hey all

got some concerns with my ecu in my 1997 series1 RS4

ive searched through the forums for people with the same probs but cant find a definate answer

any advice would be greatly appreciated

1-its got no rev limiter,it pulls off the tacho past 9000rpm in any gear...im not too keen on a rebuild when it finally goes bang

2-the 4WD light is constantly on,from the day i bought it, it has never been off and when pushed hard enough the stag will slide when it comes on boost through corners.which is normally fun but not in a 1600kg wagon with only basic suspension mods (whiteline front swaybar)with standard height, standard shocks and springs.

the car has only had simple mods,as its a daily driver eg- pod filter, custom dump, advance front pipe 2 1/2 exhaust, gutted cat(sshhh) and its had the 100,000k service at sinergy motorsport

the guys at sinergy looked all thro the car and found no aftermarket speed/rev cut devices and also did a codes check with no results...?

numbers for the ECU are

23740 0V300

pcmnr030 c1 7327

any help and advice would be great

and whats this brown connector thing in the loom?

I have the ecu (an OV300) out of my wrecked Stagea which i could post to you if you want to see what difference it makes. I want it back because i am getting another Stagea and want to send the spare ecu off to get rechipped while I am driving with the other one but if you isolate the problem(s) to the ecu it shouldn't be too hard to get another one. Let me know if you want to try it.

Another idea: take the cover off the ecu and get as high as possible resolution photo and send it to Toshi. he will know if it has an aftermarket daughterboard but unless he recognises the handiwork he probably won't have the software to tune it...worth a try though.

ps normally you would do the back sway bar first - with just the front there would be a tendency to understeer (i.e. go straight ahead on corners).

hi rod,

Its hard to tell but is that loom modified? The blue tape around the Black with Red stripe wire. any other things like this on the loom. If you want we could meet up and compare ecu looms even though ive got a piggyback wired in..

thanks for the input lads, and thanks to rob (kiwirs4t) for lending me his spare ecu.and chris, yeah there is a couple of other wires that look to me like they have been cut and re-joined with electrical tape so having a quick look at yours would be a great help i think.ill be at adam's stag cruise on sunday if you want to have a chat then if your going.and ryan,my mate has a nissan consult cable from his old 300zx can you tell me whether that will plug in or not?

thanks again guys, youve all been a great help

I asked about that exact same brown plug ages ago when I first got my Stagea thinking it had at sometime had a piggyback ecu but turns out it's normal. Also the wire that you have that is taped up you may find is the speed sensor signal wire. Mine has been spliced into for use with a Turbo timer with speed tests etc. Also had the Handbrake cable spliced into for the Turbo timer so you may find yours has been as well if there was a turbo timer installed at some time.

I'll try to remember to bring a lappy with DataScan on the cruise - look for a Silver S1 with rego STAG34.

I agree that you need to check the 4WD issue out before you possibly break something in the xfer case...

well, received the spare ecu in the post yesterday(thanks again to rob),fitted it up,and after a quick blast around the block she still has no limiter and the 4wd light is still on...after the cruise on the weekend,im 100% positive shes only RWD.im not fussed about the RWD but i do need a limiter...and after a lot of research(for and against) i think ill track down a BEE*R power builder rev limitter.there is a lot of positive opinions and a quite a few negatives on this unit but i think it will be the quickest, easiest and cheapest method of getting my limiter down to a safe RPM.and i dont want this unit to bash it all day long for the exhaust flames, just want to limit the revs.

im still open to ideas and opinion about a limiter, and is anyone running a BEE*R limiter in their stag?

thanks again for your help everyone

There should be no need to run a rev limiter as the ecu does that. If replacing the ecu didn't help then something is wrong and needs to be tracked down and fixed. Either someone has deliberately disabled it or wiring has become damaged. An aftermarket rev limiter will be using/modifying the same signal so probably won't work. If you can borrow one i guess its worth a try but I don't think its the answer.

I got my new S1 checked out by the AA (I bought it sight unseen, 1200km away) and they said that the 4 wheel drive didn't work and the warning light stayed on. When I got the car I filled up the reservoir in the boot (it was low) and its sweet now. But I was lucky. Next stage for you is to bleed it, check that the fuses have not been pulled and yes, see if the front driveshaft is in place. Other possibilities are that some one has pulled the fuses for fun or on a dyno and stuffed the clutch packs. Have you run the Attesa diagnostic? Its on this site somewhere... someone may be able to point you to it.

BTW I have a spare Attesa ecu and the gear that sits on top of the diff.

Good luck!

Tangles its unlikely to be the ecu as the ecu I sent Rodders definitely limited the revs to about 7000 rev/min in my car. (Although having said that Rodders it would be simple to open the two ecus and compare the insides - an aftermarket daughterboard would be really obvious but I doubt theres one there since swapping the ecus made no difference).
