I know it's his call, but his converted R31 Silhouette in 10 years will be worth shit when the GTSII will be worth another 5 or 10K on current investment.

I'll stick to my poor R30 & keep watch on him in my rear view mirror. lol

i dont understand what your saying... he can spend ~$3k on a normal 31, and then 10k on mods... or he can spend $15k on a gts, and then 10k on mods....

either way he has to spent the same amount on mods to get what he wants, so why does it matter if he buys a cheap 31 or a gts?

A GTSII Skyline was 1 of just 200 built by Fred Gibson Motorsport and today is a sort after collectable that puts out something in the vicinity of 140kW n/a vs an R31 converted RB25DET with 186kW for same money.

Why would you bother????????

I bought an RB30E from a guy in Narellan that took it out of a GTS1 because he was putting in an RB20DET. I sold the head & go fast bits for more than I paid for the complete engine and the value of his GTS1 plummeted towards the sewer.

I'm not suggesting he modifies the GTSII, I'm suggesting he buys it in lieu and keeps it stock.

I'm sure if you spoke to CAZZ she might feel the same way.

i spent about the same as a GTS on my passage GT, but that has 400rwhp and plenty of other mods... i didn't want a stock GTS.

GTS2 is an investment at the moment, particularly a good one for under 10 kay, which is very achievable. GTS 1 for around 5-7 kay is even better value.

But you don't buy one of these to mod them, waste of money, and the future value of the car plummets. If you buy a GTS you should leave it stock, as all limited edition rev heads will tell you, it doesn't matter what sort of car it is, if it was ever limited edition, it will always be worth more stock standard than modified.

As lot's will say. if it's your car you can do what you want, and that's a fair call, but don;t buy a limited build if you want to modify it and try to recoup your cash.

Would suggest a nice silo and some mods, 25 or 26 even, mmmmmm. Don't even bother with a 20.

For 10 kay you will get a bloody nice coupe though, and there is kudos in the two door, even now.

Good call CAZZ, I think I saw an HR31 on carsales for about that money and it has a silver top in it, which is a big improve over the red top RB20DET.

If you do a search on www.carsales.com.au Nissan Skyline GTS-X you will find it in ACT for 8.5K and more than half of his work is already done. It's dark grey/Gunmetal colour and has lots of mods already.

Better value than a poxed up R31 4 door in my opinion.

ive seen that grey 2 door at the car show thingy the other week, it looked very very good, If i had wanted a R31 then that would be it... clean inside and out, good brakes, great seats, engine all in great nic

would cost you a HEAP more to build it to the spec it is now, so its good value for money thats for sure

i really liked it...

Instead of building a bastard, why not have something that will hold some value.

it did actually. there is a white GTS1 on there as well. I didnt see the red GTS2.

like wise for a HR31 coupe. finding a decent one thats not half beaten up is the hard bit. as for finding a cheap one - yes I can if I wish. I work with enough compliance shopsso I can find a decent one if I tried.

I do see your point with a modded R31 vs GTS / GTS2. those are collectors cars and I have seen plenty of them go for way more than I thought.

true. I have a 88 subaru wagon that fits that point. I bought the car for $1k with a dead turbo engine (its a jap one the locals are carby only.) and proceeded to spend another $4k dropping a 2lt twin turbo with the associated brakes and electronics in it. at the end of it the car is still quicker than a STi and on the downside is that its only worth $2k and to fix it when it breaks will cost more than I paid for it initially ( the auto boxes in these are $3-4k to rebuild!).

in the case of a factory special - no way in hell I would mod it and IF I did I would make damn sure it was reversible.

considering the R31 guys all aspire to own HR31 coupes I see these as a appreciating asset as well. probably not as much as the GTS cars but still worth more than the others IMO.

or if you look on yahoo japan there is a HR31 GTS-R for 2.3Mil yen - old person owned and I dare say he knows what the car is. in the photos its dead straight and dead stock!

too much money for me. the white R31 GTS is about my market for a factory special. most cars I build are around the $6-7k mark built anyway.

yeah but for that sort of price you could get a nice r32 or pretty basic r33 which will handle a lot better and be more reliable and safe

depends. I see a lot of local 32/33s and most of them for that money have been thrashed within a inch of there life.

that said a mate of mine bought a 33 ex japan for VERY silly money (sub $3k AUD) and that car was in near new condition.

that's the one I keep coming back to for some reason. its been there for about 2 weeks now. its quite tempting to toss the guy $5k, toss the trade plate on and drive it home.

I have noted that there is a register on R31 for these. wonder why people are actually selling these cars. I have noticed a trend both here and in japan where people are selling off their toys all of a sudden. (look on JSpec and note all the rally cars.)

as you can tell by my avatar I play with all sorts of JDM cars (that's a 2003 BZ11 cube) on a daily basis. most of which I'm tossed the keys to and told to modify with aftermarket gear.

the most common question I get from other skyline owners is do you own a skyline ( I work on a LOT of them) - I'd like to be able to say yes to that :down:

This looks like a nice example, with the steering wheel even having the original horn pad still in good condition. Would be worth finding out if the owner still ahd the roiginal stereo.

Would be nice to see some more detailed pictures of the engine bay and interior, ie front seats.

At this price, it is certainly worthwhile considering, or even investing a small amount to go and have a look at it.

Refer to my first post about the problem areas for the cars, GTS's are not imune to rust under the guards, and this should be the first place you look for problems.

i paid quite a bit for my passage gt, more than a 32 or 33, but the condition inside and out is almost unbelievable for a 1989 car, and it's not your average 31 (i wanted a 4 door over a coupe)

not all 31 pplz want 2 doors ... some of them have freinds so need 4 doors .... ahahhaha :D

i definately agree its hard to find imports of that age that are good condition. But they definately do exist. I reccon decent Passage GT's pop up fairly regularly and they go a lot cheaper than the coupes.

I got mine for 5k a few years back and the interior is awesome. + its a wagon so super awesome .. lol

That's a nice looking GTS1. I don't know what it is with the GTS2, but that front end looks a little odd to me. I've always liked them though. I remember when SVD had a turbo intercooled GTS1 pace car at Bathurst....

I've been looking at importing a GT wagon. There was a neat one on Yahoo auctions that finished yesterday. It ended up seling for 190 thousand yen, meaning it would have ended up costing me 9k+ on the road for a RB20det auto... I'm looking to tow with what ever I find, so that was never going to cut it.

Brendan, does your Passage wagon have a solid or independant rear end??

i prefer the look of the 4 doors too.. the coupe's look funny with such a long rear end, whereas the 4 door seems to suit the shape nicer.

not that mine has much room to utilise the 2 rear doors.. the bucket seats take up most of the rear legroom :(

    • Yeah, the latter. No diff should have a centre replaced without checking clearances because its unlikely to be the same as whatever came out. Not that that stops most people just checking a new centre in
    • Major thread necro but how bad of a job is it to DIY? Looking at it online it looks like if you reuse your ring and pinion as long as those are in good condition it should be fine to just pull the axles/front cover and replace the diff that way? Or should I be replacing everything and doing preload measurements/gear mesh testing like the factory service manual mentions for the rear diff?
    • in my list I had the R33 GTR as the best Skyline. Infact I had all GTR's (33>34=32), the NSX, the GTO, the 300ZX, the 180SX, the S15 better than the FD RX7. I had the MR2 and the A80 as 'just' better. I also think the DC5R Integra looks better but this is an 01 onwards car. I also think the FC>FD. It's almost like aesthetics are individual! The elements @GTSBoy likes about the FD and dislikes about the 180 are inverse in my eyes. I hate the rear end of the FD and it's weird tail lights that are bulbous and remind me of early hyundai excels. They are not striking, nor iconic, nor retro cool. The GTO has supercar proportions. I maintain these look much better in person (like the NSX) especially with nice wheels and suspension which is mandatory for all cars pretty much. Some (or all) of these you have to see in person to appreciate. You can't write a car off until you see one in the flesh IMO. Like most people we probably just like/dislike cars which represent certain eras of design or design styles in general. I also think the 60's Jag E type looks HORRIBLE, literally disgusting, and the 2000GT is nothing to write home about. FWIW I don't think the Dodge Viper Gen1's have aged very well either. You can probably see where I rate bubbly coupes like the FD. I know we're straying now but the C4 and C5 absolutely murder the Viper in the looks department as time goes on, for my eyes. Wouldn't surprise me if people who love the FD, also love the MX5, Dodge Viper, Jag E Type, etc etc.
    • I used to hate R31s, and any of the other Nissans that led up to it, and any of the Toyotas with similar styling, because of the boxiness. They were, and remain, childish, simplistic, and generally awful. I appreciate R31s a lot more now, but only the JDM 2 door. The ADM 4 door (and any other 4 door, even if they are unique compared to our local one) can eat a bowl of dicks. The Aussie R31 is also forever tarnished by their association with stereotypical bong clutching Aussie R31 owners of the 90s and early 2000s. I think the Nissans of the 70s (other than 120Y/180B/200B) are far superior looking to the 80s cars. The 240K era Skylines are boss. The same is broadly true of Toyotas. Hondas don't ever register in my thinking, from any era. Mitsus are all horrid shitboxen in any era, and so also don't register. Subarus are always awful, ditto. Daihatsus and Suzukis also don't generally register. They are all invisible. I think the SW20 MR2 looks fiddly. The 3000GT/GTO is like that but way worse. Too many silly plastic barnacles and fiddly gimmicks ruined what could have been a really nice base shape. Kinda-sorta looks like a big heavy ST165 Celica coupe (and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing). I think the 180SX is dreadfully bland. It's not bad looking. But it has no excitement to it at all. It's just a liftback coupe thing with no interest in its lines, and bad graphical elements (ie wide expanses of taillight plastic on the rear garnish). The S13 Silvia is a little better - getting closer to R32 shapes. But still....bland. S14? Nope. Don't love it. S15...a little better. Probably a lot better, actually. Benefits from not being like a shrunk in the wash R34 (where the S13 was a shrunk in the wash R32 and the S14 looked like a Pulsar or something else from the stable on Nissan mid 90s horrors). The Z32 was hot as f**k when it came out but hasn't aged as well as the A80. Keep in mind that I think the R33 is the most disgusting looking thing - and out of all the previous cars mentioned is objectively closest to my precious R32. It's just....real bad, almost everywhere you look. And that is down to the majority of what was designed in the 90s being shit. All Nissans from that era look like shit. Most other brands ditto. In that context, the FD absolutely stands out as being by far the best looking car, for reasons already discussed. Going behind the aesthetics, the suspension alone makes it better than almost any other car.
