From the other thread:

You've changed man. I don't know you anymore....

might go five doors yet.

This is the best thing you've said today.

NG, what's up with that?

Martin = manrags

I suspect the starter motor is going/gone.

It goes 'click' but doesn't try to spin. Its done it once before.

Will need to check the wiring is OK, and try hitting it with a hammer. I didn't have time to mess with it this morning.

Sounds like a problem with the AFM and CAS.... I'm just sayin.

Martin, where did you get your z32 ecu all wired up for Nistune? I could do it myself but i am not all too confident in my soldering skills...

I can offer up some assistance ;-)

ECU: Scott did it for me

AFM: I did it myself

This guy.... /\

He knows....

So,

Starter trigger wire is fine, because I can hear it throwing out.

Belting with a heavy breaker bar didn't help (no room to swing a hammer).

Voltage Readings look something like this

"ON"

Battery - 12V

Starter Feed Wire @ Battery - 12V

Starter Feed Wire @ Motor - 12V

Terminal on Motor - 12V

"START"

Battery - 11.6V

Starter Feed Wire @ Battery - 11.6V

Starter Feed Wire @ Motor - 11.6V

Terminal on Motor - 0V

Problem with the connection of the wire to the motor?

I put a jumper cable from the battery to the terminal on the motor, and she started fine.

Took the jumper cable off, and it wouldn't spin again. However, a few quick turns to "START" and she kicked into life again. Now starting no problems.

On the weekend I might try disconnecting the feed wire and hit it with contact cleaner then put it back on...

Check your earth connection to the battery as well. When that starter needs to draw like 60 amps or some shit, if you have bad connections, it won't be enough to throw it. Sometimes, also, adding the extra lead enables it to get past this point and throw anyway, even though the bad connection is the slip rings or solenoid.

I'd try cleaning earths and power cable first, then if it still plays up, pull the starter apart and just clean it out. 90% of the time it works every time

Right, now I'm gonna head home...I've spent enough bloody time at work today!

yep agree, sometimes a reading on a multi-meter for voltage wont tell you the condition of the connection under heavy load...

start with the basics Martin, your on the right track...

Oh and Dan, 63.8 % of all statistics are made up on the spot... ;)

Right, now I'm gonna head home...I've spent enough bloody time at work today!

I'd blame me for picking your brain for so long this afternoon, sorry about that.

Better than picking my bum. No need to apologise, I'm very grateful to have you as a customer.....and even moreso one that doesn't pick my bum

whinge whinge whinge. I am still working. Got another few hours left too.

:P

i seem to remember telling martin to check the wiring to and from his starter motor the other weekend when it broke down on him.

I heard it throwing this morning but no starter turning, if i was more aleart i would have offered some assistance.

In other news i worked back late tonight, need cash to throw around for my NZ trip in a couple weeks, got home at 11:30 tonight though. :(

Morning Mangs,

TFIF

Check your earth connection to the battery as well. When that starter needs to draw like 60 amps or some sh*t, if you have bad connections, it won't be enough to throw it. Sometimes, also, adding the extra lead enables it to get past this point and throw anyway, even though the bad connection is the slip rings or solenoid.

Good call, I'll clean the earth wire connections while i'm at it.

I'll be in the 10% that breaks it for sure :P. I have a spare starter somewhere, might just find it and swap it in.

Yeah I can't measure the current directly with a 10A multimeter, that's why I measured the voltage with the key to 'START'. At least then you can compare the voltage with load/no load.

No need to apologise, I'm very grateful to have you as a customer.....and even moreso one that doesn't pick my bum

That's what she said.

I heard it throwing this morning but no starter turning, if i was more aleart i would have offered some assistance.

Maybe if you weren't up till 1:17am on a school night, you'd be more 'aleart' in the mornings ;)

38.2% of people wouldn't believe that

true true...

Yep, thats the way. You have narrowed down the area of the problem.

Now to clean and inspect. Then wash my car.

LOL so helpful ;) If after checking all the wiring may be worth checking the bearing in the tip of the starter motor. My one on the corolla had a tendancy to keep wearing in an oval shape; gripping the motor when it threw out.

martin, just hitch a horse to it and treat it the way a pintara is meant to roll :P

I doubt a horse would be able to pull the heavy-a*se piece of sh*t.

A pull-starter might be in order though...

    • I'm late to the party on this one but good to see common sense has prevailed and the turbo kit is coming.
    • She's looking good Greg. Colour suits it perfectly 👍
    • I had a look at the FAB9 EFR kit, around $8500 AU before delivery, so add in shipping, installation, consumables and tuning, I believe the price difference would be negligible  And whilst I am paying top dollar at MX5 Mania, if I have any issues with the kit they are local for support,  and from my experience, will happily go out of their way to help, hell, I've purchased parts from them and asked "how do I install or remove parts" and they have fitted a few of them for free, this means more to me than saving a few thousand dollars And yes, 99% of the time I just plod around in the car, that may change once I start hearing turbo whooshy noises, but, as I have 3 family members is the constabulary, even when I'm up it, it is only up to the speed limit, or occasionally, but rarely, overtaking on the Hwy (I just plod in the left lane typically and enjoy the drive) Plus the kids would never let it go if I got booked speeding, Jackie is constantly getting critiqued by the kids about her driving, which I think is hilarious, and tell them that she is "bringing shame to our family", so heaven forbid if I ever got done speeding, after all my mouthing off about her driving, I would never live it down, and it would be another thing she would bring up any chance she got Like the time I got drunk about 15 years ago and fell out of a cab, which gets brought up at least a few times every year since it happened Good times
    • True, might get it looked at. Found out you can in fact flatten the 12v battery relatively easily too the other day (kids lefts the hazards on) so meaning to get that checked in the new year. What's odd is it'll blow cold from both vents if you have the ac down as low as poss (18), but anything else the passenger one blows warmish. Also has been summer since I got it obvs but noticed it didn't seem to want to blow hot last night when we had a cold snap.
