I saw talk of an Overlay for the standard screen. Is this still an option? is it USB? if so, does it have a driver for windows to act like a mouse?

I have searched for USB overlays, they are really cheap ($55) but they are not quite the right size. Still looking.

Obviously I am planning on a Carputer. For Navigation, I previously use TomTom on my windows phone. I also have found freeware that basically lets me control and view the phone's screen on a computer, via the USB into my phone; sorta like remote desktop / VNC. Also, by plugging in my phone over USB, I can also use my phone as a wireless internet interface, so my Carputer will have internet also (ie google maps with traffic)

I have also found that JayCar sell the 12v power box for a std pc. So I plan to try an old 1Ghz P4 I have lying around.

My problems I have at this time are:

1. How I will handle the shutdown / power-down of the PC. Also the strange power conditions during engine startup.

2. A single USB2 cable is 5m max, USB1 is 3m (my old PC is USB1) It will need to reach the screen for the Overlay, and I also want another one to pop out just behind the screen to plug in my phone.

3. Will start with the Std old HDD in the PC, but look for an SDD, do not expect the HDD to last too long, especially with my low profile tyres.

4. The Overlay, its install, the usb cable length. Will use a trackball system if I can't sort this out at first.

5. The VGA to NTSC conversion. Resolution? running XP at 640x480 with the current screen as output.

6. Hope to use the ODBII cable into the PC later, but a little concerned as to cable length as PC will be in Boot. Also sceptical regarding the display on the tiny low-res OEM screen.

Thats where I am at now. Also sent an email to Chris (cant do PM's yet) regarding the AUX cable / adapter into the TV in the boot; which is where I plan to put the PC.

Any comments or further problems I may encounter please feel free to put up.

Iive installed a carpc on mine too. G33K is right, the only properly working obdii scan tool is BlaZt. All gauges work only with NDS (Nissan Data Scan) 1.3. It comes a as a bundle when you buy the adapter.

I'm beta testing the 1.4 now and man, it's got soo much potential. Can even unlock control your interior lighting even turn off the beeps. All from the software. The only downside for me, is that it can't read codes off my tcu/tcm since i got a gt8.

I'm in Perth and willing to help anyone to install a car pc on their Vs if they're keen ;)

Thanks.

My one is working flawlessly, however, i've upgraded to the TPMS that i posted a while back so i don't use it for scans as much anymore.

Other than that - the CarPC is a charm! <3

    • I believe there was a similar one posted by @duggyphresh. They were re-routing their battery positive cable in the way I am also trying to achieve. Sorry, I’m new to this forum, so was a bit late to the party by a few months and so reignited the old thread, as I wanted to know how they got on with doing it.
    • Wasn't there a thread on this very subject just a few weeks ago?
    • Hi all! Looking to relocate the battery to the trunk of an R34 GTT. I want to do it using as many stock GTR components as I can (including the harness protectors from the 34 GTR that run underneath along the chassis to the engine bay). So far I’ve purchased the battery tray from a 33 GTR, as the captive weld nuts are already there just asking to be used. There is also the slight issue of now having to relocate the ABS/TC/Fuel Pump Control ECU, which in GTT’s sits right above where the battery will then sit on the tray. Has anyone already achieved this, and if you have any pics that you wouldn’t mind sharing? It would be great to see how others have done it and where you put them, as there are countless holes in the parcel shelf panel to potentially use. Just trying to get some ideas bounced around, and to help uncover any potential problems I may encounter by  my choice of location. TIA for any help!
    • Brand was ard.   I also threw a brand new battery at it and beefed up the wire from the alternator to battery and added an extra earthing point from the battery
