Video footage of last weeks South Australia Time attack. Our sponsored vehicle is Topstage's carbon S14. 2015 built ceramic ball bearing ATR45SAT turbocharger survived engine failures, melted exhaust manifold, and this time fire from hydraulics fluid leakage.  Still managed to take first in rear wheel drive class.

Little video to share about Jason Ferron's drifting session at Calder park few weeks ago. Video's been put together by the Drift Junkie Andrew Sparrow, do check out their Youtube channels about he's R33 GTST build.

Jasons's car is powered by one of our high flowed R33 GTST turbochargers making around 310rwkws on E85 fuel.

that's pure turbo-porn right there.

Got my car tuned finally by DVS JEZ after having some issues with "less competent" tuners in Canberra.  I know my setup is not ideal (return-flow) but was hesitant to spend money on restrictive parts if i needed to spend money first on fundamental running issues.

Setup is as follows:

R32 Nistune ECU

EFI solutions Top fuel rail kit,  stock FPR with Bosch 0 280 157 187 495cc Injectors

Bosch Z32 AFM

3" Turbo back (bellmouth, port matched) 3" 100 cel 4" body Venom cat, straight through mufflers

Hypergear G2 21U Highflow

Greddy Profec OLED EBC

Custom Hard 3" intake pipe joining to stock Airbox, Return Bov

Return flow AVO Turboworld intercooler

R32 10psi actuator pre-loaded 3mm

GTR BOV

NPC clutch

SPlitfire coilpacks

Standard Walbro 255 with the wiring mod.

Overall result is pretty good but quoted from Jez couldn't get more out of it "too prone to detonation", note the 230kw run was abandoned. so running 223Kw on 16psi

Now i know its running right i am looking to buy a new intercooler either HDI or Plazmaman and the 5" body 100cel 3" cat and then getting the tune tidied up a bit.

My initial goal was to make the most responsive setup compared to stock turbo running 98 and airbox (hate the sound of pod filter) hence g2 profile choice. Can see my old tune in second pic of stock turbo and breathing mods.

Tao what do you think of the result? Besides changing the above (intercooler and cat)  and staying on 98 and an airbox (happy to modify it), is there anything else i can do to increase response/boost response.

Kind regards

Patrick

Charge temps are too high, your cat is fine.

Yeah right. Well the plazmaman street series is a bar and played and the hdi is tube and fin.

Those are the two I'm looking at at this point as reasonable options

Don't bother with the Plazmaman Street Series, they're as good as a HDi.

Get the HDi GT2 coolers, they're pretty decent for the money you're paying, yes return flows "make" power on E85 setups, because that fuel suppresses so much knock it doesn't matter how hot your charge temps (IATs) are.

Cooler air = Denser Air = Less knock

Time to cut a hole in your body work :)

The car needs a big front mount cooler,  Go for Aero flow 600x300x100mm for a good budget cooler. Also the G2 model is a factory replacement, to get more power you will need the G3 or bigger profiles.

Hi Tao,

Thanks for the response.

when I was first bought the turbo you mentioned with the right supporting mods it could make 250kw.

Reason for going g2 was wanting as close as possible to factory response as per your results below, where I seem to be making similar power but at 16-18psi instead of 13.

Did you manage to achieve above 230 with this turbo?

Guess I want to see if it's worth my while changing cooler and get the tune tidyed up a bit and try make close to 250.

Kind regards

Patrick

The highest result out of the G2 profile lot was from Dr.Drift's personal R33 back in 2010. That pulled 253rwkws on pump 98 fuel.

Sent you a pm ?

Had a chat with Dr Drift. His had a ext gate and adj cam gears. He did have a return flow though.

Sent Tao a message about upgrading to a g3 with BB

Pattey21 hub dyno vs. roller dyno - results will vary.

Not if there calibrated properly.

If they're calibrated properly a roller will read lower due to the energy loss via the roller/wheel contact.

Also different tyres provide different readings, you run say semi slicks on a dyno make x kWs and the next day run just normal street tyres and you'll end up with a higher reading of y kWs.

Tao, the new 21u basic high flow that made 342rwkw with the free flowing turbine wheel, is that as responsive as the earlier version?

How does boost response compare to the stock turbo?  Yours isn’t ball bearing so is it slightly laggier?

I have a 2860 (similar to hks2530) on the rb25 and don’t want to lose that response..

thanks

It will definitely not be as responsive as a 2860. That is too small for a rb25det.

New G3 high flow has the same response as the older version with more mod range and top end power. It is still very responsive for daily or track.

Thanks Tao,

So a g3 high flow should get about 260rwkw on an r33 p98, as opposed to a 2860 around 220-230 do you think?

How much difference in boost response? I’m getting about 9psi by about 2300rpm in 4th I think..

    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
    • Bugger "making it look stock". I put one conventional internally fused Hella relay behind each globe. I just pulled the plugs off the back of the globes and built new loom segments with male and female plug parts to match up to the original loom and the globe, and used the original power wires to each globe coming from the switch through the original loom plug to trigger the relays. Ran a big fat (also separately fused) power wire across the front of the car to feed all the relays. It's as ugly as f**k, but it is wedged down between the headlight and battery on the RHS and the airbox and headlight on the LHS, and no-one ever looks in my engine bay, and on the odd occasion that they do I simply give no f**ks for what they think. Fully reversible - not that you'd ever want to. For f**k's sake. It's a Skyline. They made million of the bloody things. We've been crashing them into roadside furniture for 30 years now. There is a negative side effect to putting relays on the headlights. The coil current is too little to properly clean the contacts in the switches and they get blacked up and you have to open them up every couple of years and clean them manually. I have 25 years of experience on this point.
    • I was poking through the R34 wiring diagrams vs R33 and noticed that the R34 has proper headlight relays while the R33 is like the R32 and sends full headlight power through the headlight switch. I'm not afraid of wiring but I really would like to do this in a way that looks OEM (clipping into open positions on the OEM relay box) and also unlike the factory wiring which interlocks the high beam and low beam on the halogen series 1 GTR headlights I want to make it such that turning on the high beams keeps the low beams on as well. Any advice on how to locate the specific connectors + crimp terminals + relays I need? I was thinking one NO relay for low beams and another for combined high + low running off the factory high beam headlight connector. I don't really want to splice into a crusty old probably discontinued factory harness so fully reversible is my goal here.
    • Pretty sure they run the same engine as the Q50 hybrid which specifies 95 RON.  I ran 98 in mine for a while, but it made no difference in performance or economy, so I have been using 95 for the last few years.  I have never hit 6.0L/100km, but have returned mid to high 6 on the highway.  Being a hybrid, fuel economy is a lot more dependant on how you drive it.  At 110km/h, mine never goes into EV mode on the highway, so returns closer to 7.5L/100. urban driving can return low 8s if you are careful or over 10 if you are a bit more enthusiastic on the throttle.
    • About a quarter of what you want to do. It's only R7R, not R&dismantle&replaceparts&reassemble&R. ? It is stock. I already told you, you will NOT have broken those. It's f**king 4th gear for Christ's sake. You just chipped the teeth off.
