I have been told by my fabricator / tuner that in all likely hood, a twin 2860 -5 will probably surge ...

Application is bolt straight up to standard engine and standard manifold, aftermarket exhaust, injectors and all the small supporting mods ... 20psi ~ 340ish awkw.

Reasoning - both turbos will be pushing large amounts of air ... in doing so, they will fight against each other and surge / cause the boooof boooof boooof air pressure noise .... and the turbos will shiet themselves eventually...

Basically, any twin setup size that is 2860 -5 size onwards, will have this problem on a standard manifold/application...

Does any1 have any experience with this?

Does it sound right at all?

mythbusters ahoy!

there are two known occurances of surge that we usually refer two in the GTR twin turbo setup

1) compressor surging known and heard as "flutter" when coming on boost

this is a result of the pressure in the manifold going past the compressors effiency, ie the compress map says in the best scenario it can flowing at best 16psi of compression, but for some reason the manifold pressure is say 18psi so the compressors surge resulting in vl turbo style flutter on boost, ie: the compressors are out of effeiency and surging / erractic operation / wobble

any form of compressor surge is bad, can be fatal, and should be avoided/corrected at any cost

2) compressor chuffing / the turbochargers chuff when coming on boost / aka shuffling

this is usually caused by aftermarket pods and piping kits to the stock turbo's. basically the air reverbates and chops past the airflow meter, so it runs like a bitch.

this is common with say 2530s and custom piping and pods. not very common on stockers i dont think, but certainly possible

the std accordian style pipework reduces this by altering the path of airflow, when you replace with shiny smooth pipework, the problem occurs

compress surging, try lowering the boost, see if that helps

the compressors shouldnt surge under normal conditions

could indicate compressor failure, out of balanace or chopped wheels

again assuming the same problem occurs on say stock boost

if #2

try seperating the pods or putting a shitload of pipework between one of them or both them,

try like some good sized pool shop vacuum hose for one of both of the pods, try bending the pods intake pipes.

anything to alter the intake path of air to the compressor inlet snout

GTSS, HKS hard pipe kit, PFC djetro, 18PSI, 331RWKW, no shuffle at all

interesting, seeing that he's asking specifically about a different turbo... :D

2860-5, 340kw, no shuffle. Std airbox, greddy hard pipe kit, std BOVs.

when i bought my GTR, one of the things that sold me on my car was hearing the sweet sound of the turbos spooling, as ive said before im not a big fan of all the BOV, wastegate loud exhaust's noises etc, so when i got my car back was kinda gutted.

big turbo shuffle, BOV noises (even though its plumbed back) etc.

would some how building a box around the pods mask the noise, not that is any room!

    • Howdy all,   I had my rb25det S2 rebuilt and finally started it today but have run into a few issues  Engine sounds like a a diesel easiest way to summarise like small ticking, gets louder when revs are slightly adjusted  The engine builder repainted the engine cover leaving no where for me to go off with lining up the CAS so have it as central as possible so not sure it that could be affecting it?, changed the gearbox fluid too but won’t seem to go into gear when running, and only 1 to 4 when off having a hard time finding 5th and reverse anyone got any ideas or a base for me to start off? much appreciated 
    • Well, no. It's an 023, which is pretty similar to an 040. Although it is hard to tell from the specs, as given.
    • Hmm. Maybe the (other thing I forgot about!) Haltech removes at least some, if not all, of the problem I described. I guess there is still the possibility of getting it wrong if the AC is set up/wired up for the Haltech as if it was in an R34 (simply because it's on a Neo), and that's playing foul with the R32 AC computer.
    • Glad it eventually came out Duncan!   I believe that might be 040. 044 is the inline pump, so has screw fittings in and out. 040 is more just drop it in fuel and the bottom is "open" (mesh) from my memory
