i wanted to gain thoughts of whether ppl here have been done (other than dahtone racing) for running a big single in nsw by the epa?

what is the process if u get a defect (i.e. does the turbo need to be removed) & why would it be illegal?

i have a low mount setup on my gtr & have considered a big single but if i get done its not worth it

its an engineering issue. as long as you get the install and get an engineering certificate then they cant defect you (well they can, but they will most likely leave you alone). the EPA are another issue all together. you can get defected but not EPA'd, or vise versa. the EPA are only interested in emissions. there are a few tuners out there who can give you an EPA-friendly tune to get you out of trouble but it comes at a cost.

My mate got sent to the epa for noise pollution. He had to put 8 mufflers to silence the 6 litre V8 XF falcon, they are real bastards apparently.

i've got a big single on my gtr, been pulled over once and had it checked as long as it has eng. cert. and rta notified of the modification they'll leave you alone.(rego papers state the engineers cert. number and sticker states a condition number on it)

How much are we talking about if got done by emission?

Its not really the cost in fines or the testing, its changing everything back to original and de-tuning the car.

Altho in saying that you dont have to change it to standard, most mods are allowed as long as it passes emissions, and if your car

has been extensivley modified e.g cams, top mount, plenum, injectors, etc,it will be close to impossible and will be up for big bucks,as im goin through this right now, just considering throwing a standard motor in just to pass this B.S

Marko, its really nothing to do with running a 'big single' specifically.

Any modified car, especially a Skyline is a target if you choose to drive through or hang out in high risk areas, or go driving with people that attract attention.

Keep a low profile, be sensible on the road, avoid chromies and stickers, and of course where possible try and keep your car engineered and you should be fine.

Example, if you are running no cat, or a decat/cat thats been hollowed out, that is a big fine waiting to happen.

Last time I checked it was a $5,000 or $10,000 fine - I forget which.

Ouch! I wonder how they would catch you with a hollowed out one?

can i ask what attracted them to pull u over in the gong and are u running a big single high mount?

yea running high mount,

lol its actually quite funny,my mate and myself,2 skylines just heading home out of wollongong,

he has given it a little bit of a hit while there was an undercover cop sittin behind us,so they pulled him over,

and me being just utterly stupid have gone around the block and stopped down the road from where they were

checking his car out,and sure as hell they have come down to me and issued me with with an epa inspection aswell

lol.

like others have said..

You need and engineers stating the modifications/parts used for the highmount and then you need to pass the IM240 test (emissions test) to prove that the modifications havn't altered the cars emissions.

pm me if you need any more details.

PS. All legit and trusted engineers will not even look at your car/cars mods until you show them that you have passed the IM240 test. So better to find a RTA listed and trusted engineer first and go from there. You might also want to call up the RTA and check that the engineer you are using is still an approved/trusted one as some of the ones listed on their list aren't or are under investigation.

how about running a larger capacity bottom end (i.e. rb30 in gtr), what are the rules here in regards to legislation?

will i need an engineers certificate for this?

ideally - i'd like to use my rb26 engine number on the rb30 block but then i cannot sell my rb26 block to somebody who wants to register this engine number

they put a bit of paper at the exit of your exaust and if it turns a certain colour then you have no cat cause the cat filters out certain chemicals

and you can get an engineer's cert without an emmisions test by any engineer because they are two different things, an engineers cert is just saying the car is safe, eg engine conversion is safe, brakes are big enough for the new engine, the front mount is mounted properly, pod in an enclosed box, no atmo bov

even with an engineers cert you can still get an epa notice, the epa is only about the emissions not weather the car is safe or not, you can have a safe car that doesnt comply with emmissions

Bastards think of everything! They probably have a bag in the boot labeled 'defect hoon kit' containing all the gizmos needed to get your car taken away.

Another way they check for missing cat is by temperature of the front and rear of the cat with a laser temp gun. If its the same temp at both ends, theres no cat. The epa will know anyway without doing the temp test once they hook up the exhaust gas analyzer and see how much HC's, NoX, CO etc it is putting out the back of it.

Guilt-Toy had his car fully engineered with a high mount then got it emissions tested...he was pulled over many times and when he produced the paperwork the cops were very pleased he was a motorist who had done the correct thing in regard to the state laws and sent him on his way. My car was fully engineered with the low mounts and registered as a two seater to comply as it has a weld-in cage...ive not got it re-engineered since i had the T51 fitted but i don't cruise to the silly places asking for trouble.
