Hard man to please! I guess i am old and jaded, now the words 'project car' are almost enough to make me vomit, I would much rather go with a known quantity if i was going to make a track car, the sooner, cheaper and easier i can get it out there on the track the better!

Cheap easy and fast sounds like a good plan to me... but I'd probably be tempted by something stupid just because it looked hot

Yeah i used to be like that, and i still like the idea at times, but then i think back to doing Annas project, Which sounded really easy at first, and i start to shake and cry lol And my car hasnt been much better since Feb 2008 ive been f**king around with one of those cars in one way or the other lol

fark yeah now there is a good option!

hell yeah. cheap and easy. Can pick up parts on SD and Boost every day of the week. May not look as awesome as a 200b, but should be able to get decent enough power/speed out of it.

Martin, the alfa GTV is one of the easiest alfa's to get parts for, they are so popular everywhere in the world they aren't hard to get stuff for. I am pretty sure i linked you to the british site we get parts from not overnight from japan but within a week from england.

Plus i know how to mod these things, they aren't hard, and they are light, also running a transaxle setup with the engine in the front and the gearbox/diff in the rear they are nicely balanced

Whats wrong with using the 31 as a track car?

Bonuses: you already have it

Negatives??

My understanding is he wants something he can kill so he doesn't have to worry about killing his 31

Sort of...

It's true, every time I take her to the track, I worry about killing her. It's not a big worry, but it's there. And I have no doubt it will be worse next time I go after putting her into the wall last time...

I also want to go much more track-spec. Strip, Cage, stupid camber, etc. In my opinion, the 31 is an almost perfect daily (others would disagree), and a 'decent' option for the track. But I want moar!

The cheapest option would most certainly be to get another daily and turn the 31 into a track car, but I love driving it too much - the thought of not driving it every day makes me cry :'(.

Hence - new track car project.

ahh i see

Martin you already know 31s, so you wont need to adjust to how the car feels much, and you already know what does and doesnt work alignment wise ect, just buy a shitty one of those body wise and whack a good engine in it

Good points, and an aus spec 31 would certainly be the cheapest option, but I have ruled them out for a number of reasons

  • Ever since getting my coupe, I can't stand the look of the 4 doors. They are ugly f*ckers. Except the GTS1s, they have the looks, but they are hard to come by, and 2 of my best mates already own them.
  • They have a dodgy POS bog warner live axle rear end. Completely different feel to the back of the car. Although I have owned and driven many of them (thus the 'already used to the feel of it' point still stands) it would feel like a step backwards after the coupe.
  • There's pretty much nothing interesting about 31s for me any more. I want something different.

and he doesn't want a second 31 for some reason :)

I personally wouldn't mind a garage full of sexy 31 coupes

Another coupe would be a good option, sure. But for some reason I don't want to. I can't put my finger on why, probably something to do with the "uninteresting" point above. Anyway if a dirt cheap roller comes up (circa $500) I would find it hard to turn down, but so far the cheapest is 2 grand for an utter sh*tbox.

The import 4 doors are no good either. Although sexier than the aus builds, the chassis flexes like a mofo.

Hard man to please!

In this endeavour, yep!

Things I am looking for:

  • Rolling shell
  • Old & Cool
  • 2 door (preferable)
  • Not common
  • Jap or Euro
  • IRS (preferable) or at least potential to handle well
  • Cheap

I have also ruled out (in addition to 31s) S13s because I hate them. I know they can make a REALLY fast track car, but I don't care. I don't want one :O

I realise that old and cool instantly limits the 'handle well' option, but meh; you work with what you've got.

The 200B has IRS :D

The alfa has some fancy euro transaxle rear end and double wishbone front, it will apparently handle awesome :)

Meh, I need a project to keep me busy anyway :D. Still got the 31 to track in the meantime

I dunno man... euros always seem to be easy to get parts for... that's why all those old alfas, volvos and beemers are still running in the poor countries. endless parts supply.

hhhhmmmmm.....

How's the old saying go? Cheap, Fast, or Good; pick 2. I think in the case of Cheap, Easy, and Fast its "pick 1".

Certainly an option... I'm guessing its an A31 from the plates? I don't really like the look of them, but at least its not an S13 :). Not quite sure from the add if it comes with a cage, or just mod plated for a cage? Will keep it in mind.

What can I say? You're doing it wrong :)

In other news, it seems Telstra managed to not f*ck up and haven't disconnected my internets. Yay!

was there a possibility of this?

and yes - it's an A31 ceffy. I don't know if $2k for an S14 engine is good or not, but you could always chat with him on the price. Maybe he'll throw in a Bee*R and a set of rims?

Yes. Long story, but I was still getting billed by telstra after switching to naked adsl. Rang TPG, they said I had to ring telstra to cancel my phone (f**king rort, charging me $30 a month and not even giving me a dial tone). So I did, but telstra said someone was going to the exchange to do it today. Not sure why they have to go to the exchange since physically the line needs to stay connected for the ADSL, so I was giving it 50-50 odds that they would f**k up and I'd lose internet as well. But it seems not .

Maybe...

I should sell my f*cking Bee*R and get some cesh...

Forgot to add to the criteria - needs to be within XF + car trailer range of my house

Just get the Alfa Martin. It's a good car that fits all the criteria and has the added bonus of being something that Dan probably knows like the bottom of a bundy can. Other than that I can't think of much else.

Cortina?

E30?

    • What is the go to gearbox these days for a RWD RB? Back in the day VG TT boxes were cheap and strong. Seems they are as expensive as an RB25 box these days. What are the options without remortgaging the house?
    • Define "Nissan big brakes". You just mean standard R34 4 pots? And...it's not even the offset you need to worry about. It's really a detail of how much clearance there is between the caliper and the back of the spoke/face, which is affected more by the design of the spoke than it is by the offset. If you think about it....take any wheel, say a 19x8 that does fit and clears the caliper. Then add or subtract an inch of wheel on the outside, without changing anything else. You have changed the offset by half an inch, but not changed the clearance situation at all. Same for if you add or subtract an inch from the inside edge. The way for you to work this out is to take a wheel off the car, grab a straight edge and a ruler or two, and start to measure the distances from the wheel mounting face on the hub to the outer face of the caliper, and the outer diameter (that faces the barrel of the wheel) of the caliper. Armed with these dimensions and any other measurement that grabs your fancy while you are there, you can then go to the seller of the wheels and do the reverse measurements from the wheel's mounting face and see if there will be clearance to the caliper. There really should be. I have 17x8 RPF1s +35 clearing the caliper face by a finger tip. Those wheels do have pretty thin spokes with some curvature.... but then so do most wheels to suit Jap cars.
    • So I’ve got a r34 sedan that I managed to get green stickered, meaning I need to go through government approved wof station for my car to be allowed back on the road for some reason my car is certed for 19x8 rims.. I need these wheels  does anyone know what offset will be fine to clear Nissan big brakes? I saw 35et for sale near me, I can’t drive the car to test fit or risk being fined ..   I searched heaps online couldn’t find anywhere..
    • Okay, with all that being said about sloppy blowing from twins, I happily acknowledge the superiority of a single turbo setup on the RB; however, I still plan on double trouble.  I know the -9s were quite popular for some time because they seemed to meet that sweet spot between the -7s and 5s, would introducing VCAM and/or stroking to 2.8L provide the additional displacement/flow to push twins closer to the 500-600 goal?  Does it make more sense for a daily to just do an engine overhaul, slap some -7s on it and enjoy a bit more reliable power?  Has anyone driven a mine's overhauled and tuned engine?  I know they certainly don't approach the power numbers that you drag monsters do down under, but for daily street usage, I just want it to be fun and healthy.
