firstly this is a mental exercise to figure out cost as I'm considering buying a sedan.

I did a bit of digging on these and like the TI/or silouette versions.

found costing on them in the $2k-5k area and I'm looking at RB25det halfcuts in manual form (ala R33 s2) -$2-3K

now the questions:

4 spot brakes - how? does R32,33/Z32,31 stuff swap to get 5 stud on the front, twin spot rears - how? - redrill or new axles?

lights - best version for HID lights ?

rear swaps (foudn some info on the R31 site) after the stovetop look now logic tells me that teh sheetmetal is the same - correct?

LSD (part of the reason I like the two models) what type? can you shove somethng else in it?

factory coolers - oil,Psteer,Geabox? - available? where (nissan?)

rust on body - where do I look?

theres probably more questions - I'll add to it as I go.

  • 3 weeks later...

Better off putting Z31 or GTS struts into a local car to get a floating hub setup. Local R31 has fixed hubs, whereas Z31 and GTS have floating hubs. Get your rears redrilled.

lights - best version for HID lights ? Any version will be fine. Lot's of people use the late model import lights, as these look like Xenons with HID globes in them

rear swaps (foudn some info on the R31 site) after the stovetop look now logic tells me that teh sheetmetal is the same - correct?

Sheetmetal is the same for all rear light fittings, even coupes. Stove top will bolt straight up. Make sure you get plenty of sealer in behind them so they don;t leak. You may have to fiddle with wiring looms, as they are different between the series.

LSD (part of the reason I like the two models) what type? can you shove somethng else in it?

Only the silhouette had the LSD, not the Ti. You can go to Kaaz LSD if you are wanting a tougher LSD.

factory coolers - oil,Psteer,Geabox? - available? where (nissan?)

Trans coolers are better from the aftermarket shelf, engine oil coolers, the local GTS had an excellent setup, but you will find these difficult to source from anywhere. Your only option may be aftermarket again.

rust on body - where do I look?

Behind the front guards, local cars are shocking for rust where the firewall joins the inner guards, especially eastern seaboard cars. You can see rally bad stuff if it is there by looking at the drivers side A" pillar door hinges. If there is any sign of rust around the door hinge, it's a safe bet it has expensive rust to repair under the guards.

Lift up the rear boot seal and inspect, most will have minor rust there, but minor is easy to fix, major isn't. Some earlier cars experienced rust in the roof rails and where the "C" pillar meet the roof line. Other than that, you shouldn't find any bad rust on a local car.

theres probably more questions - I'll add to it as I go.

I hope that helps with your questions.

R31 skyline club has an excellent tech section. Classic Skylines Australia is fairly new, but caters for the earleir model cars too.

I can help you with genuien parts if you were after any as well. Carsales is a fairly good place to look for good cars, adn tehre is always plenty of them available for sale on R31 Skyline Club. Plenty of people in there who know lots about these cars.

thanks!!

I tried to buy TUFF31 on R31 and the owner didnt wish to reply to my postings. I was prepared to fly to SA and drive it back.

been looking at wrecks to gauge rust in the chassis onthem ( I spend a bit of time scouring local yards) and I now have a decent idea where to look.

didnt know about the Z31 connection. though if nissan is anything like subaru then anything fits anything.

with the rear end I figured redrill was the only way to do it. HR31 as I understand is a different kettle of fish. (been looking at HR31 coupes)

Chris, a friend of mine has a s3 TI, white, stock as, paint needs a good cut, but is complete and all options still work, probably the cleanest engine bay I've seen in one, no rust in the usual spots, going cheap. Come from a 31 myself, there's a lot of common parts for upgrade. You're welcome to pm if interested.

Cheers, Dale

hi chris,

i've got a passage gt with a rb25 and 25 box... goes in relatively easy.

brake - 33 gts-t rotors/calipers fit all round on import struts (so coupe is fine) mine has 33 gts-t calipers, and rotors re-drilled to 4 stud.

the front hubs can be drilled to 5 stud, but the rears use a 'square' plate so it cant be drilled to suit, you can use Z31 rear hubs i believe, or possibly even get billet ones, depending on how much power you plan on throwing at it.

rear swaps - i assume you just mean tail lights? 99% sure they are a straight swap.

lsd - my factory lsd seems pretty decent, doesnt single peg. i do have a tomei 2 way sitting in the shed for it as well though.

my 31 has quite a few mods done, so if you have any questions can shoot me a pm. :(

s13 coilovers fit in the front if you use s13 hubs and some other bits (google this)

rear ones go in but need new holes drilling for the tops of them

they must be height adjustable ones tho otherwise it will be sitting on the ground

the lsd rebuild kit for a BA ford falcon is the same as an r31 borg warner lsd diff giving you a tight lsd for ~$200

they are good cars and go alright

could look at getting a cam too or even just getting a spare head from the wreckers and giving DIY port polishing a go

Sorry, it didn't load like I expected it to.

If you search Carsales.com.au your going to find a red GTSII which is for my money, a far better idea than bastardising another Ti/Silhouette & for similar end money.

In October 06 I did a 1UZ conversion to an MX83 Cressida. I owned the car & wasn't buying it to convert.

The front cut cost me $2500 + frt from Adelaide, but by the time I had it wired, changed the suspension and brakes to comply for engineering, paid the engineer, the whole thing owes me more than 10K, so don't kid yourself, any conversion is the cheap way out.

If this conversion goes ahead, he won't get much change from 15K if it's done right. A good Silhouette is going to cost more than 2 or 3K and an R33 GTS25t manual front cut will cost more like 5K rather than 2 or 3.

Let's see, we have the car & front cut and spent 10K, we haven't fitted anything, not wired anything, we got SFA except some parts and a good Silhouette and your saying a good limited edition GTSII isn't value?

You have to be dreaming!

Cheers, D
