Hello there,

Finally booked my license in and am now looking for bikes to purchase! Most first bike buyers ask, should i get a cbr250rr or a zx2r? But I am asking more should I get a zx2r, cbr250rr or something more commuter like zzr or gpx or gs. The reason i ask is because of the pros and cons.

sports bike

Pros

Looks "cool"

performance (i wouldnt know because i havent tried)

Cons

Higher cost then commuter

generally higher k's for $buck$

older model for price

cost more

Commuter

Pros

Almost looks as cool as the sports bike

lower K's

newer model

cheaper

Cons

Not as hardcore looking as the sports bike

performance (once again, i wouldnt know)

Is saying all this, as from what ive read. i would get over this bike in a year etc and sell it... the commuter would proberly in better condition for selling. I must mention i have no idea, im just going off what i think and what ive read around. When i first got my line i used to give it a bit of gas for the rush but now i never do... im happy to just granny around... im guessing that will also be the same for the bike... i will get it some gas then get over it and granny it around. which in the end the commuter would be better.

I should mention what i would use it for. I would take it to work when its good conditions and i dont have to take anything (only 15min drive). i guess at least twice a week. and for weekends if not raining would be my primary transport.

Hopefully i explained myself well, and look forward to your opinions!

hehe u never get over the thrill of bike riding! My first bike has been the vtr250 very good bike. The car will also be hard to go back to ....it just feels so slow. Check out the forum netrider for some comments / threads on bikes.

My first bike was a Cagiva Mito, a sports bike. Bucket loads of fun through winding roads but not so ideal for commuting because of the agressive riding position (knees up next to your chest and hugging the fuel tank) Decide what you want to use your bike for and buy accordingly

yeh it depends what you want it for.. for a good all round bike... you cant go past the vtr 250's.. if you want something a bit bigger.. a hyosung 650 is pretty good looking bike... and good for large riders..

for the ultimate thrill though... get an aprilia RS125... same story as cagiva mito.. sooo much fun. and quick little buggers. but hard to ride in traffic due to riding position.. light weight.. thirsty.. noisy.. smokey.. and nothing below 6000rpm... but it makes up for it in sheer thrills.

if you are doing lots of traffic on it... get a big dirt bike... like a 400+ WR, and motard it... the massive torque will punch you through gaps in traffic before the gap even opens up... and the riding position is more upright and you can see for miles.. with smaller road wheels and good tyres.. it will out handle many sports bikes and will be alot of fun.

well i'm not a 'rider' but i have riden, and looking at it as a future prospect. my mates got a 2008 zx2r (the 250 ninja, i think its zx2r) and, it really wasnt that impressive. so i wouldnt go buying a sports bike for its 'performance'. that said i dont have a lid so wasnt going too hard, and imma big fat c*nt too.... still nothing special

i was personally looking at the 650 hyosungs. should have a much more firendly torque curve, are legal on your L's, there is a verys imple mod to the carby to crank it up (its been choked back to be L plate legal) and with an aftermarket exhaust, that vtwin rumble is cream worthy

personally myself i would recommend the new 250 ninja.

cheap to buy, run, insure, while still looking sporty and fun to ride.

i nearly bought one before the 33. still contemplating getting one as a daily.

Also whats everyones opinions of how many K's become too high...? and you dont have to say there is no too high K's if you look after it. Im just guessing i want to look below 30,000 k's?

    • Thanks mate 👍 The car was brought into the UK by a USAF mechanic until he was stationed back to the US, one owner later I bought her back in 2009. Luckily the only corrosion was on the sill seams, so once taken back to metal and treated and sealed all ok, I then undersealed the car myself and check yearly and treat any corrosion which to be honest is zero. She's garaged most of the time and hardly ever driven in the rain, but as you say most are rotten unfortunately, I was lucky in finding her as she was and still is in excellent condition.
    • Stunning car.  Looks amazing!  You're in the UK?  How the hell do you stop your car rotting away beneath you?  British cars are the WORST I've ever seen in regards to rust.  Some of the cars SR Autobody have done are borderbeyond saving.
    • not a date code? or a foundry code?
    • I have up to date pics of the engine build and turbo conversion over on my instagram @skpro_jects if you want to take a deeper look.   Basically the exhaust manifold is straight bolt on and the ports match (they arent any smaller than a 25 or 26 head).    the intake ports are different shape so the 20/25det manifold will bolt up but wont match properly or seal. You will need to port match using the 25det gasket as a stencil. Personally i ran the entire stock 20neo intake setup and have configured the swirl valves and torque valve to work based on my custom parameters to help with off boost response and spool. But this is using a standalone aem v2 ecu. The stock 20det ecu wont be able to control them.
    • Hi. a little later but if the topic is here. So...the exhaust is the same and you can use 25/Turbo or any aftermarket? What about intake side? Is it too "plug n play" or? (i do not remember for 100% but i think that one intake to head gasket was little bit different than on the RB25 - i bought gasket kit way back) I know that even if it "plug" those butterfly swirls would cause ECU to be confused or?   Just asking for the info 🙂 and of course the RB25 things are easier to come by
