a big unnecessary beat - the original poster on SAU who could have at least tried to get the facts right - so lets put the story right............

NO GOVERNMENT IS PROPOSING THIS SCHEME - the idea comes from the Motor Traders Association (well known for sprouting idiotic ideas tarted up to sound good but really only intended to make their membership richer e.g. THEY SAY IT WILL SAVE JOBS IN THIS ECONOMIC RECESSION IF OLD CARS ARE FORCED OFF THE ROAD AND YOU HAVE TO BUY A NEW ONE - brainless as the persons driving older cars mostly do so because they cannot afford new ones

for the less sophisticated or intellectually challenged on this site, and the original poster may care to take note also - the MTA is the peak industry body representing car dealers- its not the Government - its biased towards new car dealers who pay fees to maintain the MTA - it will always try putting out some shonky idea into the public arena as this is what it is paid to do by the car dealers who are its membership

however, all dealers are not happy as many know its a bullshit beat-up that will go nowhere - and already the second hand car dealers and parts suppliers (who would lose out in such a scheme) have ridiculed the idea - the sales/prices of used cars would fall even lower so used car dealers are not buying this scheme at all

NO GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO ADOPT THIS SCHEME - none !

so you can all go back to sleep now

and the same MTA idiots will raise the same scheme again maybe in 2011 as they do this every few years or so -

you have nothing to worry about

and no-one will get any windfall money for their old bombs - so just go back to sleep

and if you want to post at least get the basic facts right - lol

I read your post and decided to close down your shit with some facts - lol

Timewasters and tools not appreciated here, esp if they may have some agenda to play that is dishonest and/or fraudulent.

My last words 'grow up' and keep your hand off it more often - lol

:D

it could work... if you were to go in and trade in your 1990 vn bomb, in any condition, on another vehicle, new or up to 10 years old, and the government had a scheme that gave the dealer $3 or 4000 on any trade in over 10 years old that was then passed on to you in the form of money off your new purchase.. i suppose it could work.. but it should be 20 years, not 10 years... i consider a 1999 model to be quite a reasonable age... a 1999 model commodore is anywhere from $6000 to $10000... $3000 off this would make it acheievable for a family to trade in their old car and get something a little bit newer.. $3000 off a $40000 makes stuff all difference... $3000 off $10000 makes alot of difference.

cheers

Linton

What a nice man, I'd like to give him an apple!

and similar to typical marketing scheme, the base price usually has been hiked up by about $3000 before they advertise for the $3000 rebate anyhow. In the end you pay the same price

The discussion was on a govt rebate, wtf does a manufaturers rebates and moving profit margins have to do with that?

How can they use it to put puff in their profit margin when they don't get to see any of the 3k.

A rebate occurs after purchase and in this fictional case would come directly from the govt.

The only reason why I worry about such a lopsided idea being enacted is because of the support it has been getting elsewhere- already deployed in France and Germany as a 'tax rebate' style operation and it has plenty of momentum behind it in the UK and US.

On the odd chance that something like it actually happened, parts and vehicles would dry up very quickly for the owners of ancient Japanese cars. It'd be nice if it stayed hot air but there is too much money behind the ones lobbying for it for me to sleep easy.
