Basically, compression ignition of premixed air fuel mixture so that combustion starts everywhere at once, creating a cleaner burn. Exhaust is remixed to help get the ratio's right in some of the implementation. Quite predisposed to exploding if you get them a bit wrong, as you end up with a 15:1 engine detonating.
