mate bought a new stagea (m35 ARX)

imported it himself..

it drives fine...

but it's got a few issues..

firstly...

idle drops rapidly and stalls after it's given a hit. some times it stalls once it comes to a half even in normal driving..

fuel pressure was low when we checked it

so far we have replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump and that has brought the fuel pressure up

but the problem is still there and but it has become driveable...

still idles very low...

does any1 have any ideas or have faced similar problems?

Mine has done similar things.

Used to stall when breaking hard and revs would dip and then stall. I have reset the Throttle Position Switch (TPS) which seemed to temporarily fix the problem but idle was a bit too high at 850rpm.

Recently the problem has got worse with the car stalling whilst driving. Some times when coasting other times when accelerating. It is also hard to start now. Also have check engine light on dash. (this may be a similar fuel pressure thing)

I have the car booked into Nissan for a service on Friday so it will be interesting to see what fault codes are showing and what they mean.

The car has 78K on it and has not had the plugs replaced so I am thinking this may be contributing.

Other things that I suspect may be problems are power steering fluid (as I saw this was a problem for another M35) or possible the O2 sensor.

Any way I will post up what it turns out to be.

Have a look at the "Stagea Stalling" thread as the way of getting the codes and resetting the TPS are in that thread.

Cheers

Andy

so his one has a fuel filter?? where is it? i cant find one!

i rekon do the plugs also while youre tinkling, you need to take off the throttle body to do the plugs, so give it a good clean. its possible one of the vacuum lines that go around the TB is blocked. hit it with some cleaner and see how that goes.

I had similar issues. I took mine to Nissan and they flushed the power steering fluid due to it being a bit gluggy, which improved the steering a lot and I'm thinking this may have been putting intermittent strain on the drive belt - causing the revs to dip and sometimes stall. It hasn't stalled since I got the car back (just over a week now).

However it does still rev low (500rpm) when idling and occasionally the idle has a tiny shudder.

I've tried resetting the TPS switch, and I've done the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure (which it sometimes just stalls during) but nothing's really changed. The ECU is throwing no faults, and the transmission fault code said something about CAM or something - its to do with a communication link and didn't appear to be an actual fault. (code 17 or something)

Other things I may try in future is spark plugs and fuel filter (does it have one or not?).

Mine's done 92000km and so it will be due for new plugs soon. Will be due for the 100,000km service later this year so hopefully it holds up till then.

The M35 has a timing chain, not a belt, so servicing costs for the big 100K will be much less - woohoo! :D

Actually now that I think of it - Nissan were going to check the plugs on mine but because the throttle body needs to come off, they needed a new gasket which they didn't have in stock so weren't able to do it.

There were quite a lot of things they weren't able to do due to parts, but they were very helpful in at least looking it up and having a go. They were still able to service it and rot&bal the tyres which is what I originally put it in for...so it wasn't all bad.

They weren't put off by the extra hassle either, and offered that if I need any parts just to let them know and they'd order them in. I'll definitely be going back :D

I cannot find the fuel filter either.

If OP can tell us where it is, that would be a great help as it was my understanding that there was no fuel filter on the M35.

Perhaps he means the Fuel Pressure Regulator??

Coming up to 150,000kms. Changed the plugs at 110k. Put in a good set of Platinum or Iridium plugs. Makes a BIG difference.

If you want Iridium, try the Denso plugs (will have to contact Denso themselves and import them).

We put them in my mates stag (I just has the Nissan/NGK platinums put in) and it idles much smoother.

Have my Denso Iridiums earmarked to be put in at 200,000kms.

I had my car diagnosed by Nissan today for why the motor just stops when running. Also difficult to start.

Error code was 304, It is the Crank Angle Sensor on the right bank.

Will have it fitted on Monday, cost $340 fitted.

Lets hope this solves all my problems.

Cheers

Andy

will not solve all your problems!.....but you car might be fixed :(

Shit, If I could solve my problems that cheaply and quickly I would be there in a flash. :)

Lucky for you they still can't work out your problems so nothing to be done at the moment. :P

Ahhhaaa. I have it.

It is inside the fuel pump in the fuel tank. It is a Fuel level sensor/fuel filter and fuel pump all in one.

Pull out your back seat and you will see the tank under the seat. From what I can see on the pics, there will be a large round section on either side of the car. One side, I think the drivers side will have the unit. It will have a single lead coming out of a rubber cover that looks to go towards the front of the car.

If you have the G35 service manual have a look in the file FL, page 5.

I will have a look for the part number tonight.

Cheers

Andy

thats not bad for a CAS price new from nissan! im surprised, but then again the VQ is a current series motor and im guessing they all use the same part.....

as for the fuel filter, is this a servicable item? ie does it need changing or is it a 'sock' or strainer type of thing??? or is it an actual filter with an element in it?

It is a little bit difficult to tell from the images in the service manual. I will look for the part number tonight and that, with the price may give you a clue.

Me, I have no idea.

Agreed.

I have attached the FL.pdf from the 2003 G35 Sedan for those who do not have it.

As Andy said, flip to page 5.

fl.pdf

It is a Fuel Strainer (NISSAN part number 16400-4M405) but if first owner in AUS their should be no need to replace it as they are a requirement of compliance.

When ever I fit the strainer I always replace the O-Ring as a slight cut or crease can cause fuel leaks so for the few dollars to Nissan it is worth it.

    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve.
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
