engine, slightly detuned.

I suspect that the engines are pretty strung out, straight out of the box......could you really push them *that* much further? That 350kw out of 4.3l = 81kw per litre. Still less than an S2000 but right up there....

Top bunch of cars though, eg look at the interior of that Cerbera that was down at Wakefield the other day. No bloody "parts-bin" switches in that girl :)

I think thats an around about way of saying their is realistically no point to having more power, the car already does 0-100 in a dash under 4 seconds.

So they are not suited to turbocharging from a chassis dynamics perspective. That makes sense as all the reviews i have read have said they are livewires wth the std weight and power.

Thats not to say the engine isnt suited to it, just that the behaviour of the car/chassis with turbos isnt what one would expect from a car direct form a manufacturers door, even TVRs door who would seem to already stretch the usual norms.

Yeah pretty amazing what they can do with N/A straigh sixes... ah the straight six, gotta love em ;)

BMW M3 CSL 3.2 N/A 6: 265kw's. 370NM

That's 82.8kw's/litre. TVR Cebera at 269kw's or 67kw/litre

Go BMW!! hehehe.

If u take the spruced up version previously mentioned (328kw one) that's 82kw/litre. Pipped by .8kw :)

Look at the figures coming out of these N/A straight sixes. Then go look at the 235kw's of a holden 5.7 V8 :bahaha: what a waste of space. Or even the top 300kw 5.7 V8, 52kw/litre. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. Give BWM or TVR 5.7 litres and a bent 8 to play with and see what they come up with :)

S2000 = 176 from 2l = 88kw/l, we have a new winner for NA

Ferrari 360 is 298kw from 3.6l = 82.8 to match the BMW

Although apparently GT2 porsche is 340kw from 3.6 = 94.4kw/l :)

And a good old skyline gtst is only 74.4

is the 360 Modena a V8? Good figure that, 298kw's. But yeah, looks like Porsche takes the cake.

74.4 is a pretty good figure i would think.

The new (MY04) GT2 Porsche is even more powerful, but it's the torque that i love: 3.6L TT with 700Nm!

The "Red Rose" spec TVR Cerbera has more than 328kW, try 360kW from a 4.5L DOHC-per bank V8. Then there's the T440R racers with 344kW/470Nm from an NA 4.4L 6-cyl.

There's the gold Meguiar's TVR Cerbera show car in SPEED 009 (on sale now) with 414kW from its 4.2L V8 as well...

Also, the Gen IIIs are seriously detuned. By how much? Well, the "unlimited-edition" LeMans C5R Corvettes that were at SEMA a couple of years back have stroked to 7L, run twin turbos and put out over 1300hp.

High kw/L is all good and well, but if not given any displacement or forced induction then i dont see the point.

As nice as the S2000 is, i put it in the same basket as an MX-5, a fun sports car, not a performance car. (My opinion only)

If something is going to be considered as a credible performance car then at 2L it needs a turbo, or at least a 3.0L or bigger NA engine, prefereably over 3.5L.

As for writing off the GenIIIs, im like a scratched record, i wouldnt be in a hurry to dismiss one. Its a shame aftermarket tuners need to modify the parent cars chassis to give the engine a capable platform to demonstrate itself.

Read up on why GM used pushrods, and you will see that it doesnt affect the performance potential of the engine, due to the design consideration/work that went into the engine when tranforming it from a light-commercial truck engine.

Yeh that TVR is a bit over the top, std body would do me fine, and the nitrous.

Here in Melb, Nizpro is coming up with a 400rwkw (yes, 400rwkw) bolt-on kit for the XR6turbo.

Basically, I think its new manifold, strengthened rods, injectors, fuel pump, bigger intercooler, new ECU, and prolly another couple of things. Stock turbo I think, and thats about it. And apparently its about a 10k upgrade from stock.

Now that is some serious rwkw! So the xr6t could be a serious weapon in the next few years.

    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all!     • Hey everyone, This is my first post apart of the introduction. I tried searching a bit on the forum but couldn't really get a straight answer. I got the car to my mechanic as I felt it being weak. It seems that it was missing on two cylinders due to the injectors. I had all my injectors clean and the car runs much better. The mechanic also confirmed my suspicions that the cat is clogged and needs to be tackled asap. The cat rattles a bit and the hot exhaust warning frequently lights up when driving after getting the injectors clean. In my introduction I was asked about what modification I might be interested in and mentioned a cat delete. From what I was told, this is not really beneficial on the RB20DE and there are more cons than pros.  Could perhaps anyone give some suggestions on what the best course of action would be since the current cat is toast and needs to be removed/replaced anyway? I can also sometimes smell a strong smell of fuel, but I'm not sure if this is related.

    • When I was replacing my pump due to being stranded in the wrong state, I went with the Deatschwerks 320lph kit. It is a direct plug in to the stock wires, harness, everything.
